Great video explanation on how and what an oxygen sensor actually does! I understood the purpose of the sensors but the science of how and what they actually do was a bit of a mystery to me, this video was both interesting and very informative. Nice job! Thank you for posting.

These are excellent videos. I have been drinking them up for the last hour, the entire batch except two of them thus far. Wow, I am just pondering how much work went into each one and where the cool graphics came from to begin with.

Very interesting. I wondered how those things worked. The layers were a little confusing as to where they were. The Platinum wasn't labeled until after it was talked about and it showed two different colors for the platinum once the meter was shown.

chemistry, physics, and gear heads. my favorite combination. excellent video. now i know why my o2 sensors are throwing a code.
I wish I had seen this video a year ago. Would of saved me thousands of dollars. Been to 2 garages and told they could not figure it out! I am no mechanic by any stretch of your wildest imagine, but have figured out my problem. Exhaust leak from exhaust manifold connection to exhaust pipe before o2 sensor on drivers side. 93 ford ranger xlt 4x44.0L

At 2:45 when it said " The difference in concentration of oxygen molecules in the exhaust gas and the ambient air drives the oxygen ions from higher to lower concentration." Is outside air the higher concentration? Thanks! This video is very well done by the way. It really helped my understanding.
@ryan_from_tmg6 ай бұрын
I know this is 7 years later, but yes the higher concentration of oxygen molecules would be in the ambient air, since the oxygen inside the exhaust was mostly used up during combustion.

A very informative video; thank you. You might go the next step and show how to test the sensor with pros and cons of different methods eg DIY and professional methods.
@davidhall37472 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to test an Oxygen Sensor is to send either Positive or Negative voltage through the Signal Wire Utilizing the Cars Battery. Just use your body as a Resistor when testing using Positive Voltage. Real Fixes Real fast, shows how to test the Oxygen Sensor utilizing this Methodology.

Excellent video. Very clear and detailed. Just one question: What exactly does rich or lean mean? Rich=high voltage=low ratio of outside O2 to exhaust O2=not full combustion of gas in cylinders? Is this correct?
@enoxosr110 жыл бұрын
Rich means that the fuel to air mixture has more fuel than the specified operating value and lean means the air is more than the specified value.

One thing It didn't say but its pretty much common sense is when the PCM receives a lean signal around .1 volt it grounds the injectors to stay on longer. When it receives a rich signal around .9 volts it shortens the time the injectors come on.

Description/explanation for the sensor before the catalytic converter is not correct; nowadays in this position a measuring sensor is used.
@davidgruen74235 жыл бұрын
I still don’t understand it, how does it know the difference between rich and Stoich? I mean since both stoich and rich use up all the oxygen in the exhaust, then essentially there is no difference in the makeup of the exhaust for these two conditions, unless stoich is defined as still having some percentage of oxygen in the exhaust.

Nice video but could you explain why the signal from the O2 sensor oscillates between 100mV and 900mV?
@rubencruces84445 жыл бұрын
I have the same doubt, did you find the answer? There are many engine revolutions for the ECU to control the change with injection pulses.
@henkmoesker131310 жыл бұрын
If your airflow in the exhaust would go up, there would be a relatively large amount of oxygen passing through the sensor. The outside conditions would not change. The increasing airflow would have nothing to do with the lean/rich condition in considering the air (oxygen) / fuel ratio?
@mraltex9 жыл бұрын
I understand what your point is, but what you are missing out on is that both the oxygen molecules and the rest of the exhaust gasses is moving at a given rate... This means that the oxygen molecules will just be within the sensors housing for a short time, then they will pass through to let the next molecules to take place within the sensor "housing". There is nothing with the sensor that makes only the oxygen molecules "stick" to the sensor. There are just as many oxygen molecules within a given space, for example inside the sensor range, aswell as in the rest of the exhaust, depending on oxygen percentage in the whole of the exhaust gasses.

Then the temperature will tell if it is rich or lean because the heat can trigger the voltage then pass to the ecm/ecu

EXCELLENT VIDEO EXPALINED VERY CLEARLY AND VERY INFORMATIVE - The mixture on your car could be made to run very lean if a resistor was placed inline with one of the leads coming from it, this would reduce the voltage and the ecu would run the car lean :) great for high emission engines that fail at the dreaded mot
@PepeRoldan19617 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the ECU detect a lean condition and make the mixture rich?
@jrdn.lauren7 жыл бұрын
not when its on idle (like when testing). And if it is running rich, the resistor would only drop it slightly to make it look like its juuust right. ecu tells the testing equipment everything it peachy and you get the green light.

Didnt those bullshit plug in power chips from back in the day do the opposite? By fooling the ecu that it was lean n making the car run richer..... for £125?
@marknorth12216 жыл бұрын
theravedaddy i think you need to increase the voltage to fool the system into thinking its ritch so the injectors run a bit leaner, that should give better economy, but be carefull not to go too lean or its bye bye pistons and plugs, there are some aftermarket products that should do the trick. If its a single wire o2 sensor then you could probably DIY with a voltage reg, a trimpot and AA battery
