In the 2000's and early 2010's, Sony's cameras were TERRIBLE. They were SO FAR behind Canon and Nikon that it seemed impossible for them to catch up... but, they did catch up around 2018, and in 2019 Sony solidly surpassed the Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras. HOW DID THEY DO IT?! I researched it and the answers are fascinating and directly relatable to your personal life and business.

This really sounds like the Intel vs AMD that played out recently Intel slacking off cause they dominated the market for years, AMD comes up with the brilliant Ryzen range, and suddenly now there's a hell of a lot of competition, which is in the end an absolute win for us consumers

Almost but they still just jump each other after a few years as they are a duopoly. AMD had a lot of catching up to do. This would be more like intel seeing nvidia and amd slacking on GPU upgrades and smashing it with something 2x more powerful.

1. A-mount cameras were behind in some areas, but were ahead in others (fast AF in live view, resolution). If they had been terrible across the board, nobody would care about Sony now 2. Sony a6000 and a6300 are generally better than you presented in your videos, especially if you put them against similarly priced dslrs - that's why people were sceptical about your videos on a6000 series of cameras. The problem was that at that time Sony didn't have a flagship e mount camera, a6000 was competing with d5300 really and competed successfully, not with Nikon d7200 or Canon 7D. 3. Sony cameras, even older models made it easier for photographers to take pictures. The whole concept of evf, fast af in live view, tilting screen when some dslrs had still fixed screen was actually a big deal - that's the reason I could never switch back to my Nikon d7200. 4. Even if early e mount cameras had some flaws, people could see the potential in the new technology - for example no front focus/back focus hassle. So it's not only about business strategy or reaching out to influencers. Even early Sony a mount and e mount cameras were quality products and people saw it.

Sony only needs to buy/hire a Lens company and figure out a way to make the most out of lens+sensor vibration reduction so raven in a shaky hand you can get amazing low light photographs + lower lens prices. (But first after they innovate in the new lens they should really FOCUS on the active/live FOCUS, where all cameras fall flat compared to DSLR heaven DSLR themselves can not focus in live view and most of the time you use the mirror tried and true focusing)

Here's what Sony really needs... Or can actually do with no doubt cut off the market again with the following... A 1.25x 32mpx sensor in apsc body, outsourced processing unit eg helio x20/x27 decacore CPU with a 4gb ram buffer(or 1gb 4086bit HBM stacked memory(AMD super graphics ram)), this would allow you to write 300mbs or 600mbs UHS 2 raid 0 configuration SD cards with a constant 12fps lagless write buffer and 72fps burst mode with a 3 second write speed. 3.2mill dot and the ability to record full 8k at 60fps(potentially 120+fps). + Sony stop using camera batteries, they suck and you know it, give us a real camera able to fit easy 2x Sony VTC 2500mA (5000mA total) battery design... One of the most reliable batteries of all time, no production line cost for weird design batteries anymore and of course at as little as £5 a battery Come on Sony, this tech has been out as long as 2014, and I can state the production of such a unit would cost a buyer no more than £2000 a unit. At 2:30 he implies that Sony when bought Minolta-Konica in 2006, it produced right away the SLT cameras. Actually Sony initially produced a-mount SLR cameras. The Sony SLT cameras were introduced in 2010. The first SONY mirrorless e-mount cameras were introduced in 2010 too. So Sony betted in too technologies at the same time. The SLT cameras for owners of α-mount lenses and the e-mount cameras for those interested in the new trend of digital mirrorless technology. Sony didn't produced the first APS-C digital mirrorless camera as many believe. Samsung had succeeded that a few months before. But Sony was more successful and after three years in 2003 it introduced the groundbreaking series of α7 full frame mirrorless cameras. What I appreciate more with Sony is that it has allowed, common amateurs like me to purchase a new digital full frame camera body for around 750€ at a time when the price of all other new full frame mirrorless camera bodies was around 1500€. Sony was and is a very good manufacturer of really professional videocameras. Sony had a great experience from 70's to early 2000 with lens optics and was and is collaborating with the fabulous Zeiss. Sony until 2006 was producing photographic cameras for the common amateurs photographers. Most of the digital Mavica cameras were based on the digital image sensors of the Sony digital videocameras. Nowadays it seems ridiculous but the use of a floppy drive in a digital videocamera was very very convenient for amateurs. After all most digital photos had a resolution of 640 X 480 pixels which was adequate for webpages and emails. A packet of ten cheap convenient floppy disks wasn't so large or heavy. It could purchased everywhere in the world and could store hundreds of photos. The Sony cameras we see after 2006 are actually Minolta-Konica cameras. The cameras names a6 and a9 or the GM name of Sony lenses aren't accidental. Minolta was producing among others the excellent α6 and α9 film a-mount SLR cameras and the best of Minolta lenses were the G Gold series lenses. The best Minolta cameras had inscription in G gold color and the top Minolta lenses weren't just G but GM Gold Master. Thirteen years have passed since the purchase of Minolta Konica in 2006 and I bet that most scientists of Minolta-Konica are still working for Sony.

