I always heard that the main reason. Is so you can get nitrogen mixed diving gas. Otherwise, if you compress your own tank; their is a nitrogen narcosis depth limit. So certified divers can go deeper.

Well getting nitrox certified is entirely different than just an open water certification. You have to have one before you can have the other

Nitrox doesn’t allow you to go deeper. In fact it makes it so you have to shallower. It just allows you to stay under the water longer. Trimix allows you to go deeper.
