Actually the hardening is a two-step process 4:50 (unless he has some special steel). First heat it op to glowing cherry red and quench it. At this step the steel is very likely to shatter (like glass). Then heat it up to a lesser temperature, depending on the use intended. That process is called tempering.
@13374me3 жыл бұрын
While the video is in that hardening would make it easier to crack/shatter, the tempering is what makes it less likely to do this. You harden by quenching, which is a single step, tempering is a separate thing to reset the crystal structure of the metal, it toughens the metal. You need to temper a blade for it to be useful, but it's not a part of hardening it.

Tony Swatton had a show on KZbin called "Man At Arms", where he made weapons from movies and games on requests. It's on Awe Me channel. Nowadays it is a different (equally as good) team of blacksmiths that do the Man At Arms show. (Man At Arms: Reforged)

@hamanu6663 жыл бұрын
I am happy the skills exist to still make these weapons. I have been binge watching various smith videos on youtube and find them fascinating. The art of blacksmithing, specifically bladesmithing is alive and well in the 21st century with no hint of disappearing like the skills that saw the end of Damascus weapon making in the early 1800s.

if the blade wouldn't be hardened it would bend permanently and get dents, because it's still soft, tempering after the hardening process prevents the blade from cracking or breaking

Stage combat...all the moves are choreographed and rehearsed a LOT. My fencing club is maybe a mile from Tony's shop in Burbank, and we still have some of his weapons on the walls. There's a definite technique to good stage combat, but it's hard to explain in writing, but it really boils down to understanding where your weapon is, how to manipulate it safely, and not doing anything stupid.
