The worst retcon in Naruto was going from the Neji vs Naruto fight which was about fighting against density to in the end Naruto is literally reincarnated destined chosen hero.
@raulzaha30965 жыл бұрын
Naruto still went against destiny though. The reincarnations of Ashura and Indra were destined to fight each other in each incarnation and to never see eye to eye. Naruto (and I guess Sasuke to some extent) is the one who broke the wheel of destiny and saved the world (with a little help from Kakashi, Sakura and the Reverse Harem Jutsu)
@raulzaha30965 жыл бұрын
@LameDoodler Sasuke decided to stop fighting by capturing all the tailed beasts, declaring war on the world and trying to kill Naruto? How's that work, fam? It was Naruto who convinced him to stop. People are confusing "will" with "destiny". Which is kind of amazing, since they're complete opposites. What you described there were Asura and Indra's "wills". As in, the things they wanted to do, but couldn't. Indra wanted to kill Asura and usurp his power (which he never could, because of their combined "destiny"). Asura wanted to end their conflict peacefully, without bloodshed (which he never could, because of their combined "destiny"). Asura and Indra's "destiny" was to forever fight each other through their descendants/reincarnations. None of the incarnations managed to acomplish their will and break the wheel of destiny. Until Naruto convinced Sasuke to cooperate with him and protect the world together. I would go even further to say that Naruto not only ended the cycle but he did it independently of Asura's will. He didn't do it peacefully. Him and Sasuke had to lose an arm for it. (He gets his arm later, but with the prosperity he and Sasuke brought to the world, I would say he's entitled to at least an arm xD)

Don't forget naruto is the literal child of prophecy
@raulzaha30965 жыл бұрын
@@kenan-b So was Nagato, but that didn't go that well, did it? Even when the toad sages said "ok, but this time we promise... for sure... Naruto is the child of prophecy" it didn't go that smooth either. Naruto (and Sasuke) fulfilled the prophecy and saved the world by sealing Kaguya (with help from Kakashi and Sakura... and Obito... yeah, I'll give an assist to Obito). Yet they still didn't break their destinies, 'cause Sasuke was about to start fighting again. The thing with prophecies is that they're just predictions. And predictions can be wrong. Nowhere in the prophecy does it say that Kakashi and Sakura (and Obito) would help.
@kenan-b5 жыл бұрын
@@raulzaha3096 but the prophecy didn't foretell that the child of prophecy would just save the world from a great evil or strong villain, that's not what the prophecy said. It said (this is paraphrasing), that the child of prophecy would bring about a great change in the ninja world and change it's trajectory drastically moving forward. This could've been for better or for worse. Also jiraiya THOUGHT that nagato was the child of prophecy, he was wrong, as he admits to himself right before he dies and proclaims naruto is the true child of prophecy, which he is. Naruto (and sasuke because of stupid shoehorned reincarnation reasons) was the ONE person that was essential win the war, he had the most influence by far and has changed the nature of the shinobi world far greater than minato or nagato could have ever dreamed of. You're right that prophecies are just "predictions" but how often in works of fictions do these predictions not come true? I'd wager to say less than 1%, given the totality of fiction that is out there, seeing as that every single story I can think of that has a prophecy in it, that prophecy becomes true.

Another retcon I don't see brought up in these comments is that the Third Hokage in part one is described as the strongest of all the hokages up to that point, but by the end of part two it's clearly seen he doesn't hold a candle to Hashirama. He went from being described as a God of Shinobi, a title Hashirama once held, to instead be The Professor because he mastered every known jutsu. At the end of part two, Hashirama is going hard with thousand armed statues versus Madara, and Hiruzen is still just throwing shuriken around. Sure, in part one you could argue Hiruzen was old and past his prime which is why we didn't see him go as hard as other hokages. But in part two, he was an edo which was the perfect opportunity to unshackle him and show why he was considered the strongest. Hell, if he really was the strongest, him versus Madara should have been an amazing fight, and yet he just takes the back seat. This does make sense though, because Hiruzen versus Madara wouldn't fit with the whole reincarnation plot. The story couldn't just be strong ninja versus other strong ninja, it had to be specific people from which the plot revolved around.

