Despite expectations being low, Manchester United shocked Liverpool at Anfield this weekend. But as much as the 2-2 result will have raised eyebrows, it was actually the committed and effective performance of the team that really caught the eye. Adam Clery looks at how Ruben Amorim got so much out of his players after weeks of disappointing displays.

Ugarte is massively underrated by most people and football announcers. He’s really settled in lately and has had a bunch of games in a row where he has really shown his true skill and ability and he has even shocked me in a few ways! I knew he’d be great for us, but not in some of the ways he’s showing. They all hyped him up as this defensive only midfield destroyer and yet, his passing ability and ability to hold the ball under pressure is outstanding! As well as his offensive ability near the edge of the box on occasion. Not saying he’s a goal scoring MF, but he has shown his ball control and intelligence many times around the edge of the box and transitioning from the back third to the forward third many times. He’s so composed on the ball and actually looks like one of the better players on the ball in the entire Utd team most of the time. I can’t even count now how many times I’ve seen him under pressure and just effortlessly spin and move away from pressure with ease and progress the ball to the next line of players. Mainoo is the one that gets all the hype for being that type of player and yet he’s looked pedestrian most of this season and looses the ball often! Makes horrible lazy passes often that have either directly resulted in goals or offensive chances. And to be real honest, Kobbie doesn't put in a 100% effort defensively very often. He looks lazy a lot of the time. Then other times, he'll come out of nowhere and make some manic run to catch a player from behind and put in a good tackle or body a guy off the ball. He really needs to work on his consistency, endurance and mental attitude. He has all the tools and ability to be one of the best MF's in the EPL (which would also mean, in the world), but he has a few things he really needs to improve on if he thinks he's going to be one of the best. This season does not look like he is growing and turning into a top midfielder this year. Plus it’s VERY worrying how out of shape he is for such a young guy. He can barely make it through 90 mins most games and looks SO heavy and tired by the 65-75 min or even prior to halftime some games!. Granted, it’s a dumpster fire of a team and year already, so we have to cut all the players a tiny bit of slack for that. Plus he's still young. So maybe he just needs more time to become a man and a professional. Lets hope that's it. But man, Ugarte has truly been this year’s best signing by a wide margin! He’s had the same sort of impact on the team as Martinez did when he came in. Absolutely fantastic player, such a great motor, never seems to be tired, smart, gritty and just a great all around footballer. You need players like Ugarte in your team if you want to be the best. He’ll be a very important player for Utd as they try and rebuild into one of the best teams again.

@@jollygreen68 Exactly mate, "destroyer midfielder", "likes to tackle" stuff, etc. But what everyone missed is how composed he is on the ball, under pressure. On numerous occasions you could see him hold up the ball, take his time, and find a pass, all while being closed down and under pressure from opposition players. He was my MOTM, even though there were some errors he made in that game. But he's young, and he can still improve massively, which should excite any Man United fan, because he's got potential to be a really really good midfielder.

I'm so glad to see somebody finally point out and analyse that pass from Ugarte at the end. At the time I was astonished by it and subsequently astonished that nobody, from Sky to MOTD, Stretford Park etc covered it, all instead falling for the notion that Liverpool had an off day when it was so obvious to even my untrained eye that United's tactics and work rate had stopped them playing. Robertson has gone under the radar this season in his drop-off and again in this fixture, so was glad Adam brought it up briefly. Several goals and the unjust red he received are a sign he has either lost a yard or he hasn't recovered from the Euros . Liverpool aren't just losing the 3 out of contract, but Robertson a brilliant lb is past his peak. Alison might be past his peak too. Really difficut transition ahead for Liverpool.

