The family gathered together every week to watch Perry Mason. What a great show and most of every episode took place in the courtroom. They didn't do much out of the studio filming on locations. Never knew Burr's private life, just figured he was probably one of the most desirable catches in Hollywood at that time. He was so successful. I watched his other show, Ironside. It was no comparison to Perry Mason though. Him being in a wheelchair was not any kind of display of his acting talents. He sort of gave the orders and the younger cast members characters did all the investigating and leg work. And it was them that were involved primarily in any action sequences. Ironside wasn't that interesting, when the main actor was really just a talking head. I wish they would replay those Perry Mason Episodes on TV. If they did a lot of people would watch. Burr being a Gay Man isn't really a big shock. There were quite a few like Burr in Hollywood. Rock Hudson was another one. I think he had a lengthy relationship with Jim Nabors the fellow that played the role of Gomer Pyle USMC. A lot hid who and what they really were for fear of losing their careers.

Wailing sirens and the red screen shimmering on the new colour tv that had to be repaired every week. And the catch phrase? 'I drew a blank at the lab chief'. Must've been the inspiration for Elvis Costello's Watching The Detectives. 'She's filing her nails as they're dragging the lake.' 'The detective comes to check if you belong to the parents who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance'.

For the young among you, it is worth mentioning here that in the 1950's, sex between two men was a serious crime in ALL of the 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states). Gay men went to extremes to hide their sexuality in those days for a variety of reasons. In Hollywood, there was surely more acceptance, but the vast majority of the United States was a very uncomfortable place for those who were gay. Tremendous progress has been achieved.

My Goodness! This is certainly the Age of Revelations! I had never heard of Burr's homosexuality before! My mother loved watching Perry Mason. I later loved watching Ironside! Well, together with mum. But we also adored Rock Hudson. It just never crossed our minds that either of them were gay! Nor Richard Chamberlain! But if one doesn't think along those lines at all and all these actors were never really in our personal lives, then we just enjoyed their tremendous acting skills on screen or on a theatre stage and that is it. I will absolutely continue to cherish those viewing times regardless!❤

Big mistake you kept mentioning Perry Mason but it was Ironside series that was the last of his TV series when he got sick.

No, he did a "series" of Perry Mason television films, before his death.

Actually, it WAS Perry Mason. After the 'Ironside" series ended, Burr and several other cast members from the original Perry Mason series appeared in a number of Perry Mason (2-hour) TV movies. These went on into the 1990s.

@@roberthenleynola Exactly. 1993's "The Case of the Killer Kiss" He was dying when it was filmed, but lets us remember him the way we wanted, strong, with an arm around Della, and a smile.

Great video! It never even crossed my mind that he was gay. As another person posted- his private life was really no business of ours.

He did a good job of keeping it secret because up until a minute ago I never knew he was one of those kind.

Love watching Raymond Burr! He had 2 extremely successful TV series which is quite rare even to this day. Back in the 50’s to even 80’s, alternate sexual orientation would have impacted any actor; no matter how successful they were. So Raymond had to protect his career, so it’s very understandable and absolutely acceptable. As a reminder, Rock Hudson did the same; and so did quite a few others. Anyways, how they lived their lives is none of our business, we enjoy watching them because they were great at what they did. I will continue to watch all of the wonderful episodes of Perry Mason an Ironside every chance I get!

So sad for him that he died "in the closet," still fearful of revealing his true self. ... But it was 1993 when he passed and he SHOULD have stood up and said, "GODDAMIT I'M GAY, SO WHAT?" ... My gay Father grabbed a woman and made me in 1962 to SAVE HIS LIFE because in rural Ontario in the 60's you could be found swinging from a tree by your neck if you were discovered to be gay. ... I EXIST by virtue of nothing other than the mortal fear my Father felt as a small town gay man.