@Stephen2466665 жыл бұрын
@@togucvinw7 I mean Hiruzen and Minato being described as the best were done by characters(e.g. Iruka) and not a narrator or other omniscient source, so those statements aren't "fact" per se. Also, the Byakugan being the origin of the sharingan technically is true given that Kaguya and the otsutsuki's have the byakugan and/or rinnegan and not the sharingan. The uchiha clan origins was prob retconned a ton of times throughout the story, but the origin statement is still consistent. The most glaring retcons imo in the story are 1. the premise of jinchuurikis especially pertaining to gaara who's beast was described as an old monk before. 2. Kabuto and Minato getting PERFECT sage mode so easily which none of the sannin got despited years with their summonings 3. While I do argue that which hokage was the strongest was always ambiguous, Hashirama being SO strong makes little sense since they never even explained how he died despite his ridiculous regen powers and the only person near him in strength was dead. 4. Kakashi having unlimited chakra to spam kamui in the war, and how he became on the same team as two genin despite becoming a chunin at 6. Timeline stuff in general is shaky, especially the blood mist village stuff.

Nick Miller lmao what. No. Just no. Good writing is conflated? Wtf r u on. A war is chaotic. A good writer can convey that chaos through an understandable storytelling. The chaos can still be there. But The story has to be organized in an orderly fashion. Bad writing is disorderly plots and arcs. The arc itself can be about ANYTHING but conveying that story to the audience should be understandable. Chaotic writing isn’t good writing. Conflated writing isn’t good writing. Good writing is consistency and order while being able to tell even the most chaotic stories. And you are still conflating the two things I’m talking bout. I said STORYTELLING vs the STORY itself. A story can be about ANYTHING, chaotic war, chill summer love story, any fucking thing. But the storytelling is how that story is told and conveyed. If the writer jumbled up everything that’s the not really the story that’s messed and is all over the place. The writer probably has a complete story in his/her head. But he could be telling the story is a poor manner that loses the audience here and there. Some of the Things that can cause that are pacing, foreshadowing, going off on a tangent etc. again, the story can be chaotic but the way it’s told should be organized enough to convey that story and it’s chaos to the audience. THATS the mark of a good writer. Not conflating it and jumbling it up. That’s bad writing.

I don’t think giving backstory to the kyuubi really qualifies as a retcon. Like you could’ve gone over actual retcons which changed what the author had originally said like how Naruto had failed the genin exam 3 times but ended up the same age as the other genin and didn’t know Lee or Neji or Tenten. Also, your video didn’t have much of a focus. Your title was about retcons in Naruto but you spent a huge amount of time talking about the mythology of the story or how it’s kinda weird that they have computers in a seemingly tech-less world, neither of which were really relevant to the topic of retcons.

Most of your comment is good, but I'd say about 3 of your statements aren't really retcons. Itachi being good is more of a plot twist than a retcon. You can theorize that it wasn't originally intended as such but there is no clear contradiction between his actions in preshippuden and shippuden. Minato was never establish NOT to have sage mode, nor was it ever implied he couldn't learn it. So him having it in the war arc does come out of nowhere, but isn't a retcon. Likewise, we never had any clue of how powerful the Gate of Death ones make. All we knew from Part 1 was that it's supposed to make anyone strong enough to guaranty a kill against any enemy, but they die in return. And I'd say that what we had in the War arc was pretty accurate to this. Given that Madara didn't have his OP regenerating skills, it would've been the end. Of course Guy ended up not dying cause Kishi needs to sacrifice one of his siblings during a full moon every time he permakills a character.
@darkinferno12195 жыл бұрын
Frank22222 if Itachi was originally supposed to be good, why tf would he Tsukiyomi Sasuke TWICE? Idc what you’re “preparing him for” making him watch his parents be killed be you for 3 days straight, not just once when he was 7 but for a second time when he’s 12 is just a dick move. As for the 8 Gates it’s pretty much stated that the Gate of Death gives you power that “far exceeds the Hokage”. Given how Hiruzen and Minato were hyped up at the time as these mystical beings. Hiruzen being described as the “God Of Shinobi” and “the strongest Kage alive” when this is including Ohnoki, A, and Raza. You can get an idea of how strong 8 Gates is.

Why does so much of this video waste time on content that isn't discussing its retcons? Don't get me wrong, there's some fun trivia here, but retroactive continuity has nothing to do with, "Someone took inspiration from a source and then later had a different source of inspiration." With the example he made about the ambiguous set time to viewers interpretarion as a representative of the manga and additive retcon, debunks or justifies all the plot holes that u could ever point out to be a real thing, or bad writing in naruto. Example of ambiguous explanations for the viewers interpration: "Kaguya was an ass pull" You ca interpret that she was introduced by kimimaros back story speech before death, he was talking about the meaning of life "is there a God" Also the clan kaguya resemble the real kaguya on appearance and her bone abilities, this clan was pointed out as the most ignorant of the ninja world and for sure u can contrast that with humans, and the ignorance we all have, what kimimaro was looking for, it describes humanitys own chase to find the awnser of everything, and we know there's a theory that ancestral civilizations believe aliens where gods and that they visited us and where taken as gods, now u can take naruto as a whole and go back to that episode, and can tell that this can be a retrospective hidden refference to kaguya, since she is the awnser to all ninja world origin. Again viewers interpratation, this manga is about that, if u think is plot holes then whatever. Example 2 additive retcon "Itachi was ment to be a bad guy but later on writer change his mind" It could be a possibility. Yet like the example this guy mention about shukaku u can interpret it as a pre judgemental scenario where a story was stablished someway but after a while can be change in order to progess with the writers goal, that clearly was plot twisted narratives.

