Some unseen footage from the wonderful Woodland Sanctuary exhibition which launched 1 year ago. It was undoubtedly a highlight of my photography career so I'm very pleased to share some more insightful discussion between Joe Cornish and I.
There's been lots of questions about camera gear and the picture frames, so here's a brief overview:
The oldest print in the exhibition was Passing Through, which I made in January 2016 on a Sony A7ii 24 MP mirrorless camera.
Most of the other photos by me were made with a Sony A7Riii mirrorless 42MP camera and 24-70mm GM Sony lens.
Joe had also used the A7Riii, but many of his images were made with the Phase One 150MP digital back.
When viewed at the intended viewing distance, all the prints looked fantastically together.
The prints weren't glazed which allowed the detail and colour to really shine. The frames were custom made using solid ash wood. Materials were kept to a minimum. A smooth matt cotton paper was used throughout.

I appreciated so much this gentle, intelligent, and perceptive discussion of woodlands . Sometimes, one gets caught up in getting a good image, but forgets to appreciate the significance of the place or time. Talking through the various elements of all the these beautiful images caused me to appreciate each one in a much deeper way. And the extra bonus of referencing Eva Cassidy, reminded me how much I enjoyed her musical talents. Thank you for sharing this.

Great video and beautiful images, almost a fairy tale. Love the tranquillity of nature shots, take them my self. My favourites are mushrooms, pity they are only there for a week or so, so planning is of the most important since I have to travel an hour to my favourite spot,. But after years I learned to understand nature and the growth of mushrooms. And the images are so rewarding. Thanks so much for sharing this Simon

Thanks for the video Simon, I’ve enjoyed your discussions with Jo, as much as visiting the exhibition in Yorkshire. It’s great to see both your views of your own and each other’s images. On a positive note in response to Jo, our local council has a policy of leaving trees which fall or felled for safety, unless they are causing obstruction to footpaths to encourage biodiversity

Great video! Wonderful images! And Happy Birthday! It looks like your prints have been dry mounted on foamboard and then matted, is that correct? And there's no glazing (glass or plastic) in the frames? If you guys were selling these pieces, would you, or did you, provide glazing or leave them unglazed? Thanks!
@SimonBaxterPhotography
@SimonBaxterPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! That's right. They were sold without glazing at the exhibition, but it can be added retrospectively. Some have since been sold with glazing.

Bruce - It is true Australia's woodlands and forests are very different, but nonetheless there is so much beauty and wonder in them if you are prepared to take the time and look. I photograph a lot around Canberra and on the South Coast of NSW and I have no trouble finding good material. In fact, I think we are blessed to have such interesting forests and woodlands. The feel of them is very different to other forests and woodlands around the world. Some of our trees such as the smooth barked gums have a wonderful sculptural quality about them and there is often lovely contrast between the smooth white gums and darker foliage and darker trunks of other trees. Yes, the light can be challenging, but if you spend enough time there are always opportunities.
