I cannot watch it! My God! They don't care. They have seen their elders do it , so they have learnt the "art" , however the people need to be taught empathy as well! I can't go there . But, it needs to begin! They need education on empathy and other such things which will make them grow as human beings and also alleviate some of the suffering that animals have to go through.

being a changpa nomad, i want to say that no can be more empathetic to animals then them, you have no idea about what they go through raising them. you try raising at most 50 and then think about how they are raising all those 500 to 600 goats and sheep

The goats don't seem too happy with this arrangement. I've seen a few videos of how Chinese farmers harvest angora wool from Angora rabbits. It's brutal. They are spreadeagled with their four limbs tied to four corners. Then they are plucked raw.

Fascinating and gorgeous imagery, as always. I wonder about the economic/ecologic balance: the herders get government support to have these flocks of pashmina goats. But the land is scarcely vegetated (I'm judging this only on the basis of your imagery of course) and they get subsidized with tents and other benefits by the government, who buys the pashmina. Would the land support this many goats without the additional food provided by the government? In other words, while this is a unique culture, is it actually sustainable?
@indiainmotion
@indiainmotion 8 ай бұрын
Sorry it was not very clear in the video.. the government does not provide grass to sustain the animals all year around. They provide it as an additional source of nutrition for the weaker animals and for use during emergencies, like when there is a lot of snowfall or drought. The Changpas depend on the land for the sustenance of their animals.

While this can be discomforting for the goats, it's completely necessary. These goats are domesticated and don't easily shed their undercoat in lower elevations. They can overheat if not brushed. The answer to their discomfort would be to give the shepherd's more effective combs.
