Ayrton Senna was a genius in the wet, we all know that. But recently, I saw a stat that surprised me. This is Senns’a win ratio in the rain - he won more than half the wet races he took part in.
So, we know that Senna had incredible car control, but why was he so good in the wet. Well, in this video I’m going to break down Senna's driving technique, to explain how he was so dominant.

Something David Coulthard once said about Senna always sticks in my mind. "Ayrton believed that every new day was an opportunity to do better than the last." You really can't go far wrong with an attitude like that. Almost thirty-one years since his death, he is still sorely missed for many, many reasons.

At Donington, 93, Rubens Barrichello started the race in p17 and the end of the first lap was in p5. He attributed this to the experience of driving the kart in the rain on slick tires during his childhood, as he had no money to buy rain tires.

The most important stat is comparing their normal win rate to the win rate in the wet. The most successful drivers in the dry are Hamilton, Schumacher, Verstappen, Prost, Senna. Hamilton is 1.2x more likely to win in the wet than dry. Schumacher is 1.2x Verstappen is 1.5x Prost is 0.5x Senna is 2.2x Nobody comes close

The fun thing about him and wet driving was that he said in Portuguese how much he hated people in Brazil to wish the rain so he could win because he hated the rain as much as the others (except for having a minor advantage for him, as put in the video). Ha! The guy would just see raining since kid and that race he mentions and go out and stay hours and hours racing on his kart to improve. Yes, he was extra sensorial, he even managed to say an engine was broken before it was (with a Renault technician that opened the engine and was mesmerised to see a crack developing in the camber of the motor) but, a lot of it, also came through training. Since he allied both of those variables, natural instinct and training, he simply became the best ever.

Senna was good in the wet because he pracrised diligently in his karting days at the Interlagos karting track. Everyone knows about him saying how bad he was in his first wet race as a kid, and, tenatious as he was, he summoned his chauffeur to drive him to the track every time it rained (and it rains a lot in São Paulo), so he would be doing lap after lap all alone, just coming to terms with driving in the rain, which included the visibility factor, a crucial aspect few people consider. In 2013, I was attending the Brazilian GP, and it rained torrentially for all practise sections, and one driver stayed in the track doing countless laps, when no-one else even put the helmet on. That driver was Jules Biancchi in a sub par Marussia, I am certain he was just practicing in the wet, very much as Senna did meters away, 30 some years before. Sadly, both drivers died in freak accidents because of a damage to the head.

Senna driving is more spiritual then material. That's why imho he was on another plane in driving. You can understand that by the way he was talking about car. It' s more about felling then material perceptions. We have lost a driving "angel" that day. A bit more then any other driver in the ages. Respect.

Different times too, when Senna raced in the wet it literally was wet not like today, wet races today are nothing like those back then. Senna had a crazy amount of feel and trust in his ability, he did learn from past mistakes which made him a formidable driver like no other. Such a shame we didn't get to see how much more success he could have achieved in his career.

@MikkoRantalainen
@MikkoRantalainen Күн бұрын
@studlydudly Exactly this! The F1 regulation has been changed a lot and the modern regulation is more gimmicky: bans on changing car mechanically, requirement to use at least two different tyre compounds during the race even if it slows you down, requirement to use intentionally inferior tyres (the tyre manufacturers are required to manufacture soft rubber that must destroy itself in few laps no matter how much you baby the tyres), very very strict restrictions on aerodynamic surfaces of the car etc etc. F1 cars had to run the whole race on single set of tyres in 2005 but somehow we should think that after 20 years of additional research, modern tyres should only last a few laps?

The talent pool in F1 is ridiculously shallow. It's essentially limited to rich kids or people who live near race tracks. How many people have you ever met that race cars? Senna was a rich kid with talent. The perfect combination to look like an ungodly talent. Truth of the matter is that he would probably be average in sports where large numbers actually compete. This is true for almost all F1 drivers.

