I sincerely believe that the key is deliberate practice. With or without the instrument. Adam Neely has a video where he learned a whole piece without ever practicing with his bass guitar. My biggest frustration is that I am learning all these things now that I am 50 :(

0:39 that schedule is a little too relatable 😅

The gym metaphor is perfect especially considering that Petrucci himself compares guitar to gym (and he's jacked as fuck too)

I've found that if I keep my electric sitting out at home where I can grab it any time I'm on the couch or sitting at my desk and pick away for a few minutes unplugged is a great way to hone your chops. The hard part is putting the guitar down and not picking it right up again.

I’ve been watching this dude for about a week. Who is John Petrucci? I googled the guy and never hard of his band. This isn’t my genre per say I’m more of the garden variety blues rock guy that’s here to brush up on my technique but John Petrucci needs to be endorsing this guy.

You got it the other way around, Mike. Practice would John Petrucci. XD Great video and as always, you hit it right on the head! Thanks for the great insights. Shred on, my friend!

I think the only way to become good at ANY instrument is to just record yourself repeatedly and be self critical and pointing out your flaws that needs improvement .
@Guitarist19887 Жыл бұрын
You’re completely right, it’s worked for me to get better. You actually sometimes don’t hear yourself properly playing.

@@Guitarist19887 yeah, plus you have absolutely no clue on how intense your playing is (or lack thereof) unless you hear it on recording ,

Mike, do you think if someone was to take all the practicing tools that you know and would massively throw them at their guitar playing like sh t to the wall. Would that person eventually become really good just by sheer brute force?
Hahaha, the story about someone get fired because he get caught practicing in his office, heard it from Tomhess email. Not making fun of him though, sorry

I'm 40 years old, play guitar since i was 17 and can bet my life this is 100% true, every single claim (even the travel guitar thing) in this video was proven true to me during my life, in fact, since my teenage years, i never got to practice more than 3 hours a week and i have achieved more than anyone would think i could with such a limited practice time. I'm far from perfect but if you check some of my videos you'll know he is 100% correct
