Mike Schur joins the show and discusses Shohei Ohtani signing a $700 million deal but deferring $680 million deal. How should we feel about it? Is it fair? Also, why the Atlanta Braves are the super team that we should worry about. Then we watch Lucy's video from attending the Army vs. Navy game this weekend. Finally, how old are these pictures of old time baseball players.

He's so smart, and always thinking about what's best for the development of baseball. And with this contract, he raises questions about the inconsistency of the current "CBT". And after 10 years, he will use the money he earns, not for himself, but for someone else. For the development of baseball, which he loves. For example, if he donates some ballparks for baseball kids, that's exactly the American dream.

in mlb, there's a luxury tax threshold ($237m next year and this threshold trends with expected inflation), and if you go above that you get a penalty or a competitive balance tax (CBT). the salary that goes against the CBT is the average annual value (AAV). basically, how much the player is making during his contract divided by the number of years of his contract. in ohtani's case the AAV is $46m. so that's what he's making each year from a CBT standpoint. i.e he gets $2m now, and gets the remainder or ($46m-$2m) x (1 + 4.5%)^10 = $68m ten years later. when you add the two, and multiply by 10, you get $700m so i interpret how CBT sees things as: $46m per year for ten years = (each year he gets $2m of the $46m) + ($68m is paid out 10 years later but that needs to be detrended 4.5% per year for expected inflation) a lot of people are making a big deal about this, but i don't see an issue with the math mlb is using. i mean you need to detrend the deferrals for expected inflation to determine the value of the player which is essentially what mlb is doing. i guess you can argue about the rate of expected inflation that is being used, but i think you need to pick something.

It's always the wealthiest who looks to circumvent the loopholes of rules. Although technically they did not break the rule, they did break the spirit of the baseball financial payroll structure and made it more unfair than what it already is. Every team should be able to operate on a even platform, but unfortunately that is not the case and now that Dodgers found a way to work around the payroll structure that a majority of teams can not do. The baseball commissioner should had used the best interest of baseball bylaws to stop this contractual signing..This is very shameful by MLB to allow this! Wait did he just say Ohtani the best hitter in the game? Ohtani is one of the better player in the game, because he is allowed to pitch and hit, but he ain't the best hitter in baseball he might be the best DH in baseball although I believe Bryce Harper is better.

Nobody is gonna defer 98% of their salary. There’s no loophole😂
@ramongonzalez6653
@ramongonzalez6653 Жыл бұрын
@@RunForPeace-hk1cu Really! you don't see it or don't want to see it. MLB created a threshold to hold teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and other big market teams to pay a price for signing FA players to big contracts and going beyond the threshold, now by deferring the money they have more money to continue signing big money free agents without affecting the threshold amount because they are paying the contract beyond the 10 years of service. If Dodger was not able to defer Ohtani 700 million dollar contract and had to add the 70 million a year to their payroll for this upcoming year would had made nearly impossible to sign anyone else unless the would want to own a 360 million or more payroll. So how this NOT a loophole?