It goes to show that amorim was right when he started, The club does have the players for this system but i think the issue is working on the players hearts and getting them to fight like they did against liverpool in every game going forwards. I think the additional training helped though if anything not becuase of the training itself but the ability to work with amorim more and to help boost their confidence. If united can stick to the system, play with confidence and play as a team, they would be absolutely unstoppable. But lets get this season over see how much they improve with training through the off season and how they start later this year for the new season. Im confident we will look aggressive next season.
@jollygreen68
@jollygreen68 Ай бұрын
I agree and disagree with you. I do think there are SOME players on this team, that aren't performing consistently right now, that can and will change and get better and become great in this system. No doubt! But I also know a lot of players in this squad WILL NOT be on this team in 1-3 years because they can't or won't change. Like you said, it's vitally important for Amorim to have more training time with the entire squad and it's going to take 1-2 years of LOTS of training to get the team where it needs to be. One off season won't be enough. A lot of these players are SO ingrained into playing a certain way and the 3-4-3 is quite a bit different for some of the positions. And it will take 1-2 seasons for those players to really get the hang of it and probably another 1-2 years to then become creative and experts in that system and know how to make that position even better. I think Utd missing out on any European football next year would be a HUGE help to the entire team. ONLY having to worry about their EPL opponent each week and having TONS more time to rest and train will do them wonders (other than Carabao and FA Cup) and give Amorim enough time to really drill the ideas and system into these guys. But ultimately, I think a lot of these guys will be gone in 2-3 years. My list of guys that could potentially or will be in the squad still in 2-3 years are: Mazraoui, de Ligt, Martinez, Yoro and Dalot on defense. With de Ligt the maybe. Not sure if he will stay or not long term. I love his attitude and his warrior mentality. Just hope he can find his groove again and become the great CB we all want and need him to be. He has the skills and the intelligence. I also don't see Mazraoui being a starting WB for Amorim past this year or next. He doesn't have the pace or offensive skill to be a true WB. But, he can fill in if the starter is injured, can play RCB and can even play some MF. The guys DEFINITELY a footballer and a great utility player with a great attitude to have on your team! Fernandes, Ugarte and Mainoo are the only ones in the MF that have a chance of staying and even that is pushing it. Ugarte is the ONLY MF I can confidently say will be on this team in 2-3 years. I can see Fernandes being past his prime in 1-3 years (and needing a full time replacement sooner than later). And I could see Mainoo possibly being sold this summer or in 1-2 seasons. He's still up in the air on whether or not he's going to turn into the guy we need and want. He is showing some signs here and there that he "could" become a great player, but just as often is lazy, makes horrible passes too often that result in goals or chances and doesn't have the legs or aggressiveness for Amorim's team as of right now. He's young and that could all change in the next 1-2 seasons. It'll be a make or break period for him over the next 1-2 seasons for sure. And I could see INEOS being ruthless and selling him for a ton of money to the right team if he doesn't improve quite a bit in the next 1-2 years. They aren't messing around. If you can't do what the coach wants, they aren't going to keep you anymore! Especially if you make a lot of money. Barreda is NOT going to be handing out crazy contracts to anyone anymore. And there are some rumors going around that Mainoo is asking for 200k or more a week?! Which hopefully are just that... rumors. But if they are true, then he WILL be sold for as much money as they can get for him and bring in a player that WILL do what Amorim and the INEOS team want for a reasonable fee and salary and move on from Kobbie. NOBODY is untouchable or above the team in this new system. It's nothing personal, INEOS are just done with the inefficient horrific way of running the team that the Glazers have been doing for FAR TOO long. And are going to make wholesale changes whether anyone likes it or not, in the name of efficiency and to better the team. So that they CAN go out and get the players they need when they need them. Sell extra Carrington players to other teams for good prices (like sh*ty has been doing for years), instead of having to sell off INSANELY overpriced has been's for pennies on the dollar! Or pence on the pounds, haha. And then Hojlund, Amad and maybe Garnacho are the only FW's I can see being around in 2-3 years. And Garnacho is just like Mainoo, a BIG maybe. No questions about does the kid have talent and speed. That's not the issue. The issue is, can he work hard enough and run enough for an Amorim team? Can he and will he play defense like a pitbull like Amorim demands? Can he and will he change his style of play to become what Amorim needs? Can he and will he change his attitude to what Amorim needs and demands? If he can't, they'll sell him for a big fee and buy someone who WILL and CAN do those things that is much better. It's that simple. This summer, the team realistically NEEDS 1-2 incredibly fast offensive minded, hard working WB's. Mendes and Quenda would be a dream! But even if they can't get both, players like that are an absolute MUST for Amorim's system to work. Preferably on the left side as Dalot does have a chance to turn into a great WB for Amorim. He's a great FB already, has the pace, but he'll need to work on his positioning and offensive abilities if he's going to lock down a starting WB position on the right for Amorim. Otherwise, he'll just be a squad player or sold. And if we could get Quenda as well!!!! OMG, haha. That would be an absolute dream! Two of the fastest wide players in the world would instantly make this team a nightmare to play against. They also absolutely NEED 1 CF that is already really good and can not only score, but create on their own and will run like a maniac all game. Whether that's Gyokeres or Kolo Muani or someone like that is irrelevant. They HAVE to get in a player that can score and help create chances. I'm 95% sure Hojlund can and will become at the very least a very good CF. If not world class. But he is a guy that needs service and balls played into him in good spots. Or very good no 10's to play along with him to create fast give and goes, 1-2's, and overloads that can free him up (getting in 1-2 really good no 10's isn't a must this summer, but for sure in the next 1-3 years it IS). He has that ice cold killer instinct to attack balls in the box to score loads of goals, but he doesn't seem to be able to create as many chances on his own like a Gyokeres, Koko Muani, Diaz, etc. Plus he's still too young and hasn't had enough time to develop. He shouldn't be forced into being the only CF and should have a slightly older better partner to learn from and rotate with. And to be honest, hasn't had much or any good consistent service or great players around him to elevate his game to help him create good scoring chances. They NEED a guy that can do a lot on his own and MAKE things happen until Hojlund has had more time to develop and become the amazing striker we all know he will be. Even if they can only afford an older guy that only has 1-2 good years left, they NEED to get another CF. And lastly, they NEED 1-2 really good MF's this summer. They will 100% be losing Casimiro and Eriksen now or this summer. And other than Mainoo, Ugarte and Fernandes, they have NO starters. They are SOOOO thin in MF, it's ridiculous! Mount is a bust and the other guys are too young and not good enough (at least not yet. Maybe in the future). They HAVE to get in 1-2 proven MF's that can run, battle, have a little bit of an edge to them and are gritty and tough to play against. Make playing through the MF horrible for the opposition. And can pass and progress the ball efficiently. They don't need any wizards or anything. Mainoo can be that guy. But they NEED 1-2 MF's like this. No questions. If they don't get that, they can't succeed. If they can get that done this summer (3-5 starters), then they will be well on their way to finally righting this ship and starting the challenge to push past this mediocrity and back to being one of the better teams in the EPL and the world. With some of the good players they already have, some great new additions over the next 2-3 years and a lot more training time, this team can be back at the top in 3-4 years and at least challenging for the top four in 1-2. But it's a MASSIVE project and I just don't think a lot of Utd fans realize HOW BAD it really is and HOW FAR away they are from consistently winning most of the time again. Some extra training isn't going to fix this MASSIVE problem they have. Every time they win a game against a good team or get a draw, all the Utd fans say the same things and act like they're ready for that next step and ready to win all the time. They're not. But I definitely believe that Amorim is a generational talent as a coach and if given the time WILL lead Utd back to the top. No doubt in my mind!

