If 74million N of force doesn't make sense for a humanoid to create, forceful enough to basically kill in one hit (like the power of a rocket) and as you've already covered, Captain Falcon is wearing gloves... What if his gloves are coated with a fairly flammable/combustible substance which is what ignites the Falcon Punch? Chlorine Trifluoride for example is able to set fire to almost anything by mere contact, so if Captain Falcon's gloves are coated in a layer of flouride under the Chlorine Triflouride applied, he is safe from the usual chemical reactions but any of his unsuspecting foes become easy, combustible targets for the falcon punch. As a sidenote, maybe that's why his suit also shields his eyes - some of the reaction this chemical causes releases gas that is known to damage the eyes. Regardless, excellent episode as usual! :)
@89ludeawakening15 жыл бұрын
Only one problem, this theory is instantly debunked by the punch itself. If his gloves were coated in a flammable substance then they would continue to burn after ignited. If anything his gloves are very flame retardant because the flames are extinguished right after he executes the punch.
@kerrynoir41295 жыл бұрын
@@89ludeawakening1 While I accept the idea in general, I don't think I was clear enough. What I meant to say was that perhaps his gloves have flouride as a coating and the chlorine triflouride on top of that. This is actually how this substance is stored - you coat the container with flouride on the inside for the CT to not react with the container itself. But yeah, I should've probably rearranged my comment to make it clearer.
@GreyThing13375 жыл бұрын
@@kerrynoir4129 That actually makes more sense, that is why he has to spend so long on the wind up as he's secretly applying the flouride coating. Then once he punches it will burn off the flame retardant gloves. This way he also doesn't break every bone in his arm shoulder and much of his body buy throwing a punch with such force. The game f-zero might give some credence to being able to travel at high Gs but would not explain why he wouldn't be destroyed by Newton's Third Law upon contact.

Great video, Kyle, as always! Two thoughts. First, because of equal and opposite reactions, Captain Falcon's body would have to be able to withstand the force of accelerating his fist to that ludicrous speed. Furthermore, that same force would need to be transferred to the ground beneath him, so he would need some solid footing to even get the punch moving. Alternatively, he would have to be incredibly massive everywhere besides his arm to prevent his body from recoiling during the punch. This seems more plausible since a Falcon Punch can be made falling through the air. The second point is related to the end of the punch. You described the force imparted supposing the punch lands, but the Falcon Punch is one of the most telegraphed moves in the game. What if he misses? Suddenly, all that force is distributed across his arm as the tensile strength of his bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons fight to stop the fist at the moment of full extension. If his arm couldn't handle those stresses, he might shoot off his arm, either tearing from the shoulder or shredding the whole darn thing, in a suborbital trajectory. It this is a risk, then it would behoove Captain Falcon to resist the temptation to... show us his moves!

Here is how you get into footnotes: Love your show Kyle, been watching for a year and watched all the old episodes. Blessed be Argan oil. You are the perfect combination of brains, beauty, and brawn. Now, here is some math: When you “break wind”, the mass of that is 0.0371 grams or 0.0000371 kilograms and the sun is 1.989 x 10^30 kilograms, so the sun has the same mass as 5.361186 x 10^34 blasts from behind. 7.7 billion people in the world, at an average of 14 “events” per day, gives you 107,800,000,000 wind breaking events per day. 3.9347 x 10^13 per year. So multiply that by 13.7 billion years and you get 5.390539 x 10^23 of these that we would produce in the length of the universe. So, you divide the number of flatulence occurrences that the sun is composed of by the number we can produce in one universe: (5.361186 x 10^34) / (5.390539 x 10^23) And you get: 99,455,471,892.5 universal timespans for the current population to boom boom out the mass of the sun.

@syxxvralrock57595 жыл бұрын
Very good point, and would there be enough time for the air to get super heated before the end of his punch to cause such a fire? The reason why it happens to space ships is that they go from the vaccuum of space to trying to penetrate the atmosphere of a rotating planet, it's not sudden combustion like the falcon punch is. [Or for Kirby Mains the Pinecone Punch.] It takes time to re-enter and the temperature builds up over that time.

