South Park is likely the most offensive and bigoted show on the planet. I also find it probably the funniest, and this ep may be at the top. That family is so refreshingly cheesy and Utah-Mormon. I'd also recommend the movies "Suits on the Loose", "The Best Two Years", "Baptists at Our Barbecue" and "Mobsters & Mormon". Some of them may require some knowledge of Mormon lingo, but they're good movies to show someone we don't want to be seen as too stiff. The gold plates contained the history of the ancestors of who would be the first members of the Mormon church, not their commandments per se. We still believe in the 10 commandments as they are in the Bible. There is no magic in the underwear, sadly. 2:43 The vibe I get from some people online when they hear I'm a Mormon. We don't expect anyone to know what Mormonism is, though most people I've asked have heard the name, so I find it weird they'd laugh when Stan asked what the Book of Mormon is, let alone Joseph Smith. I guess that's the Utah-Mormon as well? Every member of the other churches hated Joseph for claiming he had seen God and Christ, and the only times the pastors and prists labeled him 'prophet' was in disdain, so this seems right up SP's alley to bend the accuracy. 9:03 It says in the Bible, wherein Joseph got the idea to pray about which religion was the "right one", that one should pray "in secret". The Bible is full of vague language like that, though we figure it means you should pray somewhere you can focus solely on the prayer without distractions, not that nobody can know you're praying. 9:13 Technically, they said he would help restore Christ's original church as it was during the years of his ministry (doctrinally), but details, schmetails. 10:27 It is. It's all contained in the Book of Mormon. Mormon was Moroni's father, who gathered all the stuff everyone had written down as their history and buried it in the ground. Kind of unfair he got all credit for the book, but, apparently, Joseph was told to name it such when publishing it. 10:48 No. He visited a few times as recorded in the book. 11:00 There was the war of all wars until there were just a handful of people left. God had turned them red long before that, so it wasn't because of this. The book says he put "a mark" on them but as it also says he turned their skin dark in addition, it's unclear whether that was the mark. 11:18 Not offended, man. By all means, watch it. I do. South Park isn't the greeatest of sources, thoigh, so maybe ask a Mormon who DOES know about their faith? Then again, I don't blame people for wanting to get their info from something that makes them laugh as well. 16:42 One thing Mormonism believes is only people who commit the unforgivable sin will go to "hell", which we believe to be more a state of regret more than a geographical place. The unforgivable sin, how I've been explained it, is denying the holy spirit's influence when it's worked with you to such a degree that denying that reality would be like denying your own existence. Because God loves us, and because every person is different, we believe he has prepared several places we can live after death. We'll be sorted according to how well we did in life, though even the "worst" place will be unfathomably better than the best kind of life on earth. I can only speak for myself when I say I'm never out to convert people. I thought that was our job when I went on a mission, but over time I realized we're only messengers out to inform people who are looking for it. Polygami officially ended in 1890. Still funny to hear that's the one thing people seem to know us by. In a strange way, I appreciate it. 18:33 Not "new", but yes, that's what it's called. Not "another" as in "forget the Bible, read me instead" - we absolutely believe in the Bible and believe the books, when in agreement, support our faith - but as in "yes, it's true". A testament in this case is a witness. 20:37 Oh, it can get pretty deep, at least seemingly for people who don't know much about it. 22:10 I swear that's not an official custom nor Mormon ritual of any kind. 26:08 You're allowed to say you think it's dumb, but I, for one, appreciate you trying to not sound like a dick. I mean, truth can be stranger than fiction :P 26:47 Of course the BoM doesn't say that the Garden of Eden is in Jackson, Missouri, but there's been done a lot of research and archeological digging in both places from the Bible and the BoM, and some findings suggest (may have changed, as this episode aired a long time ago) that the Garden may have been in Jackson, Missouri. Small but important detail to the "lost pages" story: Lucy Harris begged Martin to see the pages for days. Martin had asked Joseph to take the pages hom to show her. Joseph had prayed about it for as many days and after all the "no" in the world, God finally said "yes". Lucy did not know Lucy was going to hide the pages, so he never found them,. returned to Joseph and Joseph begged God for forgiveness. God eventually forgave him, of course, but this was one of the ways people tried to get him for his claims and his family for supporting him. 29:49 Convenient, but we also believe God is omniscient, meaning he saw the disappearance of these pages in the future and told Nephi, a very old dude at the very start of the BoM, to write the same story that his father, Lehi, had written, "for a wise reason". Nephi even comments on this in the book. Lucy taking the pages wasn't planned, just prepared for. 31:27 Neither the book nor the story claim Native-Americans come from around Jerusalem. 31:48 That's just it, though: we don't want everyone believing us just because we said so. We always advise them to read the Book of Mormon (and the Bible) and pray about getting to know anything if they really want to. Another convenient but no less true thing is, everything uncertain in this life comes down to faith, right? When he was asked by a newspaper after restoring the church how he ensured the members would always do according to the church's beliefs, he said that he does make sure of anything concerning the members' lives in terms of control. He only taught them the doctrine and let them choose what to do with that knowledge - believe and do according to it or not.

I highly recommend the musical The Book of Mormon written in partnership with Matt and Trey as well as the folks who did Avenue Q (famous for the piece The Internet is for Porn). All the mormons I personally know (which is honestly only like 2), are all EXACTLY like that! They're creepily happy, overly nice, optimistic, and literally chill about everything to the point of disgust! I DON'T understand them!... It feels so fake or like something is just wrong with them...

The Mormon cult is so strange, but I generally like a lot of them. The episode really captures just how pleasant many of them are to be around. Of course there are always bad people in every religion, but it's so strange because their faith is so ridiculously false.

They made the episode cause one of em grew up with some Mormon friends and even tho the episode pokes fun, it’s more out of love then being pricks about it. You can dig up multiple interviews about it. Also yes the church as a whole loved the episode. Also this portrays the founding pretty spot on.

I dont agree that its a scam in the bible commands a tithe and we are not a fair weather church. If you end up in a rut the church will help you stabilize yourself and while it is required to get a temple reccomend thats it you can still go to church and still be active and in good standing but its generally up to your bishop and the church handbook says that if a member cannot afford to pay then they dont have too.

10:32 Part of the old mormon belief is that the native americans were distance descendents of the tribes of israel. It's basically a way to justify the forced conversion and genocide by saying they were saving the natives from the barbaric beliefs that overtook their ancient israelite ancestors. Though I should clarify, the mormons of today don't usually enforce many of the stories first developed as part of the faith as they've recognized a lot of racist undertones used. Such as all Africans being the descendents of Cane the first murderer, or the Israelite Native American thing.