I’m so glad you (yes, Adam, you like to do that and that’s why I have a subscription for this channel) pointed out how much work Mainoo and especially Ugarte managed to do. There is an ongoing thought experiment on social media with variable degree of seriousness - what would’ve happened if Amorim got the Liverpool job and Slot got the United job, usually focused on the 3-4-2-1 Amorim likes and how it doesn’t suit Liverpool’s players. Amorim did a Slot to Liverpool. He managed to do stuff with a midfield 2 (and a back 3 and Bruno and Amad, it’s a whole system rather than just a formation) that Slot does with 3. Because Slot used 3 players to beat box midfields left and right. They’re both all about energy and intensity, formations are formations.

A traditional 433 with Elliot at right might've done the job. The reason why utd look threatening was their fullbacks didn't have no threat to deal with, slot being passive with the press and not having wing overloads to pin their fullbacks down was where slot got it wrong. The way Salah Trent Elliot worked under klopp especially Vs 5 backs is something slot should take note on. I think slot thought utd might come here not to loose like every single time they've been here. So slot was worried if they might pull of a Nottingham with low block and counter. He was massively wrong and by the time he tried to change things utd grew in confidence and got their stride. Slot should be more brave at times like these or it will be matches like these that might derail Liverpool season. Slot need to understand that his team if fully capable of suffocating opponents and are used to that. It's time that he put more faith and go full throttle when he needs to

I think a really good sign for United now is they are gradually beginning to gain the passionate, fighting, leadership qualities that they have lacked so badly in recent years. They are now regularly going to historically terrifying grounds like Anfield, showing up, giving these teams that are better than them a real game, and getting results. They are slowly starting to move away from the narrative of being weak, crumbling under pressure and losing games by 5-0 scorelines, and are, in the simplest and bluntest sense, playing like men instead of schoolboys, professionals instead of amateurs. This mindset and mentality change Amorim is building is the most impressive thing about this new United side to me.