Hi Kyle, Huge fan of the show and love how much I learn from watching you. I have some issues on the data you're using to make your hypothesis. Firstly, in the n64 version the flame falcon does appear in a single frame but C.Falcon is indeed charging the energy before releasing it. It's visible by the yellow glow he emits and this is even more visible in the latest smash game where energy is concentrating on his fist before being released. So we can assume that the flames are not only produced by his velocity but also some kind of energy released when he hits. Another thing is you're only considering his falcon punch move but his other moves also emit flames. If we focus on the falcon kick it's instantly igniting when used so I think we can assume that the suit he's wearing has more to do with the flames than his actual speed. And to prove that further let's compare the falcon kick to another character's move, lucario's extreme speed. When performed simultaneously, lucario is moving faster than C.Falcon so if the smash physics apply to all the characters he should burn as well. However he doesn't so it proves that C.Falcon's flames are not a result of his speed but produced by his gear. And last point but it's more trivia, according to your "why you don't want superstrenght" video, if C.Falcon was to hit his opponents with that much force, he should be crushed instantly on impact. So either way he doesn't punch them that strongly or because video games.

Just because kirby was sent flying, just below the ceiling of the blast zone and everybody else is fighting with such moderate to high damage % near the edge of the platform, unaware that they're directly beneath him. Every professional kirby player knows to fall or fly safely to the opposite end to think of a strategy to knock them all away with just a simple, yet deviously ingenious move, that may have been used once or twice per minute, nothing too excessively. But what sort of attack would work? I got it.... a dash attack. With everybody's backs being turned, they'll never see it coming. >:)

Hey Kyle! this is defiantly off topic but I was skimming through some of your old videos and I had a couple (2) ideas. 1: the first one is about telekinesis. I know you don't like telekinesis because you don't understand how it could work, but hear me out for a second because I think you answered your own question without even realizing it. In many of your Thor's hammer episodes you attribute many of it's properties to the ability to manipulate theoretical gravitation particles. In my estimation if you gave a person a similar ability somehow, they would be able to manipulate objects in any way they wanted by altering how much gravity affects an object in reason to other objects in it's environment. Now this raises intriguing complications about lifting massive object by playing fast and loose with gravity. however increasing a persons own gravity until they turn into a black hole is certainly a interesting prospect. 2: I want to talk about laser bee's, as you where doing a "not" super villain phone call you offhandedly mentioned dispatching a unsuspecting victim by utilizing laser bee's. HOWEVER, as I am myself an aspiring super villain I just had to know how possible a swarm bee's equipped with DEADLY LASERS are. Assuming we can hookup bees with electronics that could control and coordinate there actions ( I mean we can already control the moment of a cockroach with a smartphone so it doesn't seem to unlikely) the real question here is can we equip a bee with a DEADLY LASER that is small and light enough for it to lift. This begs the question of exactly how deadly we want the laser to be. Well assuming your going to be controlling a entire nest (around 20,000 to 50,000 bee's I believe) of bee's, as I'd think you'd want to if not only for the pure intimidation value, I don't think each bee needs a laser that's necessarily a parented kill shot. According to the brief amount of googling I did, I can't definitively say what the exact energy output of a laser would have to be, but I did find that given the laser your using would necessarily have to have a very small area of contact, and you can find some terrifyingly small laser engravers (not to mention the dangerous as hell lasers you can just extract from a laser disk player). If you use a high frequency wavelength for the laser, it wouldn't have to be all that big or powerful to have it do some damage. However we run into a problem with the bee's themselves, an average female worker bee (the ones you'd most likely be using) can carry up to there own body weight in extra mass in flight... which is about 90mg (.0000198416 pounds). Sadly that is much less than any laser that I could find during my quick search. Maybe we can make robot bees? Oh yea actually pertaining to the episode, flaming fist are cool, but how fast would he have to punch if he wanted to heat up the air enough to CAUSE A CHAIN REACTION THAT TURNS THE ATMOSPHERE INTO A FLAMING BALL OF PLASMA!!! I swear, i'm not crazy

