I love how horror movies are becoming more and more focused on the sound of it, it doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares. Jump scared are welcome but I feel as if many movies and franchises are using them every chance they get. Sometimes a suspenseful moment where you are waiting, sitting on bated breath, for the jump scare, only for it not to happen. In my opinion, those moments are better then any. And I feel as if sound adds more feel to if you are really in the scene itself.

One of my favorite horror movies of all time, "It Follows", doesn't rely on jump scares at all, but it has, IIRC, two of them. The movie relies so heavily on suspense and panic that the two jump-scare moments really surprise you. I was just watching the movie for the third or fourth time a couple nights ago and both jump-scares legitimately startled me. And the rest of the movie is even better.

Foley artists and foley editors deserve more recognition for evoking emotional responses from an audience…at times, more so than actors. The range of conscious and subconscious influence often goes unrecognized by the audience. Beneath conscious recognition, that affect is an essential part of immersing the audience into the film.

That's what they were referring to. Honestly, a lot of the subtlety just gets lost for 99% of people... I have pretty great headphones and still could barely make out the chimes and stuff if I focused hard. I think they got a bit carry away with their expensive Hollywood sound system and forgot that no one but millionaires own that kind of setup. Most of us are watching the movie on a plain tv, a laptop and earbuds or a basic soundbar. A small percentage of us have headphones over 200$ or decent surround sound, even fewer have true audiophile gear. It's not your fault...

this was a cool video that was damaged by how often all the subtle sound stuff being talked about was being talked over by the narrator. they be like, listen to the sounds being made here, are you listening? good, next... but they never really gave time to HEAR the sounds. the video would have been much better with a little more breathing room for the sound. often youd get just the tiniest sliver of the sound you are listening to before the narrator jumps in again completely overpowering the sounds you are supposed to be listening to. it should have left more time for the sounds themselves. i dont want to WATCH the foley artist make the sound, i want to LISTEN to the foley artist make the sound! a 12-15 minute video would have been just as easy to watch as a 10 minute one and would have left more time for the actual sound, which was the whole point of the video.

Don't get me wrong, foley is always going to be fascinating. However, this highlighted style of sound design, specifically for horror movies, is one of the main reasons why everyone I know doesn't take Blumhouse/modern horror projects seriously. When everything is shot like a domestic thriller/drama, a phone that sounds like a jackhammer or a house that silences like it's in a vacuum doesn't sound suspenseful or horrifying; it just sounds funny

I wish I had access to all this stuff when I took a semester of post-production audio sweetening back in college in the ‘80s. We had to create all our foley sounds from scratch in an empty studio. Footsteps and wind were easy. Replicating the sound of someone climbing a chain-link fence isn’t easy when you don’t have a chain-link fence to use.

True for sounds that tricks your mind into believing what you see. I work as a painter and at 9:51 dropping paint doesn’t sound that «watery» but i know it’s for the illusion. If the sounds of a foley artist are done right we don´t notice... that’s why their work is not appreciated for its fair value, unfortunately.

Is this just for horror movies or for all of them? Genuinely asking. I think this is amazing, how do you even get into this field?

I kinda like the stock drain sound. Imagine as the drain is still making sound and just as it is about to peter out she gets grabbed. Your focused on the drain sound and so it's more shocking.

In movies when all sounds stop; it means something or someone is gonna pop on your screen. Like jumpscares. I love and hate that at the same time

On gaming, you might be interested in The Obra Dinn. It's this mystery game in which you could see the exact moment when someone dies. They have these cool radio-drama like segments that does good squeamish body sounds for many unpleasant deaths.

Word of advice, if you ever need to use fireworks muted, just eat a pickle slowly. Same strandy firecracker background sound. Like at the end of the purge or something with a happy carnival lighting a canvas in the background with a dead main character on the floor offsetting the scene.

I really liked Silent Hill movie's sound design. Not necessarily all the banging and loud sounds, but the more subtle ambience.

The first one, the stock sound seemed better. The squeak on off the faucet and than do the suspense. Now that’s better instead of the cliche cutting out completely

I think horror video games are the same way. I've been playing the resident evil 2 remake, and the sounds can be butt clinching. Hearing Mr. X's footsteps on the floor above you in the police station is nerve wracking.
