So it sounds like the fix to this would be to have a news cycle that focuses on actual stories instead of huddling around drama like a bunch of highschoolers.

Media should preface EVERY story about an upcoming “bombshell” by a standard disclaimer: “X announced today that a story about Y is to be released; it’s possible that the story is just bait to get us to speculate, but until this is actually released, we will give no further details.” Then NO FOLLOW UP REPORTS unless the release is overdue; and then report ONLY that it’s overdue.

This is also called "argument inoculation" in social psychology. You introduce an idea to a group, you give them a simple defense of the idea and then they are more resistant to new/conflicting information about the idea even if the idea is clearly false.
@grimmgoosegoose2166 жыл бұрын
Felix B no, I trying to give another reason as to why individuals who believe wrong information persist in that belief.
@xponen6 жыл бұрын
"argument inoculation" can also be used to prevent people from believing fake news; 1st) you introduce a fake news to a group, then 2nd) you reveal it is actually fake/a sham. The people who have been "inoculated" are able to resist real fake news later.

@Kang Jin, no I get it, what @Grimm GooseGirl is saying is that basically the first thing you saw is what you believe the most. This is an interesting quirk of human mind, you could use it to both help protect people from fake news or to instead manipulate people to believe fake news depending on your goal... after you 'inoculate' a person with your "facts" then this person will respond differently to a similar fact in the future... this mechanism work just like a Vaccine; you have to 'inoculate' a person when he's young or as early as possible.

I love how well it highlights the need for subsequent skepticism. Part of the problem is how much news organisations wind up buying into the bait because they need something to sell, and a potential bombshell chyron gets more attention and keeps more viewers than a potential bait one. @justthecoolestdudeyo94466 жыл бұрын
You're right in that the politicians are the number 1 guilty party here, but the media isn't the victims, they have been raking in profits over hyperinflating GOP trolling over other important information because said behavior gets more eyeballs per minute (and therefore revenue) watching their news channel, which is all they care about in a for-profit, corporate newsroom. They benefit greatly from the cartoonishly awful behavior that they can spend days focusing on instead of more complicated, but pressing issues.

myky992 Most of what he says is true, but is portrayed in a manner to be incredibly condescending and meanspirited. This makes the opposition angry, which is the punchline to the joke "they can't handle the truth", which in turn also invalidates any arguments they have. SImply, his schtick is to present some kind of fact while simultaneously making his opposition furious, which makes his opposition look irrational and gives the audience a good laugh.