Another thing to consider with Senna, and I don't see this mentioned very often if at all... In his career he had 3.5 - 4 seasons in the best car (1991 was back and forth with the Williams) and for two of those seasons his teammate was Prost. Essentially he only had 1.5 - 2 seasons where he was unopposed. Compare that to the likes of Hamilton, Verstappen, and famously Schumacher.

That is exactly right, and his last 2 seasons at McLaren was a struggle with a weaker car compared to the more advanced Williams, and still won races. Given how the 94 season took shape, he would have likely won the 94 World Championship with his Williams car, and who knows he might have transferred to Ferrari instead of Schumacher or had teammate Schumacher. that would have been intense... I dont think 7 or 9 championships were out of reach for Senna, had he decided to go for that long.

I raced Karts in Vancouver B.C. for 13 years, and with around 150 - 170 days of rain annually, you kind of need to learn to race in the wet. I read and studied Senna's Principles of Race Car Driving in the late 90's and tried to learn as much as I could about his wet driving style. When our new track opened in 2001, the very first race was a PNW Gold Cup event and a lot of my regular Club competitors did not attend. It absolutely poured the whole weekend, and the track was completely green, no rubber anywhere. I was able to spend all day Friday and most of Saturday experimenting with set-ups and lines, and the levels of grip on the new pavement were phenomenal. Using Senna's set-up and practice techniques I was able to get extremely comfortable at insane speeds in the wet. When I ran the first Club race, which was also wet, I took pole by over a second, and in the race I lapped everyone to second place. Over the next 2 seasons I won all but 2 wet races, finishing second in those 2. Before I read Senna's book I hadn't won a race, dry or wet.

Like many here I was also at Donington in 1993. The day was unbelievably wet, the rain was just incessant and I was completely soaked through - I stripped off when I got back to my Renault 5GT Turbo and my brother and I drove home in our pants ! Anyway, it was a spectacular drive by Senna but the traction control made those cars a lot easier to drive in conditions like that. When we arrived at the circuit, free practice was going and I remember seeing Barrichello driving the Jordan through McLeans in a wall of spray and you could hear the traction control modulating the throttle as it effortless carved through the river beneath it. I'm a massive Senna fan - he was the driver of my era - and I know I'll be unpopular for this but I honestly think Verstappen's drive in Brazil was as good if not better than Senna's that day in 1993. That said, I consider myself very privileged to have been there to witness it that day and to have seen many other great drives by Senna in the flesh.

You can see on most races Senna is always making the rear dance even on straights, he was always looking and testing the grip.

At Donington in 1993 the active aero on the Williams wasn’t working and was causing Prost and Hill aquaplaning by slamming the car into the ground, so the Williams at Donington wasn’t “faster” like it’s said at 13:00

The main reason I got into F-1 was Senna and especially in the Honda MP4-5, magical days.

He just always pushed the limits even when he didn't have to, making him comfortable on the edge, and the edge is very narrow in the wet.

0:10 Shout-out to Jenson Button on that wet/overall ratio. Almost 1 in 5 five wet race wins, but 1 in 20 overall. And Thierry Boutsen. Impressive.

To my mind, Thierry Boutsen's wet statistics are excellent. 2 of his 3 wins came in wet conditions, as though the low grip conditions took away the advantage other cars had allowing Boutsen to show his ability.

Driving through the pits to get the fastest lap wasn’t a clever trick Senna pulled that day, it was a misunderstanding with the team. He came in expecting to change tyres and the team weren’t ready so he just drove straight down the pit lane without stopping.

What's most incredible is that Max and Lewis have such a high percentage even though they've raced one another for so many years now. Imagine Max's percentage if you give him all races where he finished second behind Hamilton.

When the cars are harder the drive the skill becomes more important. Thats why MV at #2 might even be more impressive as the cars now are easier to drive.

Interesting but .... 1) These statistics include dry qualifying before a wet race. It would be interesting to also count the amount of overtakes (places won) in wet races per driver. 2) These statistics only score race wins, other podium finishes or good results are left out, which skews results.
