How does rap / hiphop work so dang well in Hamilton even though it's about the Founding Fathers, people who have no business rapping? Well, in this multi-part video series I will delve into the myriad of reasons how rap works in Hamilton.
If you're new to this channel, I'm Howard Ho, and I make videos about the musical Hamilton analyzing its musical themes, leitmotifs, chord progressions, melodies, and now genres. Along the way I fold into it discussions of the musical 1776, Sondheim, The Music Man, Les Miz, West Side Story, and the entire history of the rap musical (rapsical?). Let's go!

Not to mention the entire character of King George!! His 3 songs are just the same melody/reprises and he even expresses disbelief in the final song that George Washington gives up the presidency “I wasn’t aware that was something a person could do.” He is entrapped by the melody and by extension the mindset of how a country should be run. Sorry if you address this at all in the next video, I haven’t watched it yet.

I thought Hamilton had no dialogue because Lin wanted the songs to tell the story Idk I may be wrong just wondering
@HowardHoMusic
@HowardHoMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Lin actually began Hamilton as a concept album, so it would be entirely song-based. But naturally many concept albums that became Broadway musicals later added dialogue scenes or exposition songs to thread the story together more.

I have seen an interview with Lin where he said that in the early days it was gonna be a traditional book musical. They had hired & worked with a playwright for a while but realised that due to the elevated nature of hiphop/rap, even well written & acted sceens just fell flat.

4:00 Can I just point out how Burr literally doesn’t exist here. Quite ironic, since all people talk about is his duel with Hamilton and how he killed him. Even those who support or criticize him seems to only focus on the fact he shot a man. Not saying that’s not bad, but it actually somehow overshadowed his life’s work to a curious public. Edit: Damn it, I got the time stamp wrong. Of course I did. Fixed.

Thanx Howard for yet another great video! Maybe it is interesting to go back in time even further. The big musical structure that Lin creates with the combination of rap and songs resembles the structure of opera and oratorium with 'recitativo' for the musically/rhytmic spoken parts and 'aria' for the more melodic songs. Funfact; the early opera's were usually about their 'founding fathers' , because people in the renaissance used story's from the Greek and Roman era, because they lai the foundation of European civilisation. (sorry if my English isn't correct, I am Dutch)

i was listening to the soundtrack and noticed another biggie reference. in cabinet battle #2, jefferson says “and if you don’t know, now you know, mr president” which is a reference to biggie’s song juicy.

Throughout history, there are also many examples of theatrical plays being written in rhyme or with a certain "rhythm" scheme in the dialogue. To me, it feels like the rap music in Hamilton also harkens back to that tradition in a quite genius way.

This might be the chance to confirm a thought I had for years: In the musical Cats and the song Rum Tum Tugger is the classic version of it in line with some Rap songs without being a Rap song? For me who is not so educated in Rap music it feels like the combination of almost spoken lines like "if you offer me a rat I much prephere a mouse, if you offer me a mouse I rather have a rat" and the sung parts like "Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore" gives the song a Rap music feel to it. Johan.
@HowardHoMusic
@HowardHoMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Rap can also describe a style of speak-singing. Lots of songs used that type of singing, but really rap only became its own genre of music starting in the late 70s.
@JohanMsWorld
@JohanMsWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Howard Ho Thats why I asked. Rap was not a thing back in early 80ties but you can still see the linage to that in Tugger. Johan.

Really cool video! Looking forward to more. In musical theater parlance songs like "Trouble" from The Music Man are called "patter songs." Another famous, and much older, example would be "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" from Pirates of Penzance.
@hjw9717
@hjw9717 4 жыл бұрын
_whatshername "Trouble" is a patter song, but the opening number of Music Man, "Rock Island," which is what this video was referencing, is not. Gilbert and Sullivan and Sondheim canon show that- like in My Eyes Are Fully Open, or Getting Married Today-patter songs can be partially or entirely sung by the "patterer", not just spoken. In rap or the rhythmic speech of Rock Island, nothing is sung.

@@HowardHoMusic Well, not what I was expecting coming here, but why I stayed :D I'm surprise anyone outside of France would have heard of it, and I wonder how the dialogs translate. On a totally different note, since Hamilton is soon to be released, I create a little viz guide for the themes and motifs. It also includes a "search engine" if you want to find more themes. Would love your feedback if you have the opportunity to have a look :) theonlinedots.com/2020/06/30/85/

What was said about rap's essentially being arguments is apt. Just look at the way rap is used in 8 mile, particularly the scenes where they are literally in rap battles.
