There is one main reason for Japanese companies to dominate the world in automobile industry, which is, that the Japanese companies PAID their engineers to go on vacations to places like Detroit, Germany, Italy and see their cars being manufactured and also drive them. For some engineers they sponsored them to pursue Masters in those countries, which helped for a soft technology transfer through not making any deals. The entire world was against Japan and their companies after WW2, so they could not make any deals with other companies even if opened their market at that time.

Let me tell you an insider story when maruti 800 was first launched in India , HM bought 2 cars and tried to figure out the engine. The entire R & D team of HM couldn't figure out then they were forced to tie up with Isuzu for their engines coz they were so overwhelmed with the modernity of Japanese engines. My family is involved with the automobile industry in Kolkata so thats how I know this story don't know if it's public or not
@techcloud25102 жыл бұрын
Maruti had tieup with Isuz for sometime to build more powerful engines. I had seen some Isuzu batched MS Zen so no surprise. India never built its own engine, all are imported or taken after company acquisition - like M&M took Daewoo, Tataa took JLR. else so far zero domestic engines. Dont be surprised with this bitter truth. We were always kaamchor.

Interesting. Is any car manufactured in Kolkata currently?
@souvikburman97972 жыл бұрын
@@techcloud2510Your View though partly true but not entirely accurate. Mahindra had their own engines before acquiring Daewoo or sannyong which they did so get some premium segment tech , Tata engines from indica had problems but yeah they did transfer JLR engine tech to modern tata cars hence we can see the refinement in Nexon , Safari , Harrier. Maruti doesn't exist only their service network does with a small share it's all Suzuki ...but Suzuki tying up with ISUZU makes not sense. It's not that the car companies r kamchor as u defined , the industry doesn't work like that most consumers have diff understanding of how stuff works in the car industry. Except for the chassis no car company builts anything inhouse that is also true for the rest of the world...the story is too long to comment here so I will leave at this ....Our companies are not kamchor it just doesn't make economic sense to build a new engine from scratch all the time ...

Yes, what you said is perfectly fine. Ambassador was the only leading car in a row of 3 cars Herald and PAL. Ambassador occupied the lion's share of the market by monopoly with the help of politicians. You had to book an Ambassador car by paying advance I don't remember now how much. May be 1000 or 5000 Rs. No interest. You will get the car after 3 to 5 years. Influential people got faster. The Mark 1 to 4 were just minor changes like mirror, seat, etc. Shameful. We saw a real car when Indira Gandhi ordered a small car factory for her younger son uneducated unemployed Sanjay. In collaboration with Suzuki, a minor motor manufacturer then. I think it was one of the smallest cars Suzuki 800, very cheap. There was still cheaper one Isuzu. Very few purchased it. I am telling the situation outside India. For Indian executives who were pampered with Premier Padmini, an oldie car from PAL, Suzuki was a dream. Very few opted for Herald. Ambassador felt the heat after the eighties. They made Hindustan Contessa. I think Ambassador engine with a bigger better body. Unfortunately it was a mismatch and failure. Soon Rajiv Gandhi opened up foreign collaboration. Ambassador slowly lost its ground. Natural death. Well deserved. Exploitied Indians of 2 generations. Same design. Poor looks. Poor service.

India was literally USSR colony till 1990. As soon as USSR (socialism) collapsed, we also got bankrupt. Then came the American (capitalism) owned IMF to bail us out. But but but they came with strict conditions like adopting capitalism and making economic and foreign policies as per their conditions. So it was not Manmohan Singh who liberalised Indian economy but India was forced by IMF to do so. Any nation which takes loan from IMF literally looses it's sovereignty to USA. Latest example is Pakistan. It's only post 2014 we actually started becoming sovereign nation.

