this is not funny, but at the same time, I'm not sure how i feel about these videos. what we really should be doing (especially what police should be doing) is telling business owners and non-cyclists that they should let bicyclists bring their children INDOORS with them! bicycles should not be left unattended and its infuriating when store employees tell me to 'leave it outside'. they just have no clue, so education is key.

The number one problem in bike theft is not an inadequate lock but an inadequate legal system that favor the thief and deters the public from getting involved . Most people will walk right by a thief using a loud angle grinder because they are afraid of being attacked or a law suit by the perp. place bicycle theft in the same category as car theft and you will see the police getting involved and alter the laws so that if the owner of the bike or a member of the public intervenes , they cannot be sued by the thief no matter how severe their injuries form the beating that they deserve.

On the subject of being challenged: a couple of years ago some twit accidentally locked my bike, along with his, to a stand. I went home by bus, gave it a couple of hours and then came back with a few hand tools to remove his lock (a cheap chain and padlock which I could see wasn't going to put up much of a fight). It took me I suppose 5 or 10 minutes, during which time plenty of people walked past - this was in central London, very near Wellington Barracks in Westminster. A couple of people gave me a slightly funny look but no one said anything. The more blatant you are, the less likely to get challenged. The irony was that the twit responsible turned up just as I was about to impart the final hacksaw stroke. He was suitably mortified and we parted with a laugh.

Bike thieves trade on the fact that most people will not report the theft in progress, let alone intervene. That's down to fear, anomie, diffusion of responsibility, and urban callousness.

Time would only matter for each lock if you replaced the cutting wheel for each lock. Being homeless for 5+ years I can confirm that people that are stealing bikes do carry big cutters around a lot more than you would think and the grinder less often. It's harder for them to hang on to over time because they get desperate and will trade it off. They only cost $20 at harbor freight though. Another thing is one of each type of lock helps. The cable ones need a cable cutter to do it fast. The bolt cutters have a really hard time with those. I use a thick, combo cable (the combo can be figured out in less than a minute if the #/ letter wheels are loose side to side AT ALL) that is made from a better brand. Make sure the wheels are tight. Also: Remove your light when you leave your bike!

this is the most realistic bike lock test ive seen. most have experts masterfully picking the locks. bike thieves use brute force. ive had to cut ulocks in public with hack saws twice because ive lost the key. im muscular and gruff looking. the first time, nobody said anything. second time a fellow jokingly as if i lost my key. i said yes and he walked away. i think people should at least take a picture or ask to see ID if there is a later reporting of a theft.

@cbernier3
@cbernier3 8 жыл бұрын
Can you? Think about it. If your bike was covered in unremovable hey look this bike was stolen paint, you wouldn't want it back. So the theif sets off the dye pack. Then what? If it's a cheap bike, they just leave it there, and you have to buy a new bike anyway. If the bike is expensive enough, they pay to have it fixed and it essentially becomes a new bike and no longer identifiable to you. You won't get it back. If you do get it back all messed up, what's the repair cost? $600? I have no idea. What's the deductible on your insurance? This only helps people with bikes whose depreciated value is still more than the repair costs, and people with bikes like that don't leave them out much,
@cbernier3
@cbernier3 8 жыл бұрын
Very few people would actually buy this, especially in the beginning. Therefore thieves won't really know about it. It can't deter them, because they won't know it's a dye lock, because they've never seen one before. Plus whose gonna pay for the collateral damage? You dirty up a bunch of private and public property in the process. Your idea isn't practical. The research, the liabilities, the acceptance needed. The price would end up way too high, the demand too low. Such a thing would likely not be legal in many place. Your idea isn't going to get off the ground. Who would want to angel invest in such a thing?

I rather doubt there is a seamless system for collecting and reviewing the camera footage. Easy to imagine an hour plus to request and obtain each video used in tracking the thief. Perhaps as AI develops, a better system for accessing and reviewing camera feeds will also improve and handle all the tracking without man hours spent on it. I've heard China has some pretty good tech going for tracking people... There were stories about it being used to catch Covid quarantine breakers. More than just cameras could be used though. You can bet most thieves are going to have cellphones with them. Cellphone company and other providers like google that have location tracking services on the phones can probably identify everyone in the area and their moves before and after any specific events. if they aren't doing it already, the data is available for one of those futuristic automated contact tracing systems. Track the thieves to the shops / buyers they work with and follow the flow back out to all the other thieves and map the whole network of people involved. Google already does that with targeted advertisements. You'll get ads based on the people you associate with.

Was going to make a similar comment , the reality is most bike locking places use cheap shitty china special steal that is as strong as play doe and as i have seen you are more likely to see the cheap shitty steal locking stations cut than the actual bike lock its self, like a friend they had the bike nicked and the scumbag gut through the lock rail in under 30 seconds with a hand hack saw and then stole the bike and the lock, it really is evidence to the fact that we really need lethal locks, before i get people shouting at me, there really is a reason why places with the death penalty for thefts have the lowest theft crime rate on the planet....