A few remarks: 1. Sony did make a lot of DSLRs, both APS-C and Full Frame. And as you correctly stated, they were not succesful in threatening either Nikon or Canon. 2. Your statement that SLT cameras were crap are a little over the top. The SLT cameras were at the time they were realease the only way to have the fast AF of a DSLR, combined with continuous live view. The performance of the AF of mirrorless cameras was still lagging far behind. When I got into photogtaphy, I did this with a Konica-Minolta DiMAGE A2. I never really used a film camera (other than compacts for snap shots); so I went straight into the digital age. At some point somebody with a Nikon DSLR asked me to take some photos with his camera. Then I found out that a DSLR had no continuous live preview and live histogram. With my A2, I relied a lot on this, as I used M mode a lot. In my opinion, this was a big step backwards when using a DSLR. So I never got one, and kept shooting with the A2. Then Sony released the first SLT: SLR performance but with live preview etc. I did not hesitate and got the A55, and four years later, the A77II. The latter is a great camera, and in no way really inferior to its peers from Nikon or Canon. A friend of mine uses a Canon 80D, and the A77II is as capable as this counterpart from Canon. Last but not least: Remember the Sony R1? A bridge camera with a splendid Zeiss lens and an APS-C sensor inside, at a time when people said that this could not be done: to have a camera based on live view with EVF using an APS-C sensor?

Sony came up in 2012 with the a77 and a99 - changed everything. Let's also not forget the sacrifice of Minolta. They died so that Sony cameras would live. To understand Sony's new cameras, you have to understand the headway Minolta made since the 90's. They were always #3, the underdog. Now Sony has carried the torch to run head to head with CaNikon. Personally, I can't stand Canon - the ergonomics were non-existent up until maybe 5 years ago, and still is lacking. Nikon is a good balance. But as an event photographer, nothing beat using a Minolta camera. The ergonomics were so well done that you could change everything in the dark and not have to move away from the eye piece. I caught a lot of shots that would have been lost to a CaNikon solution. Yes yes, Canon wins on glass and Nikon on fidelity. Each has its place. But no one camera is a cure-all. We all have our favorites.

Sony is a keiretsu; international conglomerate modeled after the family based zaibatsu conglomerates busted up after WW2. Why that matters is they are a larger company with more resources than companies like Canon and Nikon. If they want to, they can squeeze smaller companies to the periphery (or insolvency) through pricing alone. This is why Atari (falsely) accused Sony of product dumping when the price of the original PS1 was revealed at a then industry shaking $299. Sony also squeezed out Sega, which was competing at $399. The $1999 A7iii similarly put the squeeze on Canon and Nikon, altering consumer perception of what $1999 buys, and again with the A7Riv altering perception of what $3,500 should buy. When there is a deficit in tech levels of comparable or competing products, the larger conglomerates can head hunt R&D talent from competitors (or simply buy companies with their staff and IPs), allowing them to close the tech gap. The prescience of Sony was in seeing the eventual obsolescence of the pentaprism/pentamirror viewfinder. The logistics of being a consumer tech keiretsu with access to parallel technologies relevant to the consumer/pro camera market is what tied R&D, production cost, and pricing into the final competing products.

