Dave - It was me (Mark Rowell, fa18mhr aka KC6BPH) who asked the question during your pod cast that prompted this topic and I hope other hams avail themselves of your explanation. I was an electronic technician in the Navy so I am able to grasp many technical ham subjects without too much difficulty, but this is not one of them. Some topic really need your interpretation, taking a complex, highly technical subject and boiling it down to simpler language that everyone can understand. That is your forte and I thank you for doing this for all of us. 73

Thanks for the information David, I’m not ham but love talking on 11 meters, I know I know another one of those cb guys, I really am learning as much as I can and maybe someday will be a ham, I enjoy talking on 11 meters and try to have my station clean and clear, not your typical splatter box here, cb has been a blast and will always be, I’m learning slowly and will always try my best to be a good clean station out there on the bands, thank you again for the information and help, I learn a lot watching others demonstrate their awesomeness 😎😎😎😎😎

Good explanation of something I've been wondering about lately. Now a little insite on predicting propagation would help me. On a side note I work in the power industry. The grid could be quite vulnerable to a gmd. It induces dc currents in high voltage transformers, more so in wye delta configurations i believe, causing issues with with reactive power. Its a complex topic with research still being done.

Dave- why are some bands propagating better at night? This video gave me two ideas and I wonder if you have any comments. 1.) As the earth rotates within the distorted geomagnetic field (caused by solar wind) it seems the ionosphere would be "larger" on the back side (night side). That is, greater distance between the E and F layers, contributing to wider range of frequencies falling within the MUF. 2.) If we place an X on earth and follow through a 24h cycle, the sun excites the ionosphere during the daylight hours, reaching its greatest excitation at the end of the day. As location X rotates into night, the ionosphere remains in its excited state for hours until its again depleted at the end of the night. This is all very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

The Carrington Event hit the US too. But it is now estimated to be way less powerful than a documented previous event, before we had so many longlines. As for the grid being built to withstand it...don't hold your breath, most of the grid isn't, as far as I've heard. And it can't be replaced with off-the-shelf parts. GPS and satcoms can only carry so much shielding, and many things (ranging from the stock market to internet security) besides lost drivers depend on GPS.

First I heard of a magnetic storm was in the old Star Trek TOS (The Original Series) and thought back then that it was just something that a writer dreamed up for a plot line.

Just tell me, how to derive mean of K-Index along observatoriums please.... And how to classify K-Index and A-Index so that these indices can describe how intense solar storm impact to our magnetic field (magnetosphere). My thesis was indeed are about these K-Index.... Please help me...

Nice video Dave. I use spaceweather.com as a source of this information. As I type this, the sunspot number is 84, the highest I've seen in quite some time. Hopefully, we'll get a good cycle for HF. 73 KB3JC

Nicely done sir. Complicated subject simplified for us "normal" folks. For up to date numbers, I like to see www.hamqsl.com/solar3.html#hfprop and for weekly vids on what it going on, I really like to watch Dr. Tamitha Skov, aka, the Space Weather Woman. See kzbin.info for her latest video. She also has daily updates, just go to her regular web site. Many others are available, but these should get you started. Many full feature ham logging programs also have built-in propagation components.

I hear the words Weird Roughly Correlated Are tightly bound together but not real strongly I wonder if you give any thought to becoming a democrat politician perhaps ? Lastly there is not need for any concern. As to do with Major Solar Storms They have fixed that now :) I reckon Build Back Better really happened while I was asleep
