How similar or different are wars in Croatia and Ukraine | What can we learn from it

The history repeats itself. Not so long time ago Yugoslav wars created a huge impact shaking entire Europe. Croatia was fighting for independence.
Many things things are similar to current war in Ukraine. But of course there are some differences also. In any case we can learn a lot from recent past and make conclusions.

@@mariocroatia9321 It is true, as I stick with most all Serbian videos, but the others intrude. This Ukrainian guy here was in Serbia before Croatia and has a video from there and there are Albanians and others plaguing it. I can understand if something is POLITICAL that the other side would want to stick up for themselves, but when it is even a folk or traditional song and the Muslims and Croats say something abusive and ruin most every video, then they are more aggressive. The reason Serbs are on THIS video is this guy made a provocative video in Serbia just before, and so people started to look at his channel, and here he is justifying Tudjman's severe ethnic cleansing of the Serbs population, which was aided by the U.S. (MPRI) and foreign powers. Even UN officers said they took weapons from Serbs which were the very weapons they needed to save their lives. The UN didn't defend the Serb villages after disarming them, they stepped aside and allowed Croats to kill them. The Medak Pocket for example was witnessed by Canadian soldiers, but they didn't save the lives of any Serbs nor prevent it from being completely destroyed.

The Russian-Ukraine conflict is a lot bigger and unfortunately there are already a lot more dead there. The Serb attack on Croatia in 1991 was more brutal in some cases and marked by the indifference of most of the international community who actually were helping Serbia in the beginning by imposing an international arms embargo on Croatia.
@jobrock1079
@jobrock1079 Жыл бұрын
No, the "international community" was allowing the smuggling of arms and shiploads of weapons to Croatia and BiH. The "international community" only spoke out when the JNA was gaining the upper hand. They would scream for it to go back to their barracks, which they obediently did, and then the Croat forces would start again. This is what happened in Vukovar with something like 19 ceasefires called in the 5.5 months of war, so every week/week-and-a-half there'd be another ceasefire. And Croatia death squads under TOMISLAV MERCEP were killing Vukovar Serbs civilians even before that war officially began. Serbs were being "arrested" and abducted, then taken to a fallout shelter where they were tortured, and then brought to the edge of a river and shot. The bodies of Serbs (and NO Croats) were washing up on the riverbanks in Croatia. This was also being done in Osijek by BRANIMIR GLAVAS and his men.

Wow, I didn't know the exact details of the war in Croatia, like that part about the peaceful reintegration of the eastern part. But, I'm assuming that was only possible due to the show of force during those operations when most of the territory was liberated. This only goes to show that as long as you're willing to stand and fight for your country, the west is willing to support you. That's just how it is. No way around it. There are many similarities indeed and this could last a long time. That said, the Ukrainians have shown incredible morale and willingness to defend their country, it's really inspiring. They are also utilizing our weapons very effectively. Keep it up guys, Europe supports you!

Yes, after the operation "Storm". There was a option for Serbians, peaceful reintegration of the eastern part or the operation "Thunder". The plan was to have three operations, where only first two have been launched "Bljesak" ( Flash ) - "Oluja" ( Storm ) - "Grom" ( Thunder ), which would write B.O.G. ( God ).
@molaehin5545
@molaehin5545 Жыл бұрын
After Operation Storm in 2995, Croatian Army Brigades pushed into Western Bosnia and inflicted repeated major defeats on Bosnian Serb forces in a co-ordinated campaign with the Army of BiH. These defeats made Belgrade push Serbs in Eastern Croatia to accept a peace deal because Croatia had built up a substantial military with strong offensive cababilities by the autumn on 1995.
@davids210
@davids210 Жыл бұрын
The only reason why the eastern part was peacefully reintegrated @Alex Larsen, was that there where 3 Armies in Croatia: The Croatian Army, Croatian Serb Army (Serbs born in Croatia, 10% of entire population in Croatia) and Army of Yugoslavia. It's one thing to fight against you're own ethnic minority army and another against a country that had fought wars against: The Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungary, German Empire, Nazi-Germany and won all those wars! The only reason why there was a "peaceful reintegration" was because that part was under control of the Army of Yugoslavia. When asked about what would happen if the Serbs (Yugoslav Army) reacted during the "Storm" operation, Croatian General Petar Stipetic said "Well, we could hold on for a few days" and Croatian President Franjo Tudman said in 1999 when Yugoslavia was doing partial mobilisation in the face of the NATO bombing, that Croatia will seek the protection of the US if attacked by them. Why would he said that if Croatia has won a war against Serbia (FR of Yugoslavia at that time), very simple, they didn't!