All you said above is true, but that's the last time Sony when Sony had that maverick President when Playstation was launched. Since then, Sony had nothing but organizational struggles, fiefdom politics, and in may divisions, still harboring fantasies of their yesteryears. The fact that the camera division did so well against this backdrop all the more makes this even more shocking. Just look to their phone division, and you'll see what I mean. Then they sold their PC division, their TVs are languishing, and they have no significant new products. Canon itself is also zaibatsu, and if they want they can release a loss leader too.
@alphaxfang
@alphaxfang 5 жыл бұрын
But sony lens are pricey... I don't think they do the dumping technique... They just sell body for small profit margin and sell lens on higher margin to cover the body cost... Just like canon printer price and their ink price...
@greenmedic88
@greenmedic88 5 жыл бұрын
They are; they recognize for every camera body they sell, that's a potential sale of multiple lenses down the road. Even better, a potential customer within the lens mount ecosystem who will eventually update camera bodies. This is not the same as the oft quoted "razor blade model" that remains in use by the cheap consumer grade printer market. Incidentally, undercutting the competition is not product dumping; that's illegal. But a company can shave profit margins in the interest of making their product a more perceived value proposition, while making the competition look overpriced for what it offers in comparison. In other words, don't cut features to try to up sell consumers in the interest of preserving sales of other product lines.
@CheeseOnEverything
@CheeseOnEverything 5 жыл бұрын
This has always been Sony's model, to come out with guns blazing on specs and nothing more. But this is all for short term gains, hence why none of Sony's products do well in the long run. Canon and Nikon have been in the industry for so long, that they can see the problem of the mirrorless system hence why they brought out the bigger mounts which Sony have failed to foresee. Once the big two come out with an array of new lenses that Sony cant deliver, they're just going to be left in the dust again. Sony is only playing catch up to Canon's EF and EF-s lineup and anyone in photography knows, glass is key.

You had me up to the point where you said that Sony A-mount, SLT cameras were no good! I couldn't watch any more after that untrue assertion (to put it nicely)! I owned and enjoyed shooting: A58; A65; A77ii; A99; and A99ii. Now I shoot Sony mirrorless (A9 & A6500) but whenever I see an A99 or A99ii on sale for a reasonable price I have to restrain myself from buying! And there were so many great A-mount lenses!! I would still use the Sony-Zeiss 1.8/135 (one of the best 135's ever made) if it had an SSM motor!

The only weakness of A mount cameras was that they gathered less light because of semi translucent mirror so there was more noise in the photos. But the difference between A mount and Canon/Nikon wasn't as significant as some people say in real life shooting. And you got fast AF in live view, fast overall performance, a lot of frames per second, exceptional resolution, good colors and a lot of cheap decent Minolta lenses together with high-quality Sony and Zeiss lenses.

There is a big difference between Sony and the other two brands you mention (Nikon specificaly, but to a lesser degree for Canon also)... Sony has a very wide range of consumer products where they earn their money with. Unlike Nikon (and to a lesser degree Canon) they are not primarily dependent upon their camera and lens sales to stay in business. Sony could afford to experiment with new technology that (at first) didn't work (well), becuase they earned enough money with other consumer products. But if you're a company that is earning money almost solely from your camera and lens sales, you cannot afford to bring gear to the market that doesn't work good (enough) for professionals that have to rely on their gear for getting their shots. So lesson number would be: Diversify and do not specialize to make just a limited type op products.

Mark Taylor I may have been harsh but the truth is Nikon wasn’t listening to customers and neither was Canon. I waited for Nikon to release more aps-c prime lenses but they never did. Neither company put in body stabilization in their bodies. Without Sony we never would have an EVF, in body stabilization, no mirror box, eye focus and full sensor focus points. The mirrorless cameras feel far better in the hands than the DSLRs. Nikon and Canon had decades of experience and should have been the ones reinventing the future but as Tony correctly pointed out, they rested on their laurels.

@@touringband it's not wishing bad on Canon or Nikon.. The consumers have been screaming what they want and need in their professional gear.. and Canon/Nikon but more so Canon has been nerfing the upgraded models while still charging a premium. They very well could give the consumer what they want at a competitive price.. yet they consistently give only marginal upgrades while their competition is listening and delivering. So getting what they deserve isn't a desire for them to fail and leave the market. It's a desire for them to finally give the customers what they need.. not years too late. For instance. The 90D should have been what they gave us 2-3yrs ago.. not in 2019. The M6 mkii I hate what they did with the hot shoe using that to place the viewfinder which makes it unusable for me. I'm confident that both the 90D and M6mkii will produce great pics.. but both are lacking things I want in a camera. We want Sony to kick their ass enough to where Canon will finally listen to us.. And Stop holding back when they release their cameras. Or their customers will go to the company that actually listens to their needs and does their best to deliver. Which each release model getting better.

