Chapter 4 feedback: Sony also made themselves a powerhouse in the motion picture industry when they bought Columbia Pictures and Tri-Star Pictures in 1987 = The acquisition cost Sony $4.9 billion ($3.55 billion for shares and $1.4 billion of long-term debt). Another feedback was Sony's partnership with Ericsson in the mobile-phone market and for a time before the smartphone era, they topped the selling markets with the Sony-Ericsson branded Walkman phones.

12:05 Ok first mistake, while Betamax failed in the public eye, Sony reengineered it for broadcasting distribution, and called it betacam, it was used to record professional broadcast camcorders and masters of shows. Considering tape wasn't fully retired from broadcasting workflows until 2014 , I would say that it was more successful than VHS as it became an industry standard and lasted a decade longer.
@TedKeyboardify17 күн бұрын
Plus Betamax was also longer than VHS (900 vs 240 minutes iirc). VHS won because of porn, thats it. Philips allowed porn to be distributed on VHS but Sony refused, which ultimately cost them.
@Jimbob_Offical17 күн бұрын
@ they won by literally using smut. But my point is that Betamax technically lasted longer.
@filipesousa602917 күн бұрын
@@TedKeyboardifyThe VHS is from Jvc, not Philips
@Awton17 күн бұрын
@@TedKeyboardify There is plenty of porn on betamax. This is just rumors. It was because they didn't want to sell the rights to make betamax machines to anyone else so they became expensive to buy. VHS was not as expensive to buy because a lot of companies were making vhs machines. Since more people had VHS machines at home, most movies would only be released for VHS.

Great video. Thanks a lot! Just adding up: The Failure in Betamax vs VHS war led Sony to interest in controlling Intellectual Property by using the Sony Pictures and Sony Music. Whe the next big Video war begun (Blu-ray vs HD DVD) Sony controlled a lot of movies releases and they only released Sony Pictures catalog on Blu-Ray. They also sold the Blu-Ray devices with some loss (Like the PS3) but eventually they won the HD Video Disc format war because of this strategy.