I've been saying this for ages but where has this kind of game analysis been before Adam came on the scene? I don't agree with everything he says, but by God he sees far more of the intent of the managers than I do. Match of the Day should be renamed "Goal mouth action of the Day" for it's complete superficial and breathtakingly simplistic game analysis.

None of Manchester United’s goals were typical counter-attacking strikes that might indicate a low-block approach. Instead, they stemmed from a high press that forced errors from Liverpool’s back line. It seems Slot is using deflection tactics, aimed at framing his team’s home performance as being undone by a low block rather than being outplayed. By the way, this was Amorim’s first time with a full week of training sessions, so he certainly deserves at least a summer transfer window and a proper pre-season to implement his ideas. The same applies to Slot, who can’t fairly be judged on this season. After all, he essentially inherited a team built by Klopp, much like Di Matteo benefited from Mourinho’s squad for one final flourish before it was disbanded. Liverpool, meanwhile, face a significant challenge in replacing three key players: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah. Liverpool fans should enjoy this season, but instead of seeing it as the start of a new era, they might consider it the end of one. Replacing players of that calibre will be a monumental task, especially since Liverpool are unlikely to receive any transfer fees for them.

@Eat-MyGoal I assume you are either a Liverpool fan from the Far East, possibly the South Asian subcontinent (as your grasp of English suggests it may not be your first language), or you deliberately misrepresented my point about Manchester United’s control of the game being mutually exclusive to a low block as a childish attempt to gain an upper hand in this debate-or perhaps you’re simply not very intelligent. In fact, based on your arguments, I’d describe you as possessing all these traits simultaneously. For the record, my only claim was that Manchester United’s goals did not result from a low-block counterattack. They were the result of a high press that forced Liverpool into mistakes. A low block, by definition, relies on fast transitions from defence to attack, which was not the case here. I also find it ironic that you’re commenting on a video that echoes the very points I made, further demonstrating your inability to grasp the argument-a fitting addition to your personal “Venn diagram” of characteristics.

This is not tactics but players stepping up. They did that in 2 games City and Liverpool because the players knew the world was expecting them to get destroyed and even United fans thought that. The best thing to come out of this performance is the fact that now we know what these players are capable of. Now every time they are shit we can can all point at them and say 'why didn't you play like you did against Liverpool ya spanners?!' Also, it kind of shows us fans that Amorim's tactics actually work and that despite being pretty shit for as long as I can remember, this squad can actually take on information and execute a game plan. Which is nice.

He forgets that the Maguire chance would have been ruled out for offside and Liverpool dominated the chances such as Van Dijk and Jota. The xG was 2.87 to 0.99 - that was a bigger xG gap than when Liverpool won 3-0 at Old Trafford. It's strange to think Liverpool had a 3-0 win and a 2-2 draw with Man Utd and Liverpool fans are disappointed with that while Man Utd fans are delighted.

I think you left out a very very important parameter. This game was the first one where we didn't play slot ball. The main difference to Klopp is the lowering of tempo when you attack or regain via pressing on the opposing side of the pitch, and then everyone gets into position and plays passes to wear down the defense. This wears down the opposing team mentally AND covers up defensive problems (Trent for instance needed to track back from positions further up the pitch than he normally would, or he would have coverage from others). This was NON existent this match. It was a high tempo Klopp chaos match, which is not what Liverpool should be playing now.

@@CoconutJewce I think it was a combination of everything tbh. The Anfield anticipation expecting the Man U we had see up till now, conceding first, the fact that that was the first time this season that as this video says the Man U players performed at their expected level of physicality and tactical acumen, multiple players on our side being bad, the slick surface which sped the game up considerably. It was kind of a perfect storm, and maybe at 2-1 Slot maybe should have gone for Endo and slowing down the game. Personally I think it was a blip, I have huge respect for Slot and the current squad.
