I am Northumbrian born & breed! Northumberland has more castle then any other county in the Uk, with over 70 castle sites. We also have Hadrians wall that was built in 122 AD by the Romans.The wall actually inspired the wall in the game of thrones! It is also the most beautiful county in England, but I am slightly biased!!

I'm from North Yorkshire. If I could move to Northumberland I would - North Yorkshire has it's treasures for sure, and I love where I live but Northumberland holds something special to me. The scenery, the history, the people. As a plus, in a way, it's nice to not live there and to just visit. Would I not be as in love with Northumberland if I lived there, I wonder?

I love studying history and love the show The Last Kingdom! Even though I know the show takes quite a bit of dramatic license with the actual history, it's still a great show! Whenever I watch a historical show or movie I always research the actual history, because there's always historical inaccuracies. But, since I'm also working on my family tree, I was thrilled to find that I'm a descendant of the real Uhtred the Bold through his daughter Ealdgyth, he's my 27th great grandfather. Thank you for the tour, I would love to visit Bamburgh someday.

I visited earlier this year. I'm no history buff so I have to admit - I had no idea how big the castle is! What I still don't get is why. Sure, it was big and impressive when it needed to be - to repel Viking invaders. But since then? OK, the Normans wanted to impress the locals, so rebuilt it in stone. But who attacked in the 15th century? The Scots? I can't think who else. If it was hit by artillery, who rebuilt it, and why? The castle is literally across the bay from Lindisfarne. I'd like to know what relevance that had to such a stronghold. Sorry - couldn't give a monkeys about some Netflix show.

A lot of Bamburgh Castle isn't medieval, ( as in it's been lost) in the In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public.
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 6 ай бұрын
That's not unusual -probably most of the great castles are heavily restored especially in the Victorian era -Arundel castle is another example and in France -most of the stunning fortifications of Carcassone are 19th century restorations.

@wendyHew
@wendyHew 3 ай бұрын
@Bob-v6h8t There is very little that actually happens in TLK, hours of talking. If you are discussing fakeness Beocca is a prime example. They seemed to just constantly find reason to go off across the country endlessly and back again. The entire story is fiction and the only real elements are the writing of the Anglo Saxon chronicle and its writer, whereas although Vikings is "Americanised" and so had over the top elements added, it follows the real stories of the anglo chronicles/Nordic sagas. Why would anyone not prefer watching the heathen army invade anglo Saxon England rather than utred talking in a field about himself and the latest of a series of quests that are all similar and resemble a poorly made fantasy pc game. Also like I said utred shits himself and that is presented as comedy, the whole thing is a bit of an insult to Bernard Cornwell's books and is more like a Patricia Cornwell book. And the main point- The last kingdom is made by the bbc!!! Why would anyone watch that bias, anti British broadcaster that has the cheek to lead people to believe they have to pay a tv licence fee to watch live TV, because the people that are caught with this nonsense are the elderly, so whilst younger people have opted out (which they intentionally have made an online process because they know older people would struggle with this) many of the elderly still pay this tax without question, whilst many struggle to keep their houses warm their money is going to pay huge salaries to people like left wing gary linker and huw Edwards, to keep their failing programs afloat like EastEnders and to fund left wing propaganda documentaries and programs and fuel misinformation. They even take part in voter suppression which is intentionally interfering in a democratic vote in order to try and undermine what the British people want.

Bernard Cornwall has written many books (he has a website), and I think I've read them all, and he has signed some for me. He does his research, and usually adds a historical note in which he says what is fact, or where he has distorted fact for the sake of the plot. He also tries to use place names accurately, as some have changed over time, although often phonetically relatable. Not a lot of documents survive from Saxon times, but there are copious records of the Peninsular War, for example. His books are better than the TV series, but the Netflix series was good, I'll admit.

Bamburgh is my favourite castle and just a short drive along the road! It dominates the surrounding land. Being the local ancient royal seat and in my opinion, better in many ways than Alnwick Castle. (Of Percy Hotspur fame.) The link with the iconic industrialist and weapon maker for the empire Lord Armstrong, seals the deal for me. It's an incredible place in summer with the best beaches in britain. Even more so in the depths of winter storms. Providing an atmospheric reminder of the regions turbulent past. Come the zombie apocalypse. I know where I'm heading with a band of intrepid warriors, armed to the teeth. "Hail the Lady Bebba and Bebbanburg."

2024: I just read all 13 volumes of the Last Kingdom in sequence. A stunning read - I was sorry when it was over. I was impressed that at the end of each volume Cornwell writes several pages placing the story and the characters in the scope of the actual events, freely showing what was fiction and what was fact. He also provides a glossary translating the ancient names of places which he uses into their current form. Eg: Lundene became London in our time.

Brilliant series. Had read all the books prior to the series being made and was always fascinated with this period of English history. So glad to see it replicated properly great job Netflix ❤

We stayed at Bamburgh last year for a week and had a view of the Castle, we had a wander inside and around the grounds, my only disappointment was there wasn't alot of History in there regarding the Viking era, one small room with artefacts was all there was, i thought there would of been a little more. The grounds and surrounding Dunes are stunning and we were lucky to have a week full of great weather. After watching the Last Kingdom it was a great feeling to actually be there, looking up at this Stunning place. But if you go, make sure to visit the other Castles in the area and of course Lindisfarne.

It certainly did, considering it was BBC, then Amazon Prime... and then Netflix and renewed for a further 3 seasons, for a total of 5.

I visited Bamburgh, it is magnificent. I walked on the beach and back up through the shrubby dunes. I also visited Holy Island, and from there you can just about see Bamburgh across the water. You mentioned 1464, presumably when Warwick, "the Kingmaker" had been sent up north to deal with the Scots and Margaret of Anjou and Henry VI who was trying to regain his throne from Edward IV. The battle of Hexham happened that year as well. I loved the series The Last Kingdom but haven't finished watching it all yet. Must do so.

The Battle of Beomfloote or Benfleet is a Real place and Battle Site too..! I know because I grew up there..! And my History teacher would Bang on about it often, given half a Chance..! But having been to Bamburgh in my youth. Its a Fabulous windswept site, well worth a Visit..!! Cheers All. Kim in Oz.😎

I got the bus from Glasgow on a £20 return day trip down to Bamburgh castle last April loved standing on the beach watching and listening to the roaring sea I know they filmed “robin the hooded man” in bamburgh in 1984 which I loved and watched on a Saturday when we left bamburgh we headed north to holy island which was peaceful and very spiritual it was the best £20 spent

3:35 When you mentioned Bebba's Burgh I immediately thought of "Borg" which means Castle or Fortress in swedish. I'm glad that we scandinavians contributed a lot to the forming of modern day Europe. England, France, Slavic countries, Russia. I recommend listening to Dan Carlin's latest podcast series about the vikings called "Twilight of the Aesir".

My little part of Newcastle was name by Danish vikings - "Byker" and "Walker" "Place by the wall" I gather. Roman Emperor Hadrians Wall it referred to which ran through both (and across to Bowness at the other coast).

He may have not have been based off a real person, but the character they made(and the actor) were absolutely amazing. One of the rare TV shows made by BBC in the last 20 years that was actually decent.