Great thought provoking content. However I wonder did Sony actually move the goal posts or did they perform a slight of hand? They managed to get people to look at what they were doing better (more autofocus points, higher megapixels, better focusing with eye AF and tracking AF) instead of what they continue to be behind on (menu system, touch screen LCD, and until recently ergonomics and tactile experience). So there are areas where Sony is still playing catch up while defining a new set of goals for Canon and Nikon to catch up on. So in that sense everyone is playing catch up. In the mean time I will probably stay with my Canon T6i until at least the Sony A7 IV (yes that is without the R) is released. The ergonomics hold me back from the A7 III. I find that renting lenses with the right focal lengths and best sharpness for a few special occasions when I need high quality pictures works for now. I do wish for better focusing system at times. My next camera will be a TBD full frame mirrorless. Once the Sony A7 IV is released the Canon RF and Nikon Z systems will have had a chance to show how quickly they can close some of the gaps especially with firmware releases. Also by that time DxO Mark should have evaluated most of the trinity lenses in the new RF and Z systems to see who has potentially the better glass and go through the Sophie's choice of sharpness vs chromatic aberration vs whatever other lens property may be more important to you. Once the A7 IV is out, then it will be rent a few bodies and comparable lenses and see what works best for my needs before making the full frame mirrorless purchase. Full disclaimer my father prefers Nikon, my mother had a Cannon, and I have owned both Canon and Nikon digital cameras, and a Canon ILC, and I hear the siren call of Sony.

We could learn to be kinder toward other races of humans that way. Focus on what the darker guy is doing better at instead of what the white person is deluded into thinking he is bad at. They weren’t professional photography cameras, put in the correct context they were a tool for people who had to take digital pictures. They were good for basic product images, pictures for business reports, pictures for emails about job completion status, etc etc at a time when nearly every single computer had a floppy drive instead of USB and when some or most cameras connected via serial connections and had to have drivers a Sony floppy camera you could pull up the pictures on virtually any computer as long as it had a pretty universal floppy drive.

Nice podcast, but I am uneasy about dividing people into nerds and professionals. How about innovators and refiners? An innovator wants to make new products using new tools while a refiner wants to make the same products better using refined versions of the same tools. For serious photographers the products are commercial photographs or successful artwork. The tools are techniques like composition as well as hardware like cameras. A traditional landscape photographer wants to keep taking gradually improved images of gradually ever nicer mountains with perhaps slightly refined rules of composition. An innovator always chafes at what they consider constraints imposed by limited tools and methods. Given a new camera they immediately start to think about new kinds of pictures they could take. How about landscapes taken at all times of the day or even late into the evening? How about looking at a display that combines the scene to be captured with data such as a histogram? Also, given a new tool, innovators can envision a series of even better tools to come in future years. I think the desire of innovators to do new things in new ways is why they flocked to Sony’s crappy but innovative mirrorless cameras. In them, they saw a possible future that they wanted to explore. Refiners were not impressed with the new cameras since they were demonstrably worse at being DSLRs than real DSLRs. The world needs both innovators and refiners.

Anybody who has done photography long term would have had to love the Fuji films of the past and to have them today in digital form is just terrific. Fuji also makes well rounded cameras that would appeal to many people and are really first movers in the current pixel wars. So Fuji is a company that will take risks and leapfrog the competition if they see an opening. Go Fuji yay yay yay!!

Landscope 360 There is that, but I changed from a Nikon to Sony A mount and never looked back at DSLR’s. Went forward with mirrorless, not Sony, and now, many years later back to Sony mirrorless. As it happens I used the A mount SLT camera yesterday and it worked as sweetly as ever, contrary to the info in this video. It made the Nikon seem like last century technology when I got it, and the images at least are as good today as ever. If you had one and didn’t get on with it, hey, what do I care. Obviously many preferred other equipment and criticise from near zero experience of the equipment discussed and use all kind of negative projections to criticise other’s views and choices. They think that it makes them sound clever when it actually makes them sound childish and petty.

