When we talk about things being traded across empires and bringing merchants to faraway lands, we usually think of resources like gold or silver or diamonds, but what about salt?

I recently read about the annilation of the Muisca population. 😔😔😔 they were rich with salt and traded for gold. But the Spaniards were convinced they were a city of gold.

I strongly disagree that salt was nvr more valuable than gold. Gold hasnt had an inherent value to humans for nearly as long as salt has. Salt was more valuable than gold for the vast majority of human history. Its just unrecorded history so we tend to gloss over it, but even before we came down from trees we still valued salt; all animals without metalsmithing tech value salt to a far grter degree than they wud value useless hunks of yellowish rock. And there was very much a point where humans started to build societies before valuing gold; and in those societies they wud have needed salt all the same for preservation and such even tho they hadnt yet come to value gold.