How hard and fast would the superhero All Might from My Hero Academia have to punch in order to create a MASSIVE tornado like we see him do in the show? In order for a single punch to create that much air movement I'm sure it would have to be something ridiculous, perhaps more so than the Falcon Punch? Anyways, keep up the awesome videos. Technically, a mantis shrimp doesn't fling it's "fist." Its more accurate to say that it's punch is "spring loaded"
@simba20235 жыл бұрын
Huge fan of the show! One slight thought/correction: you calculated that the mass portion of the punch's equation was simply the mass of Captain Falcon's fist, but as a trained fighter, he wouldn't simply snap his arm out, but would rather engage most of his body in the move, starting by planting his foot firmly and basically acting as an enormous spring (or mantis shrimp punching mechanism). He would then lunge forward and essentially put all his weight behind this punch. I don't have exact figures, but I imagine this would greatly increase the available energy due to having far more mass behind the same size impactor, as well as make it slightly more conceivable for such a punch to be thrown. Granted, this would still require insanely overpowered muscles, bone, and skin, but that should just make Falcon even MORE intimidating!

Kyle, if we "theoretically" made a weapon that shoot a high pressurized gas/liquid, we should be able to replicate the effect (given that the material is resistent enough to resist such pressure without getting cut like butter). but is it possible with today's tecnology? maybe with a small enough test subj.....i mean Radious of the nosecone and the right proportion of density/speed (since increasing the density could allough slower speeds but it would make more difficoult reaching them). a totally non evil fan from italy.

You may have meant to say it, but just nerd-clarifying that afaik the fire comes from the compressed air/plasma on the other side of the shockwave, not the heatshield/glove itself. Yes the heatshield/glove gets hot, but the fire we see is from the air itself against the shockwave.

Hey Kyle 👋 love the show and I try to watch every episode as soon as it comes out but I've noticed something that happens alot and I can understand the reason behind it but when ever u have calculated someones punch force (one punch man, Captain America, Captain falcon, hulk, etc.) U always use only the mass of someone hand but last time I checked fists are connected to arms and arms to body's so isn't there some sort of mass percentage of someones body weight that is used in a punch that could make the calculations a bit more precise. Its a small thing but I'm just curious

Taking these numbers: Force = 74 MN Area of a fist (approx.) = 60 cm^2 One can get a pressure = Force/area = 12.3 GPa. Using Newton's approximation of impact depth for fast moving objects: Depth = Length of projectile * (Density of a projectile / Density of a target) Assuming you are punching a face, density of a fist and density of a face are really close, so the fist won't go further than its own length (as you have mentioned in a video). Given the speed and contact pressure, the fist and the opponents face would probably liquify and explode from the shockwave. P.S. As I use to say: "Everything is like a liquid, when it's moving fast enough." P.P.S. That was quite a "face-melting punch" **ba dum tss**

The SR71 had a problem with leaking fluids at high speeds due to the materials expanding, and the later Concorde was designed with this consideration. Regarding using the FAA equation used to calculate heating per square meter. This is a situation where one should not assume that the equation scales down to work for objects the size of a fist. Friction and drag equations are often simplifications that only apply in certain size ranges as different effects dominate at different size ranges.

Hey, Kyle! Awesome show as always dood, but I have to ask: why are you only using the mass of his fist when calculating force? When a punch is thrown with proper form then most of a puncher's weight should be behind it as one should generally be stepping into the attack as well. I think this is especially applicable for Captain Falcon as he seems to throw even more of his body behind a punch than any real person would. Using his full 140kg canon body-weight, since in-game he definitely slides his whole body forward with the punch, that'd put his Kinetic energy closer to 500 MJ and then increase the rest of the measurements to even more ridiculous numbers.

With that kind of force behind a small area of contact like his hand I think captain falcon is far better suited for Mortal Kombat then Super Smash Bros, as his fist would go clean through must humanoid opponents. Or depending on bone flexibility and the deceleration that his opponent adds to his punch, he may just have a hand stuck inside a smoldering chest cavity. Depending on the area of contact and the material of his gloves/how quickly they dissipate heat he may be able to keep it pg by cauterizing the wound but if it hit a major artery the blood would still end up spraying a fair bit, and this is ignoring the splatter that would take place just from the bone and muscle etc that would be displaced by his hand entering a body.