Actually Kishimoto liked Sakura and was disappointed about how much people hated her. This is from the translated summary of the interview with Kishi and Kobayashi (there's more on the subject in the summary too): ''Kishimoto says he tried to write her more realistically [than other characters], and tried to show a girl’s ‘real’ self/ feelings [through inner Sakura]. He thought she would appeal to female fans, but was surprised when she actually became hated.'' He talks about his frustration that whatever he did with her people still hated her.

@@sirperybLakeney I think most people liked how strong she got in the second part, especially when she faught Sasori. Then after Sasuke tried to kill her, she still loved him. Her "love" is completely superficial at this point. She never redeems herself after this either. She barely has any relevance in the war. She just goes on and on about how sad she is that Sasuke doesn't love her back. Until she finally gets her wish in the end. Imagine how terrible this relationship would be realistically. If Kishimoto wanted people to like her, he should've given a reason for liking her. There's plenty "realistic" female characters that are likable. Just not Sakura.

Yeah it severely lost focused and had a rather large cast of which only a few were ever used well. I think the first thing that really jumped out to me that Kishimoto had lost his focus was early on in part 2 when they introduce the elemental property idea. On it's own it's a perfectly fine concept and time tested but the way it seemed half assed thrown in came off bad. When the main cast spent years in ninja school yet seem totally oblivious to something they should have learned first week of training you can tell it was made up on the spot because combat up to that point tended to lack a lot of depth.

By the time Shippuden came around, most people were willing to accept just about anything in the Naruto universe... but Shippuden systematically shrank the world piece by piece until the amazing, seemingly limitless world was made completely irrelevant in service of two of the least interesting characters in the series. An important note for the fight between Shukaku and the ”Kyuubi” in the first part is the fact that it wasn’t the Kyuubi at all. Naruto and Gamabunta collectively used the transformation technique to transform into the nine tails (Gamabunta told Naruto to choose something with fangs or claws, and this was what his mind came up with). This explains why they don’t interact with each other, although a surprised reaction from Shukaku would still have been fitting.

@@MrRyukami It's a huge mess when one looks at things in a purely coherent manner. Event the lore changes from the first series, to the next. But the entire narrative is supposed to be about self-deternination, but because of all the additional crap Kishimoto was forced to make after the pain arc ended, naruto and sasuke became reincarnations driven by destiny. Naruto's biggest message was thrown aside. Also it still makes no sense why itachi was written to be good when he helped the akatsuki (obito) basically screw the world. Naruto's power makes zero since when you acknowledge that he only has half the nine tails. That reason definitely written in at the last minute. The power difference between many adult characters in the original series and in shipuuden makes no sense, especially in kakashi's case. Also, the massive difference between the lore Hashirama had in the original series, and the massive increase in his feats in shipuuden was also a huge plot hole. Naruto isn't trash, but it does suffer from being a shonen and that means constant increases in power, even when it doesn't make sense necessarily
@jairomelchor80245 жыл бұрын
@@MegaShinobi2011 That's because no writer is capable of writing story for two series with hundreds of episodes. You can't just expect things to be the same, how else are you supposed to put more story into a product without changing stuff? The lore in Naruto was obviously pretty over the top because Kishimoto didn't had any plans to make powerful enemies. Even in that part things changed, like for example ninjas were required to use very long signs to even make a powerful jutsu (and chant it too) like in the Zabuza arc. Kishimoto just created a layout for his product, he put some detailed stuff to make his first episodes very coherent but he wanted to go big. That's why you don't see ninjas chanting hand sign names, taking like forever to make a jutsu, or people like Kakashi acting like running in water is an ability that requires great skills, or that a jounin is literally a killing machine (when most jonin are barely different than chunins). The same for the ANBU's. You need to face the harsh truth that people aren't able to map out DECADES of story. The story unfolds and creates new layers as it goes. Please, Hashirama didn't even had any real lore in Part 1. He was literally called the God of Ninjas and that's it, it doesn't mean anything and it points out to the audience that the writer wanted that character to be powerful but didn't had the time to flesh out his past, just powerful for the sake of being powerful.
@danielquinlan24575 жыл бұрын
10:52 You got some of that backwards. In regards to Yin and Ying, Yin represents negativity and darkness, whereas Yang represents positivity and light. So, Minato actually sealed the Kyuubi's lighter half in Naruto and the darker half in himself. The _real_ reason why the Kyuubi was such an asshole is because he spent centuries, if not millenia absorbing all of the fear, hatred, and general negativity that humanity directed at him, same as the other Tailed Beasts. Narratively, the way humanity shaped the Bijuu into evil, destructive monsters with their negative emotions is meant to mirror how the ninja villages treat their Jinchuriki, and how that treatment can drive a person nuts. Just look at Gaara. Because of the circumstances of his birth, Gaara was feared and despised, and therefore socially isolated from the rest of the village. That treatment caused him to grow into a psychopathic monster, just want everyone thought he'd be from the start. The same applies to the Bijuu, just on a much larger scale.

