Yeah, the “hell runs” are a prime example of how speedrunners are just built different, at least from me. I’ve certainly tried to stand the heat, if only because I play a lot of randomizers, and it’s practically suicide for me to just check out the rooms around Norfair’s start. Dealing with it for the entire area…yeah, no, I’m not doing that. Ever. Note: none of my seeds ever actually required me to microwave myself before getting the Varia Suit, probably because the randomizer crews know how insane that is for casual players.
@DFPercush3 ай бұрын
I think hell runs are a hard logic only requirement. I've done from the entrance of upper norfair to bubble mountain on 3 tanks in an old vanilla route, but much beyond that is just too stressful for me nowadays :P

Fun fact: In the orginal Japanese text for Other M, Samus intentionally disabled the Varia feature despite it not being covered in her orders, so she’s canonically crazy enough to brave Superheated areas in just her Power Suit, and for spite at that. If you wait long enough on the title screen it will show some gameplay of Samus doing some tricks like the Crystal Flash and the charge beam attacks. It doesn't explain them in detail but gives you just enough information to figure it out yourself. Just like with learning wall jumps from the Etecoons or the Shine Spark from Dachora, the game teaches you by showing you and having you do it. Of course, CF and special beam attacks are not necessary, so finding a use for them is another thing.

Next time you play try doing the mockball in that green room they showed. It's actually not too hard. Then you can wall jump up the other end of the room to grab the items above. Super Metroid has some cool Low% categories, there are actually multiple ways to finish 14% with No Major Glitches. The most common one is Low% Ice, which has been featured twice at GDQ, at SGDQ 2014 and SGDQ 2017. 13% has been done by humans with simultaneous Left+Right (which enables underwater walljumps without Gravity Suit). When Out of Bounds is allowed, you can kill all of the bosses with only 12%. This has been done by a couple of people. Memory corruption allows for completing the game with only 4 item pickups. It's even possible to erase items from your inventory to finish with 0% (which is where my avatar comes from).

This is a great way to see speed runs; broken down move by move by the runners themselves is really cool!

Beating a game backwards? Next you're gonna tell me you can do it upside down!!!

There was a game for the Apple 2 called "Karateka" where the whole game would be upside-down if you booted the floppy disk upside-down... so you could beat that game upside-down.

@douglashudson4706 theres also a niche game that only one or two people have ever played where the whole second half takes place in an inverted version of the map

Someone did make a hack where the game is rotated 90 degrees, does that count?

If you're interested in looking at other nutty metroid speedruns, perhaps give zero mission low% (maybe even low%hard) or fusion's 1% or 0% runs

Apple Sauce :] this was so fascinating to watch and even came at a perfect time. My dad and I finished Super Metroid again just a few days ago. There's really something different about this game and its community

Man, Super Metroid speedrunners are wizards of their art. They never cease to surprise me.

Love the t-shirt with the bosses in the run’s order. Nice touch.
