Penning down lyric on tune is not as old as 15 or 20 years. It is about 70 years old tradition set by Shanker-Jaikishan. Other music composers except Ravi also followed this trend.

Medley k liye sabse important scale hota hai. For the fundamental part, scale ya to same hona h, ya phr relative. Advanced tarike me bola jaaye to, agar same ya relative scale nahi hai, to 1 ya 3 semitone difference carry kar sakte hain.

You did not say anything technical about music. Secondly, there had been some A class music composers who didn't compromise with the melody on director's view. They also had final say on who should sing the song. Composers like SJ, SDB, OPN were very stubborn. Their say was final.