Known ways how to effectively secure your bike from all thieves: - Buy a second bike, give it to an armed security guard you employ. Let him follow you and guard your bike. - If you're short on money, have an huge attack dog chained next to it, at all times. - Don't use your bike. Ever. Just walk. - Keep it in the vault of a bank. - Coat your bike in fast-acting poison. - Become a thief and steal bikes from others. - Lit your bike on fire. - Buy the Emperors new Bike. Just pretend that you have a bike. Try to mimic bike motions when you ride it. - Move to a place without thieves, like antarctica. - Use a bike made of pure lead. If it's to heavy to ride, it's to heavy to steal. - Weld your bike onto heavy objects. Most thieves carry only grinders, not a welder. - Get a thief, ride the thief. Bikes don't steal thieves. - Become a gangster. Learn the way of the street. Take over crime organisations. Avange your stolen bike, by sending assasins. - Join military. Go to war. Return home. Join the police. Quit job. Avange your stolen bike, by becoming bitter war veteran. - Go to Japan. Join ninja village. Learn the ways of the ninja. Return home. Avange stolen bike, by becoming assasin. - Turn in to Transformer. Transform into bike when you need it. Turn back to human when you don't. If you follow those steps, you should be safe.

The conclusion is that it's pointless trying to protect your property as carrying enough locks to only deter someone for less than a minute is unwieldy for this mode of transport. This means we need the police to be more of a deterrent and sentences to be more significant. I love how the police recommend getting a decent lock but really just get it marked in case we happen to find it in the future - good work there. Marking is pointless, I've literally never heard of anyone getting their bike back and generally the police file reports like a spam email.

I bought a fat tyre bike 2 and a 1/2 years ago to ride with my boys to the beach which is only 400m away. First bike I had bought for about 40 years. All my other bikes had come off the road verge. I had the bike about 3 weeks, and it was stolen from the beach even though I had a good lock on it. i registered the serial number and put photos on "BikeLinc" so it would come up if anybody tried to sell it or hock it. Last week the police advised me they had found my bike during a raid on a house 60km away, looking for other stolen goods. They sent me a photo of the bike and it still looks pretty good. No rust, and still plenty of tread on the tires. The police advised me they had never found a bike after this amount of time, so it's a bit of a miracle - but hey - it happened. TJGermany When my bike got stolen in a very busy area (at Sainsbury's near Camden High Street main junction) after a few seconds a policeman was there like like 15 meters away (about 40 seconds after the theft), even a guy saw the thief who was just unlocking his bike next to the spot where my bike was supposed to be. The policeman made a radio call to local patrols about the theft and that was it. I gave him an exact description, it is a unique looking bike, easy to spot from far. I never got that bike back, it wasnt super expensive thought and I bought a new one and a better lock. I was working as a push bike courier. so it was very devastating to start over again, buy a new buy to work and buy all the custom parts I need.

The thing to take away from this: don't use anything that can be broken off without an angle grinder. Slightly annoying they've blurred out the brands on the lock...that would be very useful information.

I lived in London for 13 years and in that time I had 6 bikes stolen from me. It was part and parcel of living in London. A very effective cheap way of devalueing the look of you bike is to simply wrap a plastic grocery/shopping bag over the saddle of the bike. When portable grinders started to become available heavy duty locks were no trouble for bike thieves. Sometimes thieves will cut away the railing and load the still locked bike and railing into the back of a van to be worked on later at a workshop.

@@Orcinus24x5 And yet you didn't read my ENTIRE comment where I specifically said it would delay and make it extra hard. That's called cherry-picking. Do better. There are a half dozen videos where it takes 5 or 6 grinder wheels before eventually getting through those locks. That's essentially grinder proof to an owner. Thieves are not going to spend 20 minutes changing those wheels and making a scene when other targets are easier. Furthermore, nowhere in my original comment did I say they were grinder PROOF. I said they will survive a grinder attack (by the method I said herein). So stop being a pedantic putz.

Two great ways to deter theives is 1) Remove the Seat and carry it with you. 2) Untighten the Handlebars so if they try riding it, they can't steer it. It's easy for you to carry a Wrench to tighten both of these back up. Theives don't have time for that. Or if you REALLY want to make it difficult, get Removeable Pedals, so they have no way to race away with it!

Cities like London need secure bicycle parkings!

We're moving back to the UK/SW London in 3 months. I'm looking forward to being able to riding everywhere again, especially with our toddler, but the cycle theft issue bothers me. As a lifelong cyclist and enthusiast I've had plenty stolen and I've always had top-notch locks. As you can see, they can all be broken. Weigh up your options, never use a cheap, nasty cable lock.

It would be nice if town/city councils built 'behind locked-door' security premises for xxx bikes similar to Holland. I have an e-bike and have only parked it twice for under 10 minutes in my city; I don't like the pavement hoop system, I think the UK can do better 😐

Clearly the best deterrent would spray painting 30 bikes blaze orange and set them around London. In addition, add a thin cable bike lock as well as filling a portion of the bike tube that goes between the legs with a small amount of c4 and a long distance detonator.

My solution... A chain with links of 1/4inch thick steel and a padlock. That, and a quite elderly bike made of bits of junked bikes. The best compliment ever on my bike was made when I cycled past a bike thief that police had caught. He called out "what's that piece of S...". That told me that my commuting bike was not on his list. And yet I could do 30mph on it and stop when needed. That got me to and fro for years with my biggest expense being a new tyre every 3,000 miles.

IMO when a bike thief is caught and charged, one component of their sentence should be a public shaming. Post their picture and criminal record on all the major social media sites, also the web sites that do nothing to prevent stolen good from being advertised on their site. One reason that bike theft is so common is that it's so easy to 'resell' the bike on the street.
