Usually, I make the main portion of the picture traditionally with pencil and ink. Then I'll fix up some of the lineart; add screentones; adjust panel sizes on the digitally. Your drawing will still look very natural if you use both mediums. Use any method that works to your advantage

@@zeadartist4773 exactky as said ^^^ I'd recommend png rather than jpg for your drawing. Keeps more destail. Most programs will have the option to seperate your black into it's own layer. That's why you draw with red and blue lead. Digital feels much different t han traditional. That's why I don't draw digitally. It takes a while to get used to.

I don't blame mangakas doing digital with their intense schedules and living conditions. I am still surprised some of the popular mangakas still live in cheap looking apartments and spaces. I have a feeling they don't get paid that much for the amount of work they do and sales.

I’m just starting out. And for now I think I want to to learn how to sketch panels and I’m not sure if I want to line on paper or digitally. I definitely would rather finish off by coloring digitally so I can mess around with different palettes. I have a lot to learn tho

I’m no artist but I feel like digitally drawn Manga just tends to be lazier. I couldn’t imagine how difficult it is make a weekly serialized manga but with more things going digital I feel the magic of manga kind of fleeting and looking more like western comics. I thought about this after reading Gachiakuto

Not really as an aspiring manga artist my self I don't think that digitally drawn manga is lazier, due to the industry growing on a whole other level the demands from creators exploded to a point where a lot of mangakas have health problems and with the use of digital equipment it is faster for them to produce work and also it is cheaper in the long run, having to buy ink, pens, screentones, professional paper and other tools is a lot more expensive than what people think. Also great managakas such as Boichi (Artist of Dr.Stone) switched to digital because of how faster they can produce work and also how easier it is for a team to work on a chapter especially now in an era of quarantine. So I can understand and agree with your statement that it is extremely hard for a manga creator to draw those 20 pages per week traditionally but there is no need for that when they can go to digital and actually have some time to spend with their families etc..

@@zenonakhs I totally agree digital can be used really well there’s just certain techniques I’m really not a fan of in digital and maybe it’s subjective but 1. Thick digital lines that don’t carry the same subtlety as traditional art. I really really hate the line width most digital artists use especially outside of Japan. 2. Steep gradients. Having a highly computerized gradient shading all over your pages just makes it feel cheap and just shading in general seems to be overused in digital only manga it’s really jarring imo 3. ”blocky” looking art idk why but digitally drawn manga tends to not have the same curvature or fluidity in its art that most really great manga from the past carry. I might not be explain that 3rd point very well but I stand by it. As for mangaka’s workload I know it’s really insane and I’m in no place to question ANY artists work ethic because of how mentally and physically demanding it is, these guys are heroes to me partially for that reason. When I said lazy I didn’t necessarily mean the physical labor part of it I was more so saying that the thought put into the art style is often lazy and with so many amazing examples in manga history to go off of I just feel too often digital creators cement a “cheaper” looking art style by like I said over use of shading and poor aesthetic choices. You bringing up Dr. Stone perfectly sums up my overall thoughts on digital manga, it can be beautiful and not jarring at all because I LOVE that manga, but it’s all in the hands of the artists, as a fan of classic manga I just want to voice that gripe so future mangaka such as yourself can hopefully match the aesthetic qualit of traditional art going forward. I don’t expect every manga to have super extravagant ‘Vagabond’ level art I just think the small subtle aesthetic choices can go a realllllly long way. Either way even if someone draws art that isn’t to my liking I still respect and love and am super proud of all artists following their dreams so I don’t mean to come off as disrespectful in any way.

@@Glotaku Thanks for the elaboration on your points, to state my opinion on those as well, not all digitally drawn manga have those thick lines, it is just that it is easier to draw with thick lines so a lot of artists use that art style but there are a ton of other mangaka who draw digitally and don't follow that rule of thick lines like most of shojo manga artists who draw digitally, gradients where used in dradition manga as well, usually shonen manga don't use that many gradients because most of shonen manga just dont use screentones for the most part such as older series, naruto, bleach or newer ones such as jujutsu kaisen or demon slayer in which screentones are only used limited times and for the most part on clothing so most shonen manga don't use gradients as well on the other hand shojo manga use screentones and gradients all the time and somewhere in between are just slice of life stories and seinen series (Seinen usually use cross-hatching for shading but tones as well) also nearly all mangaka even if they create their manga traditionally usually theu tone digitally so that doesn't change anything, oh and also you said you don't really like the highly shaded series with tones i recommend you have a look at "Blue Period" because in this series screentones and gradients are used a lot and at least until to the ink part it is made traditionally as stated by the mangaka and this series is considered to have amazing art style and it is one of my favorites as well. Then you talked about the blocky art I am not sure If I understood exacly what you meant but If I understood correcly then what about jujutsu kaisen the art style in it is super blocky and I am pretty sure it is made traditionally. Also I just wanted to point out that there are a ton of great mangaka who create their manga entirly digitially such as Shinichi Sakamoto with some of the best art style and art quality I have ever seen kzbin.info/www/bejne/inXTn2ycmdiFmLs have a look at that video if you want more information about him and how he works only digitally. Also I in no mean want to come off as disrespectfull or offensive sorry if how I talk sounds like it. :)

As an artist I kinda disagree. I love traditional and I would choose traditional in all conditions except one. That is a time based schedule. When ever Iam involved in any thing that has a regular schedule I rather choose digital for its efficiency in time and material. Many people dont know that digital drawjng takes its own learning curve and a traditional cant just jump in and make a digital art just like that.

Imo I think for manga I prefer traditional mediums Mainly because as stated in “Manga in practice and theory” it gives more of a performance feel to the art and gives you a more raw feel of the skills. So if you mess up you can’t fix it witch gives you a risk factor.(you could just scan the work and fix it digitally but I think it’s better to let it be IMO)

The reason I'm switching to Digital has to do with convenience. With Traditional Art I need to have many tools to make art. Of course, it will depend on the type of art, but still a lot of tools are needed. With Digital Art, all I need is a good Computer, a good Tablet, and good Software. Of course, digital art isn't cheap either, but it requires few tools to make art with it. And with Digital Art, I don't need a Scanning Machine to publish my arts.

Traditional is a really bad choice unless your skillset specifically requires it. Digital is much faster, and speed is a big component of content creating.
