Yeah, Phil Anselmo started that trend, but he was actually a good traditional metal singer as well, at least in his early years. Now all most metal "singers" do is scream, growl and bark, which as Randy admits takes very little talent. Singing like the singers I mentioned above takes not only natural talent, but years of practice.

It is supposed to rehabilitate people. Glad it did in his case
@Micas0996 жыл бұрын
Randy wasn't "rehabilitated" because he never committed a crime, so nothing to rehabilitate. He was imprisoned even though the band put up bail. I just said the experience had a big effect on him, not that he was in any way rehabilitated. If you watch the LoG video As the Palaces Burn, it would probably make more sense, or even better, read his book. It's remarkable.
@Gfious6 жыл бұрын
I knew that my usage of the word "rehabilitate" could cause such a misunderstanding. What I meant was that it made him sober up and have a new outlook about life, and that prisons were first envision to do the same: Change a person so that they can fit into a society and change their outlook about life, and even other humans.
@princealbert6176 жыл бұрын
You know when I was watching this video I was thinking to myself how much Randy seems to have changed since his time in that prison... He just seems to have a different look on things. Prison can do that to people. A month after I turned 21 almost 12 yrs ago I got a DUI, I missed a court date and they put a bench warrent out for my arrest and 3 or 4 years later they finally got me. I got picked up on a Friday and I couldn't see the judge till Monday so I had to sit in prison for 3 days. But I didn't know how long I was gonna be in there cuz when I got picked up the said they were gonna take me to the courthouse to see the judge but they took me straight to prison without telling me. So I was clueless for 3 days... I couldn't get ahold of anybody to find out what was going on. They put me on maximum security... I was with people that killed people. All I did in there was THINK! I told myself I'm NEVER coming back to this place! When they called my name to go see the judge... they also called maybe 12 other people and they had us handcuffed to one another in groups of 3, I was handcuffed to this old crazy looking dude that took a shotgun and blew his girlfriend's head right in front of her daughter... I was there for a fuckin DUI... I didn't kill anybody, I didn't hit anybody, I wasn't speeding or swerving... I got pulled over cuz it was July 4th and they had a check point. Prison can change you especially when you don't know what's going on... I can't imagine what Randy went through.

@MacSmithvox6 жыл бұрын
He definitely practices. Lol
@noahswanigan93506 жыл бұрын
He never said he didn't practice... he said he knew how to do it and it was easy, but in order to get as good as he was, he had to have practiced. He's one of the best screamers of all time. I tried to start learning how when I was in 8th grade or so, having been a metalhead my whole life. My personal taste changed and I grew out of loving more core sounding bands like LoG of other groove metal-ish bands like DevilDriver and shit like that, ditched deathcore, ditched metalcore for the most part, but at the time I loved anything heavy at all, the more the better for the most part. It took me 3 months just to be able to make a sound that sounded LIKE a scream. If recorded properly it actually sounded really good, but in reality it was dog shit. I never could have performed like that without it being a pile of diarrhea dog shit... It took me another year, maybe even 2 or more, before I learned ANY other different way to scream.... I didn't know where I could take it as far as the sounds I COULD make vs the sounds I WANTED to make, so it took a while. It took another year or two after that before it turned into something worthwhile, maybe even longer... my current, and best scream, developed from trying to figure out how to sing clean but still have rasp, and to improve power and force and control overall. I had my scream somewhat down if I had the right posture and support and warmed up properly but I had no true technique, no endurance... Good range as far as my scream went but not as far as capability to project variety. Anyone can scream if they try long enough but who can sing, scream, rap, sing with grit and power like all the biggest metal vocalists did (Hetfield, Taylor, M Shadows, Sully Erna... I'll throw Ivan Moody in there even though he's a dog shit lyricist and his band is generic even if it's heavy (Motograter and Ghost Machine were better ffs) ... Eventually I Got it down and realized singing with grit properly (At least I think.. it sounds good and doesn't hurt, but my range and control aren't at a pro level yet) could be turned into a scream, just how I wanted it. Going through all this personally just to get to a sub pro level, I know DAMN WELL Randy worked his fucking DICK OFFFFFF ... He had to have. There's no other way, whether you have a natural talent for it or not.
@noahswanigan93506 жыл бұрын
Also don't pick me apart too hard.. I know Hetfield didn't scream, I know Shadows didn't rap, etc ... Well, Hetfield screamed once on an album and a few times live but that was it. My point was they all had the grit I was aiming for which was a tool in the arsenal of the variety I spoke of. If you can be diverse I promise screaming can become second nature... just keep trying. If you love it enough it should be natural eventually.

He says this all jokingly like he doesnt take his music very seriously but if you actually pick apart the lyrics of songs like "delusion pandemic" and "hourglass" it becomes clear that he cares quite a bit, maybe not for the growling part or whatever but he has learned to express genuine frustration in this way. Think about being at one of his concerts and he just breaks down in the middle of a song and starts laughing and saying stuff like "I can't believe I make a living off of this."

I gave up a long time ago on trying to sound like Chris Cornell. I was in my 20s when I realized that I would never do it, he's just too awesome, and the reason is because he sounds like himself. I learned the lesson which Randy here is touching on: stop trying to be like someone else, start finding your own voice. For 20 years I kept at my lessons, developed my abilities, my style. Just for fun the other day I tried singing some Soundgarden songs and found I was crushing every single one. I guess what I'm saying is, you have to at some point abandon your teachers and find your own way. It's only after you've gone down that very long road that you realize you've become your own teacher.

Well, I can relate to this. I used to imitate the zombie noises from COD WAW zombies often when I was in my early teens and eventually when I started to get into metal more, I decided to give a crack at vocal covering some Soilwork and Machine Head songs. Came naturally for me and have done covers ever since.

He's said for years that he prefers punk over metal going as far as calling Lamb of God a punk band. The fact that he considers growling a joke does not surprise me.
@MarlinDart6 жыл бұрын
Mark Morton their lead guitarist, prefers playing and listening to blues. Metal encompasses so many types of music. Open your ears.