@@hedydd2 I too changed, but from Canon to Sony. Once I used A mount there was no looking back. Feel instantly in love with the live view, and it shoots 12fps which still can't be touched today at the price point. Not to mention 24mp in 2011. I've finally moved over to E mount only because I feel like Sony is abandoning A mount, and because the Sony a7riii was the first emount I thought worthy of making that change for. I urge anyone to compare the Sony A99ii vs the Nikon D850 and you will be very surprised on how close they are. Not to mention the A77 vs pretty much anything at that price point. Again, not to sound like a Sony fan boy, but my A77 is still taking sharp crisp images after almost 10 years of use.

Please also raise the issue of alot of shutter of A7iii been broken, if it needs a recall as its not good for camera costs like 2.2k EUR and you end up a broken shutter.

First DSLR I bought for myself was a Sony, and that was maybe 8 years ago now? Still have it, still shoots fine, no issues. I mostly went with Sony because I had some old Minolta lenses that would fit onto it. But I remember a few people on an old photo forum ribbing me a bit for not getting a Nikon or Canon. Now today when I'm thinking of getting a new camera it seems like I'll be choosing between Sony and Fuji. I haven't even thought about Nikon or Canon since I'm looking at mirrorless. Though, my favorite camera by far has been my little Richo GR II.

Don't know what's wrong with the a6300. Have been using it for 1.5 years now of which 7 months I spent traveling, taking over 26'000 photos. The AF always did a great job (except for astro photography), also in video it tracked fast and precisely but still naturally smooth. I never had it overheat, only freze a few times (at -30°C) And 2 batteries got me thru a week of shooting as long as I turned the camera off once I got the shot. It may not be the best camera but at about 880$ including the kit lens when I bought it in spring 2018 it was great value and I still love to shoot with it. The only things which annoy me: The menu, the missing timelapse feature and the missing headphone jack to check the sound when recording videos.

Great video and content! For film and DSLRs, Canon was always my choice. But with digital midrange and compacts, Sony's were almost always in my bag, with the exception of the Canon S95, the photographers carry camera, and the Fujifilm X10. DSC-F828 from 2003, with 8.0 megapixels, 28-200 mm optical zoom, and 2/3-inch sensor took incredible images. That lens was stuff of legends.

I sold all of my L Glass and switched to Sony about a month ago. Best decision I've ever made. Before the switch I wasn't aware of how much sharper Sony glass was and it still blows my mind. I also can't believe that with the Sony 95% of my shots nail focus. I was worried about the AF when switching but am now blown away by the A7III compared to my 5DIV

When I had Canon 30d ...when i saw Sony SLT...i said to my friends buy Sony ...on that time SLT had so many nice features ...maybe photos weren’t best but features on sony cameras where superb. I told all my Canon and Nikon friend that they should watch sony cameras because they will be better soon then other cameras....it took them a wile but I stand by what i said back then. Sony did what iPhone did to phone market. Well done Sony...keep innovating!

Hi Tony Superb vid. More than most of your vids this time I felt 99% agreement and that you really "spoke to me". You are right about confirmation bias. We all suffer. I try hard to seek objective expert opinion and keep an open mind. Even so it's not easy and I do occasionally make bad choices. I'm a 40 year photo nut, towards the 'geekier' end of spectrum but value quality, originality and the 'photo art' aspect more than the gear. To me a camera is just a tool I use to pursue one of my more important life hobbies. I also have a business background in marketing and was a very brand loyal Nikon user for 28 years owning multiple bodies and lenses. I actively chose not to be a professional photographer - too hard to make serious money vs. my regular day job. I shoot for fun but try to work professionally and to the highest level my skill, funds and hard won experience can sustain. Initially I rejected the many overtures by Sony. Could see no reason to change until their 3rd Alpha generation which they also appeared to be supporting with top quality GM glass. I waited in keen anticipation after Z mount hype. I was underwhelmed by Nikon's Z7 and 'sluggish' lens roadmap. In summary I switched to Sony late last year, after the lackluster Z7 launch. Sold 4 bodies, 15 lenses. No regrets. Sony still isn't perfect but they do seem to better listen. Nikon never heard my many pleas. Key life lesson. Understand the needs of your most committed users.