@6:50 What are you talking about? Orbital (and suborbital) rockets go much faster than this, though if you contest their 'on this planet' nature, what about the manhole cover that launched off an underground nuclear test? The single frame of slow-mo that it appeared in says it was moving *at least* 60 km/s, or roughly 25 times faster than your falcon punch (which is why it probably vaporized over the next fraction of a second). That aside, this is honestly a surprisingly consistent answer-I'm not an expert on captain falcon... like, at all, having never played or really watched any nintendo games, but from the short clips shown in the video, the associated kinetic energy seems to be in about the right ballpark. As a fun fact, if he's really energy efficient, then he'll be burning just a couple burgers worth of calories per punch (food, and fuels in general, have a *lot* of energy in them. It also takes a lot of energy to heat things up, which is why guns are such good weapons and why lasers suck-guns take the massive amount of energy released by combustion and convert it to a projectile which is much more effective at destroying something than the same amount of energy applied as heat. Thinking about it another way, melting something means sheering *all* the bonds between the molecules. On the other hand, cutting/piercing/ripping something to pieces requires breaking almost none by comparison, which is, again, why laser suck for most purposes-heating is an *incredibly* energy-ineffective way to damage things). The force calculation at the end makes no sense-force is not a useful measure of damage done, energy is. You, for some reason, converted energy back to force, but it's meaningless-yeah, it would be like 2 saturn rockets taking off on your face... for a minuscule fraction of a second. It tells us nothing. What *does* tell us something is the kilogram of TNT number, for example. Though nowhere near all that energy would actually be delivered into the target, or even released, but would rather be reabsorbed (as heat and tearing bones and flesh) into the arm as it comes to a stop at the end of his reach, having punched clean through his opponent while shredding his own hand xD

A couple of things I'd like to point out. Since his glove clearly isn't on fire right after the punch, there must be something else that ignites, as @Kerry Noir pointed out in his/her comment. Another point I'd like emphasize is the velocity you discovered needed to ignite Capt.'s glove: you could've corroborated it by comparing the actual velocity of his fist in game (with pixel measuring, like MatPat likes to do over Game Theory). Last but not least, you calculated the force of his punch only considering his fist's mass: That would make sense if he was only jabbing, like his "A" attack, but for the Falcon Punch he clearly "puts his whole body" into the punch. I'm clueless to how much of his mass would get through the punch though, has anyone ever studied the physics of martial arts? And talking about Game Theory, MaPat also theorized that F-Zero is just an elaborated show for the fans, with no real danger for the contestants. And from the information you laid out in this video, that theory makes more sense. Because no way double the force of the Saturn V take-off equals 25% damage!

A question I've had in mind for a while: If at low speed you lose body heat and risk getting frostbite, and at high speeds you start heating up, there MUST be a point where the energy you lose and the energy you gain cancel out and you should be threoretically fine.

Hi Kyle, a martial artist here to correct something. You're a bit wrong about the distance it would take his fist to stop, that is if it would be in real life. If you are punching someone in real life you don't just want your hand to stop after aproximately 6-8cm, but in stead you would want to punch through someone (like Imagine would actually be the case for captain Falcon) using the full mass and rotation of your body as you do so. In stead of only having the length of your hand to stop you would in stead have the full length (almost) of your arm to stop, meaning the kinetic energy would drop a considerable amount if I remember my physics correctly. I still think it would be enough force to litteraly punch a hole in someone but that's up for you to calculate. Loved the video!

The first time I heard of Falcon Punch was in reference to a combo in Yu-Gi-Oh. It used and equip spell called Big Bang Shot that banishes the monster it is equipped to when the equip spell leabes the field and Mist Vally Falcon, a monster that requires you to return a card you control to your hand. They would equip the spell to the opposing monster, then attack to bounce it back to their hand, thus banishing the target. Its worth mentioning because the art in Big Bang Shot has art that closely resembles the attack the combo is named after. Also, you know for a fact people would yell out "FALCON PUUUUUUNCH!!!!" as they attack for game

8:45 "estimating the mass of Captain Falcon's fist..." But Captain Falcon's fist is connected to his arm, which is connected to his body, which has a LOT more mass than just his fist. It might not change the final number much (or it might, I'm not good at math), but it's worth considering that any correct technique in martial arts, like a punch, should generate force by efficient and well timed movement of the entire body.
