Lol the Silmarillion is more like 30 Movies and 10 Seasons of 2 Series. Its 4000 Years of Storytelling about the whole Lore. There are still Tonns of Documents that where not read not even by his son. His son himself telled in an Interview that he s Father did nor Complete his Work, he left him Tousand s of Documents scripts and Storys about the whole lore its overwhelming. The Published Book Silmarillion thou was just and assemble of storys Tolkien s son was able to Put Togheter, it s more like a Bible... but if you wanted to cover the whole first, second and Third Age then Good Luck. For example The Trilogy Lord of the Rings needed 3 Movies to show 20 Years of Middle Earth, how about 6000 Years.? Just my 2 Cents

That should be feasible once the rights are given. I can totally forgive lackluster which was The Hobbit trilogy given how little time was given to PJ and how the script was just one movie extended into three while shooting. So, with good pre-production and preparation of script it can really work out.

Children of Hurin is one of my least favorite stories of the Silmarillion to be honest. I think the story of Beren and Luthien would be pretty awesome. Anything dealing with Feanor and his sons and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad would be pretty cool. There is so much in The Silmarillion that is epic and The Children of Hurin is depressing.
@Crandaddy81
@Crandaddy81 7 жыл бұрын
anonwoohoo I agree. The Children of Hurin is probably the saddest and most depressing story in the whole book. I'd rather not leave the theater feeling like killing myself (all three of the main protagonists are driven to suicide, incidentally). The story of Beren and Luthien, and of their Quest for the Silmaril, on the other hand, might be my favorite story in the whole book, and I think it has great cinematic potential. I'd really love to see a good portrayal of Huan, the great wolfhound of Valinor, in action! That could be sooo epic...

As it stands now they cannot adapt any of Tolkien's other works, but that can change in the future...and I doubt Warner bros. are going to let their multi-billion dollar franchise go quietly. Theonering.net have outlined how more films can currently be made with the existing rights in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4XGooCiZc2qaLs (The writing/screenplay for these potential adaptations would have to be handled very carefully as there isn't a lot of material to work with).

I’ve heard that Christopher Tolkien wouldn’t sell the rights to make a film adaption of the Silmarillion, so that’s why it hasn’t been possible to even attempt doing so. But now that he has passed away, maybe his family members would be open to it ? And, Pete, Fran and Philippas abilities to create a functioning (great) movie(s) out of a special and some what ‘complicated’ book, will make sure that they could def. make The Silmarillion work and into a new masterpiece(s).. There’s no doubt in my mind! Let’s hope the “easter eggs” left in P.Js videos means that they’re actually working on making this happen !!

I think the Silmarillion would work best as a TV series. I'm picturing like, hour long episodes that span the whole book, with two-or-three-parters to cover the longer chapters like Turin and Beren and Luthien. Granted, it'll probably be the most heart-breaking series on the planet, but it's what the world needs... And didn't even know it wanted.
@Uberdude6666

So Peter said about a LOTR-film once, that it could not be done. It would be impossible to accuratly portray it on film. Well he did it, but the Silmarillion is like, that problem, x 10. Even though it is a shorter book, it has nothing to do with the length of the book itself. And those people who think that all the problems of putting Silmarillion on screen will disapear by making it a TV show instead, it- it just won't. The problem is that it would basically only be a montage of sequences like the prolouge to Fellowship of the Ring. Sure, that might sound cool and all, but it wouldn't really work as a film/TV-show

Film focused on Saurons rise to power would be a pretty interesting one since they could make it span 3000 years or more, which might work since you have the immortal elves to focus on. It would give you a real sense of the span of an elfs life. They could focus on the mortal men from time to time just to see them come and go as a contrast to the elves which would be the main focus.

Four films and they can do it! 1) (After a little backstory) Feanor returns from sailing the world for 100 years, the treachery of Melkor, the Oath of the Noldor, the travel to Middle Earth and the death of Feanor... End in tragedy. 2) The remaining Nolder arrive battered and torn from their journey; the introduction of Thingol (and Luthien in the background); the capture of Maedhros; the forming of elven kingdoms, the introduction of heroic men and dwarves, then the surprise attack from Anband and finish with the epic duel between Fingolfin and Morgoth. 3) Beren and Luthien in full, defeating Sauron, the capture of the Silmaril, the death by Wolf and reincarnation, off to live in peace, but what of the Oath? 4) The voyage of Earendil and the War of Wrath in full; starting with the sons of Feanor destroying Doriath; the death of Elwing-Swan, the plea to the Valar, and an hour of War of wrath, and then finish with the dark fates of the last two of Feanor's sons and the Silmarils. It can work... It's right there.... 3 hours a piece...! Now anyone know the Christopher Tolkien so we can convince him to allow it???