Only after India created its nuclear weapons and large scale support from ussr in the 60s and 70s did India become strong enough to scare Pakistan and restrain China.with that India could move to liberalisation of economy as socialist systems are efficient at heavy machinery, military and industry but lack very much in other sectors like service economy, semiconductors and innovation. But yes the heavy industrial and military backbone created by socialism in india enabled India to smash Pakistan and weaken and created the soil on which liberalization, it industry and innovation prospered. Were it not for socialism, India would have been conquered by radical Islam(ghazwa e hind) and your sisters and large numbers of hindu women would have been traded in the Islamic slave markets of pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. The reason why modi is able to act so boldly is that huge military industrial backbone that was created in 1960s to 1990s by congress. As coal scams, 2g there is enough nepotism of bjp like electoral bond scam, anti democratic farmer Bill created by bjp for adani and Ambani, the crony capitalist control of the press, evm vote rigging. Like how American prosecutors are accusing adani of mass bribery and tax evasion?like how adani and Ambani use law as their puppet. I will agree that congress is a corrupt and useless party but bjp is trying to crush all opposition with the Ed, evm rigging, Mafia like behavior. Thank you so much for your candid observations. Competition motivates Innovation, while monopoly breeds complacency. Apart from Monopoly and Govt. policies, I feel there are many other factors like no incentive or promotion for improvement, lack of highly skilled engineers who could make changes, shortage of capital for modernization. etc. Even today it's an irony that Petrol with additives (HP Power, IOCL XPlus etc.) is treated as luxury product and higher taxes are levied on it. The truth is, by adding additives in Petrol, there is less pollution, less were and tear of the engine and better milage, resulting in direct benefit for the country. But instead of promoting, successive govts are trying to extract more tax from the user and indirectly discouraging use of a superior product.

I was born in 1955 and in my younger days the cars I used were Ambassador, Fiat / Premier, Standard Herald and the Willys / Mahindra jeeps. In bikes I rode the Bullet, Jawa / Yezdi and Rajdoot. Also the Vespa and Lambretta scooters. Basically most of the vehicles were petrol guzzlers, except Mahindra, and unreliable. It's only after Maruti and Hyundai etc. that the market opened up to international brands. Todays youth have hundreds of models to choose from. India wasted four decades before developing the auto industry. That too in a market with a rapidly growing population. I agree with the presentation. The licence Raj created a mindset of mediocrity which continues even today. Very few indigenous brands can compete in quality with developed countries.

Just to add to what I wrote earlier. My comments are not political but I notice lots of Congress baiters and Modi supporters around spreading a false narrative. There are two separate mindsets in Indian business. One is Tata and the other is Birla or desi businessmen. Tata's support employee welfare and venture out in different markets, perform research and development, donate money for a good cause, create institutes of higher learning, build healthcare, and expand business for the greater good of the community. On the opposite side, we have Birlas, who never pay the salaries to their employee for several months, over work their employees by sucking the blood out of them, do not take risk in developing or improving, do not put money in research, and focus only on making profits at the cost of welfare and safety of their employees. Both Ambassador and Premier Padmini were owned by marwaris. Whatever cheap quality technology was handed out by a foreign company to Birla, they accept it, and produce that product for the next 50 years without any investment to improve that product. The original foreign company that provided that old technology must have already moved on and improvised the older version of the product. But Birlas are very happy making money on the product based on old outdated technology. They will never invest money in a new technology unless either competition comes out with a new product or consumers opt for imported newer product. If India were to be run by Birla's, there would have been extreme poverty in India, over-worked and underpaid employees, high malnourishment, people will only live on borrowed money from marwaris with lots of credit, no opportunity for non-marwari's to own business, will never share their wealth for community projects like Tata's, will never donate, and will remain economically under-developed. India would be doomed under Indian businessman or Marwari rule. They would in fact break down and the sell the country by each state to the highest bidders. Of course, there are exceptions to everything. Some marwari businessmen may be providing better compensation to their employees and donate money for a good cause. But majority of Indian businessmen are only there to take your money from your pocket, but give very little in return. Once a tv reporter asked this question to JRD Tata on tv, "Why don't you build temples like Birlas do?". His response, "I built Tata Cancer Research Center, and other hospitals to serve those cannot afford treatment". In our Santaa Dharma, serving people and doing Seva is the "param dharma". But majority of our Indian businessmen are totally ignorant. Ambani's are marginally better than Birlas, but they are crooks nevertheless. Now we have Gautam Adani, another fraud in the making. I have personally interviewed employees from Tata's in Jamshedpur and Birla's in Calcutta. Employees working for the Tata companies are happy and satisfied. But employees working for Birla's are miserable and complained that they never get paid on time. Tata's get blessings from their employees. Whereas Birla employees shower curses on the Birla family. Thanks to Tata's. We have Steel industries, Automobiles, Education institutes such as IISc in Bangalore, TFIR, Airline industry, TISS, Tata Cancer Research Center, Hospitals, and more.They are a devine blessing to India. Tata's are an asset of India. Then we have the Ambani's, Birlas, and rest of the rotten businessmen, who are the blood suckers, and they selfishly only look for profit everywhere, at the cost of community development. If we consider Tata's as the devata, of Gods of the world, then .... Ambani's, Birlas and majority of the desi businessmen are the asuras or rakshasas of the world. This is no offense to any particular business community. I have lots of good marwari friends and those who do business, who grudgingly agree with the above theory.