The two conflicts are only similar on a very surface level, it's actually a pretty insulting and reductionist comparison to make. If Croatia had received this much western support and armaments back in the 90's rather than an arms embargo, the entire region would look a lot different today.

@ZvonimirVZ 11 ай бұрын
There are similarities and differencies. Similarities: the Serbs did not want to accept a sovereign Croatia and were refusing to acknowledge an own Croatian identity. The same thing is the case with Russians towards Ukraine. Framing the Croats as fascists, just like the Russians do to Ukrainians. Differences: basically this what you mentioned. Croatia was not welcomed as a sovereign state, was under an international arms embargo and the international recognition happened only after Croatia proved to be able to maintain its independence by force. European and U.S. support for Croatia happened gradually. The intelligence provided by the U.S. was of significant importance to end the war as well as to conclude the Agreements of Erdut (the peaceful reintegration of Eastern Slavonia into Croatia) and Dayton (in order to end the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.) Still, baer in mind that in 1991, 10 days before Ukraine would declare independence, the U.S President George Bush Senior visited Kyiv in order to persuede Ukrainians not to opt for independence, but to stay in the Soviet Union. In 1994 Washington and London were pushing Ukraine (as well as Belarus and Kazakhstan) to abandon their nuclear arsenal to the benefit of Russia in exchange of security assurances regarding the sovereignity and independence of the country within the existing borders. The agreement known as the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances was not honored by its garantors.

From someone who participated in the war in Croatia on the front line (on both sides by fate), I can say that Putin fully copied serbian Slobodan Milošević's plan of annexing parts of Croatia. The first difference was that at the start of the war we had almost no weapons, no one wanted to sell it (because of US sponsored arms embargo), let alone to gave it us. Another thing, which may happen in Ukraine too, is that the world community tried to "legalize" the Serbian occupation through the Z4 plan. But to Milošević's surprise, local serbs rejected the plan and Croats had huge will to fight, so his plan failed - which I truly hope will be also case with Ukraine! Another difference, maybe the most important, is that when we were liberating the occupied territories, Serbian Yugoslavia neither wanted nor could interfere because it was politically, militarily and economically too weak (Milosevic also fear then that NATO may attack them if they openly interfere), which may unfortunately not be the case with Russia as a nuclear superpower.

What is one more difference is that at same time there was very complicated war in Bosnia and Herzegovina which influenced war in Croatia, for example we receieved many refugees from Bosnia and also attack from Bosnia side was crucial for liberation of Knin, also in Bosnia there was bloody Croat vs Mislim Bosniak war and also Muslim vs Muslim war and on top of that in some areas there were even better relations between Serbs and Croats than Croats and Bosniaks, one of reasons that International community was looking with aproval towards operation Storm was Srebrenica Massacre and chance that that, happens in Bihać and operation Storm would break the Bihać siege and stop another Srebrenica, things just came together. Also Serbs did not accept Z4 peace plan for peacefull reintegration . Btw that Croats vs Bosniak war was one very fierce war within war, only when that war stopped tide against Serbs changed.

More focused on Croatian interests. UA leaders - not smart enough to avoid war, not smart enough to achieve truce (constant fighting - no peace talks?) and we will see for final outcome. Arming Croatia - taking from the enemy (sourrounding of Jugoslav army bases in Croatia) and smuggling Arming Ukraine - buying on the market + help from collective West Possible oucomes: Croatian scanario - Ukraine win and kick Russian forces out of country Bosnian scenario - part of Ukraine under Ukrainian (like Federation B&H) and part as separate entity within Ukraine but under Russian control (like Republic Srpska) Serbian scenario - truce achieved. Russian keeps the territory taken by war and consider it Russian and Ukraine call it occupied territory. Both sides wait for a better chance for second round once in future. Just like today Kosovo consider itself independent and Serbia consider it as a part of Serbia.. I find Serbian scenario most likely...