In 2033 the Silmarillion becomes public domain so if the Tolkien family wants to make more money off the books then they should sell the rights prior to that.
@onthetrail506
@onthetrail506 7 жыл бұрын
The Silmarillion was published in 1977 which would give it a Public Domain year of 2048 if J.R.R. Tolkien had been the only writer within the work, he is not, Christopher Tolkien is credited and has a writing credit too. So it is life plus 70 years of him for the copyright to end in the UK and that is if they do not pass the copyright on, which they will. As for the Public Domain scenario, that is for publishing royalties within a single geographical area and it would not be legal to publish or show a movie worldwide. They could make a movie if it falls into the PD in Canada and show it in Canada but would need to wait another 20 years for the work to fall into the PD in the UK.

From what I read, Tolkien's family had to give permission to make LOTR which they did. They weren't really pleased with Jackson's work (they felt it was too childish), but reluctantly signed off on The Hobbit. I can only imagine they were furious with The Hobbit and will not allow another movie to be made.
@imlorien4468
@imlorien4468 7 жыл бұрын
Warner Bros. do not need their permission to make more middle-earth movies with the book rights that they currently have. They could make another LOTR in a couple of years if they wanted to. But they only own the shared rights (which were sold to them by the Tolkien family) to the Hobbit and LOTR books so any movies based on other works such as The Silmarillion could not be made without cooperation from the Tolkien estate as the studio doesn't own the film rights for it.

The rights were actually sold in the 60's, way before Jackson's adaptation. Ever since there is made an animated movie, a music video and Jacksons movies about LotR and the Hobbit. I would love to see more movies, but even if Jackson would get the rights it would take decades to film every story. Another issue would be that each story takes places hundreds upon thousands of years in between. It would take careful planning to prevent very little screen time for mortal characters.

Michael Ellis you do know what tolkien did in writing the hobbit....?? it wasn't for adults let's say. and he always thought all the love and focus on his fantasy work was silly as his other works were far more important he imagined other would take more interest and not squabble over kids stories. oh I spoiled it for you. yes the hobbit was written for... your answer good sir. and the lotr followed because it was such a hit and to continue the lore but more adult focuesed. so really your entire comment or their comment seems folly because it was all meant to magical childish and few directors could match Jackson greatness with the lotr series. so I'm not sure where your getting your quotes sofisciated man but it does seem right here. they were not childish but weren't bloody gory xrated junk which tolkien would have hated. but the movies were more sensitive than the books probable meant to be for general audience and main stream audience grasping because fewer people read and think today. I'm sure their is still beef tolkien wanted Christopher Lee to be gandalf and Jackson chose the xmen professor guy. the hobbit was great even though their were things that went far off from it to add to the lore. at least they made it respectable to that of lotr trilogy and I liked the trilogy idea but very much distaste fir ruining the last battle of the 5 armies and making beorn a small side character. oh well. it's over.

Agreed. I really don't know where they'd choose to begin, unless they decided to just make a set of anthology films. The story of Feanor doesn't really fit a movie well, and Beren and Luthien wouldn't make sense on their own. Really any series would feel underwhelming if it didn't end with the downfall of Morgoth, but the War of Wrath would probably be too over the top for fans of the Jackson films

If you make The Silmarillion Trilogy, first film is the rise of Morgoth, second film is the corruption of Sauron, third film is the defeat of Sauron. Obviously, certain aspects of the book will be compressed, and new elements will be added in to make it a coherent story. Often, hundreds if not thousands of years will be skipped over, but that's okay so long as the movies are made.

I hope Pete Jackson keeps making all stories from Middle-Earth, Hobbit wasnt his fault. Taking over a project thats about to start is almost doomed, it's just like "Fincher's" Alien 3. His best work is still the first one, The Fellowship. No overUse of CGI and most effects are done practical. The last battle when Boromir dies is better then any of the "BIG WAR" scenes from Towers and King.

A lot of you are armatures or have no clue at all what really went on with "The hobbit" This started all the way back after "Return of the King" and PJ had to sue New Line for money owed. New Line said very publicly "We will never hire PJ again" Even though they were breaking a contract of owed money to PJ which they did pay in the end. Years letter Del Toro leaves the hobbit and New line goes into full out panic mode and begs, BEGS PJ to take over since hes the only Director with even close to enough exp to take on this project. PJ had YEARS of pre productions for LOTR, he took the Hobbit, (A different directors work) and had only "MONTHS" to pre prep this film. PJ is the only reason we have a Hobbit film because that project would have been axed otherwise and its NEW LINE's fault for with holding payments to PJ back during Return of the King.

Well, Christopher Tolkien has made it quite clear that _The Silmarillion_ will never be filmed as long as he holds the rights to it, but at close to 92 years young that can't be too much longer. As far as making a decent cinematic adaptation of _The Silmarillion_ goes, I won't go so far as to say it's absolutely impossible, but as I'm sure anyone who's read it would agree, it would at the very least be an *_EXTRAORDINARILY_* difficult feat to pull off -- *_FAR_* more difficult than either _Lord of the Rings_ or _The Hobbit_. One thing I'm most certain of is that the whole story couldn't be told in a mere three films. It would have to be done over numerous installments, and each one would most likely command the budget of a major Hollywood blockbuster. Isolating certain stories from within _The Silmarillion_ for film adaptation would be much easier to do, and I see some commenters here saying they'd like to see _The Children of Hurin_.... No, please not that one -- not by itself anyway. Have these people even read that story? It's about as sad and depressing as they come. If we only get one story adapted to film, give us the story of Beren and Luthien, and their Quest for the Silmaril!

