This is the problem with attributing this behavior to slavery. The people who act like this will always have a scapegoat for their behavior. “It’s because my ancestors were in chains”. Which is true but we came out of slavery still marrying and in a nuclear family. This is a result of the feminist movement and gangster rap, both of which came around fairly recently
@youngdonreborn14 күн бұрын
You're thinking about it a bit too simplistically. By studying slavery and the subsequent ripple effects of slavery you will understand how this culture is almost completely a result of slavery. Although it is true that we can find some statistics that suggest single motherhood was far more uncommon in the years leading up to the 1960's and has gotten worse since, you cannot divorce the current state of black culture from slavery by saying, "why has these things gotten worse if opportunities for blacks have gotten better", a common modern conservative argument. This argument seeks to blame blacks for their condition and place no responsiblity on the environment they are in as a result of being the descendants of slaves. The fact is that as a result of slavery, blacks we forced to be uneducated and were prevented from accumulating any wealth. Once they received freedom, the majority of them had no resources, little useful skills besides that what was related to basic agriculture and no education. They also flocked to the North to get away from the violent racism of the South, but having no skills or resources, were incapable of affording the average home or finding work that paid well enoguh to do more than just get by. They were also still prevented from attending good schools due to segregation. This forced large amounts of black people to live together in subpar and small dwellings in communities that became known as ghettos. Being relegated to this condition, severly handicapped by poverty, low education and segregation, they became highly suspetable to a hedonistic lifestyle that served to pacify their wretched lives and distract themselves, something that can be found in all peoples when they live in conditions that seem hopeless. This ofcourse compounded overtime and has resulted in the culture we have today. Also, do not forget that poor people and under educated people typically have MORE children than educated people that have money, regardless of the availability of welfare. This has led to the offspring of poor uneducated blacks in ghettos far outpacing the amount of children that more highly educated and successful blacks have, thus causing the percentage of blacks in poverty to grow faster than the amount of blacks in the middle class. Lastly, the hedonistic lifestyle of sex, gambling, drugs and alchohol that was bred in the ghetto as a result of these poor uneducated blacks being "trapped" there precisely because of racism, slavery, jim crow etc, creates a destructive cycle, as children immitate their parents. And so combine that with the fact that they have more children, the end result is what we have today. The history of racism in this country relegated poor blacks to seeing entertainment and crime as the only viable options of "getting out" of the ghetto, because they did not have higher education as an option. Thus these lifestyles became glorified and engrained within their culture. Ultimately, yes, each individual has to take responsiblity for the course of their lives by the decisions they make. But without the necessary knowledge that one needs to change their condition, the task seems impossible. For instance, you probably think starting a KZbin channel that can generate 6 figures a year is difficult and probably impossible for you, because you don't have the required "knowledge" that it takes to start one, and thus probably believe it is mostly based on luck. I on the other hand believe that it is fairly simple because I have the knowledge, I am currently in the process of making another successful youtube channel from scratch completely divorced from my current Young Don Brand just for fun, and I have full confidence it will blow up eventually because I know what I'm doing. In the same way, what seems to you like simple steps to improve your life and move up in the world is a complete mystery to people who are born into poverty.

I’m a black 24 y/o male. The “culture” is like a virus waiting to be cured. In every aspect. Music, philosophy and all. There’s a constant need for attention to be specifically targeting towards the “community and its accomplishments” but no action as far as improving the community in how it thinks and operates. Everyone wants money, but the fast way. Everyone wants to start a business, but their own way, which usually is identical to everyone else’s business model within the community, effectively making it a copy and paste. No sense of unity and doing what’s necessary to improve the culture. It doesn’t seem like enough of the community is educated enough nor cares to improve on their education. Everyone is too good to be told anything. Everyone takes risk but not the right type of risk. Then the cycle continues.

You cooked with this response bro. I agree with you for one, but for two. To add on to what you said: The young intellectuals that come out of the black community often times don’t stay around in the community to help because of the negativity that comes with that. The crab in a barrel mentality is real, they’re less inclined to help talented young black men and women get to the bag but yet they remain complicit in making sure we don’t elevate as high as we can. I mean look at Deion sanders, he had ti leave an hbcu because they didn’t want to pay him what he was worth, but who did Colorado, a Pwi. Even throughout history we’ve seen it: I.e. Fred Hampton being set up by his own homeboy. As long as people seek to be like the Futures and Tyrone’s of the world as opposed to the Kendrick’s or Neil degrasse Tyson’s growth will not take place in our community.

I’m not the smartest individual, I’m a black teen guy (16). I think the best way to answer some of these issues is honestly God and the Bible. The standards of these communities like the black community would be great if the community was centred as true Christian ideals, not the version given by Black Christians now or some of the ultra conservative versions given by other individuals. The Bible tells us about having fun yet keeping ourselves pure, putting Jesus and his laws first and loving others as we love ourselves. There are definitely complex issues that are hard to solve and are systemic, but these simple principles and rules laid out for us by our Lord are ultimately there to give us a better life. He himself says that he wants to leave us with peace. He told the rich young ruler his issue was he didn’t want to give up his wealth for the poor. So God is not ultra conservative and yet not progressive. God is just good, and I think his laws show this. The Black community would thrive if true Christianity was preached in these communities, not pan africanism, Islam or Hebrew Israelism, amongst others.

@@cartercarter2837 the whole idea of white supremacy is kind of racist. There is no white person supreme or superior than me, there is also nothing that a white person can do that me as a black person cant. They tell us this to keep us unmotivated and feeling inferior and it obviously works. We have opportunities we just aren’t educating our children on how to obtain and be prepared for those opportunities. Something that we need to start doing and stop waiting for the white man or the government to come and save us. But it’s this mindset that’s dangerous to teach to impressionable kids that the whole world is against them and that they are oppressed. We can’t be surprised when they don’t strive for better because we basically told them they can’t.
@sarahc885911 күн бұрын
I’m all for teaching every single aspect of our history, but we spend too much time harping on the past. We can understand that history and then frame/teach it in a way that motivates us and uplift us instead of reminding us of our oppression every time. Additionally we need to be learning about successful black excellence in history. Inventors, scholars, scientists etc. and show them different careers other than sports and entertainment. We were oppressed but we also had amazing stories of innovation and accomplishment.

I think perhaps African culture needs to be considered too. I don’t know about other countries but in parts of Malawi, when an infant is born and the mother dies or leaves, the father is not responsible for the child. If the mother dies, the child just is given to the nearest female relative. It’s just a cultural thing that fathers are not negatively viewed for leaving their children at a young age. This cultural tendency may have reached into modern African American culture in some way 🤷♂

No matter if their parent is the head of a church. Then you have to hope there's no divorce, and still lead the child to be influenced by the other children.
