This is a good illustration of how working class spiders build their own webs. In recent times however, more affluent and upwardly mobile spiders are opting for either pre-fab webs or hiring contractors to build them. Also, some of the more enterprising spiders have become web maintainers where they fix wind damaged webs and replenish the bug catching juice while the web owner is at work or out with the kids. They've done well for themselves.

Wind. You won’t like what that entails. Spiders ride the wind to construct their nets, which leads to flying spiders here and there. There are species of spiders that let the wind carry them long distances

@@shironoyami7002they stand on one object and launch a line of silk across. They crawl across that line dragging a stronger piece of silk. Then they can build the rest of the web off the first strand

I think the silk is negatively charged, just like the ground, while the air is positively charged, so it gets repulsed a bit from the earth into the air. And since the silk is so lightweight, the electric force is larger than the gravitational force. Winds will also help I suppose. I guess they don't have much control over where the first line will land, but as long as it sticks to something further away it's good to go.

It's biologically hardwired into their brains just like any animal has instinctive movements. Do you question how you know to eat when you're born? If not, why question this?