Here are some ideas for you Peter, to make it a better movie. Please use them - I don't want any money for them - they're free for you to use! First, I'd like to see a new character in the Silmarillion movie called Boo Baggins, who is the handsome young ancestor of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. He goes on an adventure fighting a young dark lord Sauron, who has cool CGI ninja fighting skills for fighting with elves. Bobo also teams up with a young teenage version of Smaug the dragon, who is cool and funny and helps Bobo, before he finally turns evil at the end. There should also be a female giant spider with big blue eyes, who falls in love with Boo and fights beside him in the big battle, and ultimately has to sacrifice herself to save her love. The last big battle is two and a half hours of non-stop action!!

Of course they used the Silmarillion as a reference when making both the LOTR and Hobbit movies, since it's full of the backstory and lore of that world, which is its whole purpose.

They said LOTR was "unfilmable". He proved them wrong. That allowed them to also bring The Hobbit to the screen. But i think we can all agree that the Silmarillion is unfilmable in a feature length format, without having a 9-part saga like Star Wars. It's probly best to either present is as a series, since the world is absolutely in love with Game of Thrones, or leave it as script and the imagination of the reader. There is way too much content in the Silmarillion, BUT the story is already divided into books that can be used as an outline for seasons of a TV series; Ainulindale, Valaquenta, Quenta Silmarillion, Akallabeth, and The Third Age. Not to mention the stories that were dearest to Tolkien's heart; Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, and the Fall of Gondolin. Those three alone would probably need their own separate film trilogies to tell the stories in full. Fingers crossed for an on-screen return to Middle-Earth as a TV series.

Of course, there is also the complexity that would be involved. For anyone who has not read the Silmarillion yet, it covers the span of several thousand years if you include all of the time before the rise of the sun and the moon, and even if you only deal with then on it still covers over 500 years of events in Beleriand. Also, there is the fact that the time line of the Quenta Silmarillion ends over 6000 years before the events in the Hobbit, so anyone looking for any of the same characters would be completely disappointing. Now, there are a few stand alone stories that I think could be pulled from the Silmarillion, such as the Children of Hurin maybe...though (spoiler alert) everyone dies at the end of that tale. Basically it's a Tragedy rather than a Fairy Story. Beren and Luthien maybe though....that would be so very hard to do.

I think with Christopher Tolkein preparing to put out a seperate Beren and Luthien book, that would lend itself to film adaptation much more than the Silmarillion. Also, in the Doctor Who clip, they obviously put that copy of the book there just to mess with people that theorize like this.

They destroyed The Hobbit. Trying to suck three films worth of profits out of a single short novel was their undoing. Christopher Tolkien will never give up the rights to the SIlmarillion. He is going to guard that book like Feanor guarding the SIlmarils. And if Jackson ever gets his hands on it, it will be worse than when Morgoth stole the Silmarils.

The Hobbit films were disappointing, but look at what he was capable of achieving (fan (for the most part) and critical acclaim, 17 Oscars for LOTR) when he and his team had 2-3 years of preparation time as opposed to just a couple of months. Yea, the Hobbit films weren't the greatest, but he has proven what he is capable of when given enough time to plan and prepare his films, especially for a world he feels so passionately about.

The issue is that The Silmarillion doesn't have a flowing narrative. There are lots of stories and intricate details, but nothing that would keep the attention of an audience for hours and hours. Lotr was a finished book, with a singular, entertaining story, while the Silmarillion is a collection of unfinished fragments summarizing thousands of years that manage to be both brief and intricately detailed. It could be done, but it would be quite possibly more expensive than the previous Tolkien adaptations, and be much longer and more boring for all but the most dedicated of fans. Or it would have to be a simplified and shortened narrative about the creation of Arda and the corruption and eventual defeat of Melkor, which could have potential but would be disappointing to say the least. And that's only scratching the surface of the issues the film could have. Personally I'd like to see a film with an original story, but still set in middle earth. I think a film about Numenor could be interesting. A Children of Hurin movie could be neat, like everyone's already said.
@southconwayNH
@southconwayNH 7 жыл бұрын
Any future middle earth films made by Jackson would more than likely be "original" in nature, such as Aragorn's hunt for Gollum. I believe they have those rights, as long as they occur during the span of the Hobbit & LOTR. The Silmarillion would require several films. I'm not sure the Ainulindalë would make for good viewing for anyone but the most ardent Tolkien fan, but something like Beren & Luthien would be great.

The story of Middle earth is still not finished, whilst there is the Silmarillion, the Children of Hurin, the Tale of Beren and Luthien and the Fall of Gondolin there is also the War in the North which takes place during the same time period as when Frodo embarks upon his journey to destroy the ring. All of which Jakson can use to make up for the disappointment that was the Hobbit