@MrGeorgeFlorcus5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would describe Naruto's retcons as a "slow burn". Much like how the Centralia Mine Fire- essentially the world's longest lasting dumpster fire- is also a "slow burn". The problem I have with this analysis is that is purports that there is some sort of formula for how major a retcon is versus how long you should spend working on it, and that if you are planning on issuing a retcon that fundamentally changes a character, lore, or the overall story of the series, that it's okay, as long as you spend a really, REALLY long time working on it and do it really carefully. In reality, that simply is not true. There are; SHOULD; be a set few unbreakable rules and premises within your story which established the basic identity, purpose, and message of the story you are writing. If you later on decide you no longer like that message, and that you would prefer to write a completely different story, regardless of its incongruence with the former part of your same-named story, then I don't think it should matter how long you spend rewriting your backstory. If you decided that you were going to destroy your entire house, brick by brick, until it was nothing but rubble, over the next 10 years of your life, the fact that you took a long time doing it doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day, your house has been destroyed.
@Zelink1085 жыл бұрын
Are you sure any of those were retcons?
@lightningkid60284 жыл бұрын
Idk your analogy goes the opposite way too. If you slowly start tearing down parts of your house, then replace those parts with new rooms or design changes then the house would not be destroyed but it would be renovated. It would be different, but not completely demolished. However, while tearing down the house certain things cannot change, like you can’t knock down load bearing walls because then everything would be knocked over. Just like there are certain things in a story that shouldn’t change or the entire story fails

Only the anime depicted him transforming into the real Kyuubi. Furthermore, the Kyuubi isn't evil because he's the Yang half. Both halves are the same in every way. @LameDoodler You'd be surprised how many great writers had no idea were to go at one point. That's the difference between story and plot. As long as you love your characters, the story will tell itself, and the plot is secondary to story. Character development is not linear.
@cobbsta885 жыл бұрын
@LameDoodler A good plot with a shit story? That's merely a beginning, middle and end, and it's not worth watching without a good story. The plot is just a sequence of events, without compelling characters, the plot can be summoned in one page in a monotone voice. The response to a terrible story teller in day to day life is typically "cool story bro", anyone can recite a sequence of events in a perfect linear fashion with all relevant details. Story comes down to the lense though which the plot unfolds, and the character arc. The underdog plot device goes back to the dawn of time, the trope is very tired, yet millions of people still love this story. It's fair enough you're not interested, I'm not arrogant enough to tell you you're wrong about your own interests. And if people are hooked on the story, you're criticisms won't change the fact that the story found an audience. As the plot is all over the place, the worldwide success can only be attributed to the story. You also need to take into account that Naruto is an adaptation of Kishimoto's manga, many of the problems are a result of too many cooks in the kitchen.
@cobbsta885 жыл бұрын
@LameDoodler The character and character development is the story, character development is not plot. If the spectacle sold, the DCEU and Transformers would be just as successful. Not every MCU movie was received well, easy to tell which directors know what they're doing. Feel free to speculate which ones I enjoyed, spoiler alert, it wasn't most of them. Cinema is particularly difficult to execute compared to animation and literature in terms of story. You make a book you make it once, but you make a movie 3 times. First the writer makes it, then the director makes it, than the editor makes it. Switch any 3, you'll get a different movie. Have you ever read a screenplay? You'd be amazed at how little is on page, it's the director, actors, cinematographer and editor that give it life. Most DBZ fans agree it peaked at the cell saga and went downhill. Begrudging something for having an audience is petty. Star Wars, yes even the old ones, have a very simple plot (as if GL could handle more than that). It's the character arc that drove the original trilogy, it's exactly what the prequels lacked, and the audience knew the difference. It's not the box office that tells success, it's how the movie ages, and those effects have not aged well.
