I remember a CD so well protected that it made it so that my CD player never played a CD again. Brilliant.

SACD protection hasn't been useful for 15 years, it's incredibly easy to defeat. Those albums always showed up on Usenet within a few hours of physical copies being available.

You mentioned that when you buy an Octave Records SACD you also get a data disc. That might have been true when this video was made but it's not true now - or at least the recent Octave Records' discs I've bought have been just that.

To be fair to Sony, America has consistently had Sony in its crosshairs for a number of its innovations, starting with video tape and home recording in the 70s and then digital audio: DAT and Minidisc via lawsuits from the Recording Industry Association of America in the 80s and 90s. The compromise was to introduce copyright protection. So it's hardly surprising then that they were probably forced to do the same thing with SACD knowing that if they didn't they would be in court once again. What stops you from being prosecuted for the same reasons if you are supplying unprotected copyrighted material? (Genuinely interested to know) 🙂

Just wondering: are the drivers in that tower of bass speakers behind Paul connected in series or parallel? If the latter, is the impedance of each speaker much higher such that the overall impedance is 4-8 ohms? Does the same apply to the mid and high range speakers?
@FOH36632 жыл бұрын
Neither series or parallel... It's my understanding each driver is coupled to it's own dedicated amplifier, 1kw per driver. The original was all paralleled, with a wicked demanding load, and a purpose built robust amplifier. Paul's IRS bass towers aren't stock at all. New drivers and amps. New Dayton 12" drivers, and they designed their own multi-amp system.

As streaming represents around 85% of all music consumption now and that percentage is getting closer to 100%, the studios are becoming less concerned about allowing master quality as few people will spend the extra time to mess around with illegal copies. The FLAC lossless streaming now available up to 192kHz PCM (e.g. Amazon Music HD) is raw unencrypted to the DAC and it wouldn't be complicated to record it but why bother?
@TheDanEdwards2 жыл бұрын
"but why bother?" - because one is traveling, or living somewhere there is no reliable high speed internet?
@ThinkingBetter2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanEdwards Yes, partly true, I have some playlists downloaded on my iPhone for travel purpose but those are downloaded from the music streaming app itself easily for offline listening. But of course agree, those who are not able to get a good internet connection will need to have the music locally. At least in the developed part of the world, I believe near 100% of households can get a solid internet connection nowadays. The internet connection to homes has replaced phone and cable TV connections almost everywhere. Nowadays I get 1Gbps to my house with a fiber optic cable and music streaming in master quality (DSD or PCM equivalent) is not even 1% of the available bandwidth.

Vinyl and CD sales have been climbing not going backwards at this point.
@ThinkingBetter2 жыл бұрын
@@scottyo64 True, it's an interesting trend. Streaming is however also increasing. Combined these trends confirm what I said, people are more loyal than ever to pay for music. People made cassette copies until MP3 downloads became a thing starting with Napster; and nowadays people listen to either streaming (everywhere) or the real discs (at home). I used to know many people collecting music on their hard drives, but nowadays it seems to be mostly a thing of the past. Perhaps it's a bit like this, if you seek convenience, streaming wins, and if you seek collectibility, vinyl and CDs win.

It has to be Sony encrypted for a SACD player to recognise and play it. The DVD will be a data disk, nothing to do with DVD audio.
@gmak80522 жыл бұрын
sony only cares about encrypting their music to protect the copyrighted music and none of the sony library was and probably still is not released on dvd audio under the sony music publishing.When this started dvd audio was a competitor to sacd .
@InsideOfMyOwnMind2 жыл бұрын
@@paulstubbs7678 So as I understand it then, the DSD data itself is not encrypted but the key has to be there to activate the DAC's DSD capability.

Encrypting widely distributed content media is futile. Two examples. Both the Red Book CD back in the early 80's and DVD's in the 90's had password Encrypting. Within 2-weeks of releasing the first CD's the coding was cracked and widely available. Sony's Encrypting of DVD was so good that some of it's own DVD players couldn't play them. But within weeks the coding was cracked and the rest is history. I'll let Paul's comments on DSD alone. The one media that has not been cracked is the Digital Cinema ( early 2000's release ) distribution hard drives. Digital Cinema replaced the reels of 35mm film for the distribution of movies in theaters. It lives today and as far as I know has not been cracked. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_cinema "Digital cinema refers to adoption of digital technology within the film industry to distribute or project motion pictures as opposed to the historical use of reels of motion picture film, such as 35 mm film". Virtually all movie theaters today use a Digital Cinema media server. The distribution of the drives is the same way reels of 35mm film were distributed. UPS.

@4:40 "At Octave, when you buy one of our SACDs, you also get a DVD data disk that actually does have the unencrypted, unprotected file..." Paul, you left off the noun between "unprotected" and "file". Are you saying that that DVD data disk's file is an "unprotected DSD file"? That unprotected file is of what format? I think that you mean DSD. But I would rather not assume. Assuming is how things go wrong and misinformation spreads. Thank you.

@@BB.......... What Paul said @4:39 is ambiguous. He said that when you buy one of his SACDs, you "also get" a DVD data disk. He did not state that that additional disk contains DSD data. It is common for people to state things where the listener connects dots, and that is how the listener gets burned. Perhaps those dots are what is being suggested. But that is not the same as plainly stating that the DVD disk contains DSD data. Why, if when you buy one of his SACDs would he give you another disk -- a DVD disk? The SACD disk has DSD on it. So why the additional DVD disk? If the DVD disk also has DSD on it, then why the SACD disk? Why have two disks? Why have one with encryption and one without encryption, that both contain DSD data? Paul never said that the DVD disk has DSD data on it. He said only that the DVD disk does not have encryption. Until he states that the DVD disk also contains DSD data, I will not conclude that the DVD disk had DSD data.