Among most charitable personalities this year by hurun, it's Adani and Shiv Nadar of HCL. And most of the charity that Tata does is just to reduce the tax. In India you don't get taxed on charity money. Do tell me a hospital run by Tata where the hospitalization is free. I'll just visit that hospital. 😂

@@KejriwalBhakt My understanding from one of the TCS employee was that TCS is called as Tamil Consulting Services, as people of Tamil origins have occupied the positions pushed out all non-Tamilians out of jobs. That is one of the reasons why TCS may be having issues. We just cannot compare, Tata's with Amani's, Birla's, and Adani's of the world. Tata is highly regarded around the world. I met one employee from Ukraine who worked for a Birla company in his home country, and he left the company after three months because they never paid his salary. The reason given was that the transfer of salary from India is taking time to get approved by the Reserve Bank of India. That was nonsense, as the from sales was collected in the home country. Birla's not have bad name is India, but even internationally they have a tarnished their image. Maybe things have improved. Adani seems nice, but I have a strong feeling, he will take a large loan from the Indian government, default, and then abscond to foreign land, like that businessman Modi, and Kingfisher guy. Today, only three groups of business can be trusted. Tata's, government of India, and a few well-known publicly traded companies. Most of the private Indian companies are known for three things: not paying salary to their employees on time, not following labor laws, and not providing safety to their employees. Because all these three factors cost more money. These low category Indian businessmen are cheap, do not take risk, and cut corners.

Ambassador was dominant in Calcutta and fait was dominant in bombay market. Ambassador tried to enter into bombay market by sending its product by air as calcutta and bombay were not adequatly connected by road. We as automotive enthusiasts "love" our cars (sometimes too much) to not be able to see them for what they are and have always been: transportation technology. So even though I love my Amby I must admit that the car was never as good as it could have been, especially in the later stages of its life. Bhai, Ambassador ke backseat ka royal feeling aaj bhi mujhe koi gadi se nahi mila. Aur woh darwaja kaise bhi bandh karo, kuch nahi hota tha. We had a maruti 800 back in 90s, it was like a matchbox. Ek gai ka bacchra side se lag gaya toh darwaja aadha ho gaya tha ekbaar. Compared to it, Ambassador was like a tank.

Thank u for the vdo, it is well researched and well made on HM, however u should hve connected the reality of Maruti Suzuki also as to who owned it and bought it to Indian Auto Market.

Nehruvian galat economy has wrecked havoc with Indias and having no other option Manmohon Singh was forced to open up economy under compulsion but Congis turned it as their credit instead of taking the blame.