The similar situation between two wars is: serbian minority expected to take over a huge part of Croatia, the serbian planed border would be the line between the cities Virovitica, Karlovac, Ogulin, Karlobar. (I am not sure, just I guess the Croatia would loose ca. 50% of the teritory). The plan didn't work as expected since the Croats gave with a little and week weapons strong resistance. When you (as Croats) fight for your own home, then you have huge motivation. The serbs explained the attacks, they would help the serbs in Croatia. Ukraine is much bigger, but the same cause of the war, the same motivation just to save country. The Ukrain forces do not attack russia and they don't plan to take over a part of russia. This is my point of view and of the most countries of this small world.

In order to understand war in Yugoslavia first you have to know constitution of SFRJ and then all political parties and their involvements in it. A lot of laws have been broken by both Serbs and Croatians and others, one wanted to keep everyone together (Milosevic) because serbs were majority and he would be in power for very long time as long as he have serbs on his side, and Croats wanted their own country to be self govern at all cost, and that cost was war. that part were Milosevic wanted them all together because serbs were majority and he would always win is the reason why the wars were so bloody, because serbs knew if they are left in croatia without their own republic they would be under threat because they would never have their own that can win in politics, the same case was in Bosnia,... everyone was offered to join EU + money and what not, but croatians were first to refuse, and Milosevic words were: either we go in EU as Yugoslavia or everyone can do what ever they wanted, i think bosnians were somewhat more reasonable but still wanted to have central government in Bosnia (small Yugoslavia) which wasn't an option in that time My personal opinion is: if you decide to go to war then go all the way and do what ever is necessary to win if not then there is no point starting a war, and killing everyone is not winning the war, war is about economy and land but you still need people for both economy and that land, land without people is useless, War in Yugoslavia was unnecessary in my opinion, serbs could have peacefully through EU gain more, if motivated enough even their own republics in Croatia and Bosnia and Kosovo would have been physically still part of Serbia, Serbian economy would now been probably close to Check Republic (GDPP) , war is dangerous game

Yes there are similarities between conflicts in former Yugoslavia (between Serbs and Croats) аnd former USSR (between Russians and Ukrainians). 1. Croats becomed from Serbs ( Croats are Serbs forced to convert from Orthodox to Catholic religion. Ukrainians becomed from Russians ( Ucrainians are converted Rusians) 2. During ww2 borh in Croatia and Ucraine there was very strong NAZI regimes which committed genocide ( leader of Croatian NAZI regime was Pavelic and leader of Ukrainian NAZI regime was Bandera) 3. In both countries Croatia and Ukraina today NAZI ideology is still alive and very active. 3. During ww2 and from 1991-1995 Croats committed genocide against local Serbian population (starting by denying themselves right to use language, banning their organizations, banning their cultural identity, banning their rights to work and forcing them out from their works and forcing them to convert from Orthodox to Catholic religion and thus become Croats) In Ukraine it was the same in DNR and LNR and in whole Ukraine. After the USA backed coup in 2014. Ukraine denied rights to Russian speaking people. They banned opposition TV stations, forbidden opposition political parties, tried to rewrite history of ww2, the same like Croats does. 4. Croatia have Ustasa NAZI moovment and Ukraine have Azov, Ajdar, Right Sector, NAZI moovment. ( Just check tatoos of the Azov members and see what happened in Canadian parliament) 5. Both NAZI moovment members in Croatia and Ukraine was supported and founded from foreign countries. Both NAZI moovments in Croatia and Ukraine was ready for crimes like burning people alive ( Croatian Ustase did it in the church of Glina and Ukrainian NAZIST did it in Odesa) The list of Croatian and Ukrainisn similarities are endless but also there are some differences like Serbs was without nuclear wepons. About differences will scribe in another post.

How do we imagine that attack on "Croatia" today? Croatians were armed for long time and illegally declared independence trying with violence to claim Serbian populated areas. It was not a country, it was part of Yugoslavia and by law it had 2 constitutional nations, equally Serbs and Croats. Serbian army never attacked. It was obvious lie, but Serbs were attacked in their homes, their country and had to defend. Serbs were there since forever and they already suffer genocides in the past from Hitler's puppet creation, first Croatia. Some time Yugoslav national army had some activities. It was official army of legal country trying to calm separatists. That army was equally army of Croats and other parts of Yugoslavia. It was led mostly by Croats. To start with Tito. This was for those who like truth as Croatia as a state and those events are biggest worlds lie with ONLY Serbs ethnically cleansed with help of the Western countries. Final attack was on UN protected area populated by Serbs. Whole truth in short for those who like truth more than Hollywood scenarios. Now you are free to spin again as much as you want.

