How Robbie Ryan shot Marriage Story

Marriage Story has some of the most beautifully raw cinematography of any recent film, and it's all thanks to cinematographer Robbie Ryan. But Noah Baumbach also seems to be the brain behind this look, as going back almost 20 years, we can see an extremely similar one...
So in today's video, I'm going to be looking at how Robbie Ryan went about shooting Marriage Story, by looking at the equipment he used, the lighting style he went after, his use of movement and composition, as well as the overall look, and how it compares to other Baumbach pictures.

I was lucky enough to work with Robbie Ryan on a music video I danced in a few months ago. He was super professional but was up for suggestions from us dancers too. I suggested we try something with a prop we had and he treated my suggestion seriously. I respect that, defiantly made for a fun set to be on.

I think that those three films are more visually distinct from one another than you. The compositions and blocking of Marriage Story are far more arresting and choreographed than the uniform casual medium shot approach of The Meyerowitz Stories. The camera in The Squid and the Whale as I recall it has a quality of hyper-alertness, scenes sometimes finishing with whip pans away from the main character, and some other very attention-grabbing strategies to remind you that this book-talky drama is a work of cinema.
