I grew up in Berkeley across the street from CSD. We made friends with a lot of the deaf kids and they taught us curious children how to sign. Insults mostly, and the alphabet. I consider ASL to be THE universal language, it should be taught in elementary school. Signs represent words but can be words in any spoken language. Bravo Melissa!

It is definitely not a universal language. Most countries have their own, unique sign languages.