@@northernstar4811 Yet the Croats fought with the Bosnian Muslims in 1993, and when they were surrounded, they asked Serbs for help, and Serbs allowed the surrounded Croats to leave, and with their weapons through their (Serbian) lines. These same Croats that were saved from probably extermination, repaid this favor by attacking Serbs in Croatia AND into Bosnia during "Operation Storm". And, by the way, a Scottish mercenary who fought in the Croat HVO and Special forces against BOTH Serbs and then Bosnian Muslims, was most shocked by what the Bosnian Muslims did to the Croat villages in central Bosnia. He saw that the Muslims would deliberately mutilate the civilians, including mothers and infants, and even the animals. For him, the Bosnian Muslims were the most brutal and cruel. His experience in fighting the Serbs was mostly regular fighting, while he admitted killing civilians, including Serb and Muslim females. Generally if a figure was walking near or close to his lines, he would shout that person down, rather than take chances. These mercenaries like him were able to kill Bosnian civilians (from all sides) and get away Scot-free.

The Croats were in an alliance with the Bosniaks for most of the war. The Croat-Bosniak war lasted for only one year (1993-1994). In 1992 and 1994-1995, the Croats defended Bosnia and liberated half of the country from Serbian aggression, Croatia also took in hundreds of thousands of Bosniak refugees. Also, 30,000, really? 10,000 Bosniaks and Croats died in the Bosniak-Croat war, so that's 10% of the total casualties from the Bosnian War. The majority of Bosniaks and Croats (soldiers and civilians) were killed by the Serbs.

There are lots of similarities but major differences . Main similarity is the involvement of the US/NATO/EU and their protagonism of war . They want the war to continue to antagonize Russia and test their weapons which is why they are making big weapons promises to Ukraine with many provocative actions but delivering very slow and deliberate. Another similarity is the legacy and new political factions on both sides that create conflict with their maximalist and centralized demands. The main difference is the terrain and the drone technology along with heavier weapons. Black Sea and Dnieper River area is very flat and impossible to hide and defend which makes it tempting to be on the attack mode. Adriatic Sea area is mostly mountainous and and hilly with natural borders so it favors defense instead of an attack. The other difference is drones which didn't exist then which makes this war much more offensive and harder to stop and take the break. Drones along with much heavier weapons is why this war is more deadlier and favors offense. As for direct comparison , yes there are many. Croatia and Ukraine were/are desperately western and are supported by nato/eu/usa but Serbia was surrounded and economically destroyed by sanctions and they had to give up. Russia is not surrounded despite attempts and it can survive sanctions unabated and it has nukes and other extreme weapons. These differences make it impossible for Ukraine to win militarily so they can only do attritional warfare at the behest of EU/USA . Ukraine wins by quitting and surrendering now . NATO wins by prolonging this conflict as much as possible. Russia wins by keeping NATO as far away as possible. Take your pick .

Wrong analogy with Croatia, if you were familiar with the genocide of the Serbs of Croatia in WW2, you wouldn’t make any such comparison. The situation regarding present day Ukraine is indeed reminiscent of Yugoslavia back in the 1990’s when Bill Clinton ordered NATO to attack that sovereign nation. Like Ukraine, Yugoslavia was at that time battling against separatists on its southern most territory. Bill Clinton ordered NATO to attack Yugoslavia to assist the KLA separatists and to effect regime change in Yugoslavia. Putin is using the same Clinton pretext of defending a separatists region of Ukraine and also attempting to facilitate a regime change in Ukraine. Putin’s actions should be condemned just as Clinton should have been condemned for attacking the sovereign nation of Yugoslavia. Seeing it in any other light would be absolutely hypocritical

JNA stvara nove brigade u okolini Zagreba, Knina, Banje Luke i u Hercegovini. 28.6.1990.

Ukraine today is reminiscent of the 1999 NATO bombing campaign against Yugoslavia. That military campaign had the dubious distinction of being the first time NATO aligned itself with a terrorist group fomenting an insurgency against the sovereign state of Yugoslavia. Defying the UN Security Council, the United States under William Jefferson Clinton and other NATO countries bombed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for 78 days, providing vital air support for the Kosovo Liberation Army, which ironically was previously labeled a terrorist organization by the CIA under George Bush Sr.
