I figured they'd be higher tech, but I suppose if they were too high tech they wouldn't be reliable (or cheap). One thing I'm curious about, do you have multiple sets of arms, legs, and hooks?
@hookie4 жыл бұрын
I do! I mainly use the same pair of arms and legs each day, but I have spares (and spare parts) for emergencies. I also have waterproof versions for swimming. I made a video on the so called 'High Tech' arms and why I don't use them. You can view it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m32opWOGnNaqia8

Tom Nash I just binged your channel so I watched that shortly after commenting this, answered my own question :) It’s a very interesting engineering problem and I’m impressed so much progress has happened recently, but it’s a shame that it’s bottlenecked by battery tech and reliability issues. I can’t wait for Terminator tech to arrive lol

Thanks for sharing, this was interesting. The explanation of the locking mechanism on the left arm was confusing though. Are your prosthetics asymmetric? Is the locking mechanism only on the left arm? What exactly do you mean that it locks into place, is it the elbow joint that locks into place or the grip? Can you control the grip of the left hooks?
@hookie4 жыл бұрын
Both arms and hooks are identical yet mirrored (symmetrical) ... The locking mechanism is exclusive to the elbow and is activated when I engage/disengage the cable that runs up my shoulder (as shown in the video). The hooks are held together only by the rubber bands ... hope that helps! :)

I love Hi Tech gear like this. I can see that the wrist is made of carbon fiber, what material are the hooks made off?
@hookie4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! The hooks are made from Stainless Steel actually... they have some rubber on the inside as well :)
@Tonicwine9994 жыл бұрын
@@hookie Yeah I saw in a different video that you mentioned they were SS. If I had hooks I think they'd have to be titanium... I'd expect you don't particularly need them to be lightweight but for me they go nicely with carbon. I used to do a bit of stainless steel etching. I'd like to see a set of nice polished hooks that are etched - I'd like a bit more bling ;-)
@hookie4 жыл бұрын
@@Tonicwine999 Haha! Yeah why not. Lightweight is probably the most important feature of prosthetics though, for me at least!

@@hookie It's a post WWII US film about veterans returning home. The guy with the hooks wasn't a professional actor, but won the Academy Award for Best Supporting actor.
@moxee333 жыл бұрын
Hi. Are there different types of mechanisms you can switch out with the hook? for example if you are working on something that could be pierced by a hook or picking up something super fragile like a glass pipette? I would have thought they would have attached a gauge to read the pressure of your grip so you don't have to experiment dropping or crushing your host's wine glasses at a party! :o)
@hookie3 жыл бұрын
Hey Moxee33! Great question. They actually make several different attachments in lieu of the hooks, designed for various activities. However, seeing as this would require a constant changing of devices (and probably needing to carry them with me), I opt to become proficient in using the hooks for everything! :)
@moxee333 жыл бұрын
@@hookie that makes perfect sense. I just have one other question .could you shoot a gun if you wanted or do they make special guns to use with hooks?
@hookie3 жыл бұрын
@@moxee33 Funny you should ask. I tried that recently with a shotgun but to no avail. However if I angled my wrist and rotated the hook I definitely could have :)
