This is very interesting, I'm still new and self learning from home. I plan on just working myself and not having techs because I live outside of a smaller college town with not much competition. I also work full time at another job, so locksmthing will be a part time gig for me until i build it up, which at this point will take a while. With family owned businesses it's always extremely tough to make the employees feel they are being properly compensated for the success of the owner. This should be viewed as an opportunity to reward your employees ,vrs as in a Corporate structure where they can feel that they are just a "cog in the wheel". Extra rewards for superior performance can help to make those employees feel that they are a part of the success of your business. Profit sharing is one of the ways, as a prudent #lockboss.

You work, you get paid, don’t work you don’t get paid. I’ve worked trucking (13 1/2 yrs), Automotive, Semi Trucks & Trailers, Welding, Food service delivery. In food service delivery we had ABC pay, Activity Based Compensation. We got paid by the amount of food cases, elevator, steps down or up, dumb waiter, amount of stops, mileage. One day a week, this was back in 2001, we averaged $35 per hour with mileage, stops, case count, premium stop but other days I made half that some days. #Lockboss

With the mark up margins with Key Control and High Security. Your Locksmiths should push to up sell security. Most customers are not knowledgeable on what is out there. We attend trade shows to get a head of what is hot and new to the industry. I left working for local Locksmith Companies because I had the ambition to sell when they wanted to stay in a comfort zone. I'm looking to work for Lock Manufacturers in Sales now. I could achieve more income for me and my family. I always had enough to pay bills. I have nothing while owners are building their wealth. Thank you for bringing up this topic that has never been discussed. I did get 1% on $1,000 safe and under 3% on $1,000 and over. 5% on $5,000 safe sales.

I never got the chance to start my career to work under anyone. I wish I did so i can learn..But now I have been doing locksmithing for 3 years and doing pretty good at it, i could never (probably not) be able to work under anyone..The Pay is too different. I can make a car key for $150 takes about 30 minutes- but if i go work under someone else, ill be be paid hourly and wouldn't earn nearly as much. However, I do understand the over head, the materials, equipment, that I wouldn't need to buy let alone have to get the cliente- that is the hard part. Its just psychology I suppose...I would like to work for a company who pays commissions

I’m just a one man show. But when I meet a customer at the job. I walk the job really quickly with the customer and make sure everything is working properly. If I see a problem I ask the customer have they been having any problems with the particular problem I see. When they say yes. I simply offer an explanation why they’re having a difficulty with the problem. And suggest a solution. And if they are ready to do it right away. I back off and let them know if or when they’re ready I can come back and fix it. Note to new locksmiths. Keep any product on your vehicle that you’re comfortable to offer to the customer. Don’t worry about carrying stuff you have difficulty installing or explaining. Keep up sales simple

As a locksmith for 20 years commission is definitely not the way. I was a school locksmith up north for 10 years wanted to make a move to florida talked to a shop owner promised me more pay per hour benefits retirement etc. The minute i left and moved down no hourly just commission drove around in a van for days wirh one job in 12 hours for 20 bucks. With a big house payment that was not going to cut it. Also the techs that were here longer would cherry pick the good jobs and leave me with nothing. So hourly is the best way for locksmiths with alot of years of experience 30 to 35 is a great rate.
