Benedict of Nursia created a "guidebook" on monasticism. His rules led to the widespread proliferation of scientific study, formalized education, and hospitality for the sick/injured which developed into institutions that are still fundamental to society today.

I live in Europa and had the great luck of having two uncle's who were Monks (Trappist and Benedictine). They always said: do not think the Monastery is a paradise, life is hard and challenging. Nothing romantic. But what I learned most of them? That money, luxury, travelling, TV, computers and so on do not make lucky in life. I learned the rule from them: work and pray. Now retired from work, I still do my own work and prayer on a daily base, as I have done in all my life. I can only say: get a copy of the book the Rule of Saint Benedict, and read in it daily. And pray. Will make you happy, and rethink many things in your life about what is important and what not.

2:54 -- Let's not forget St. Pachomius the Great ( c. 292 - 9 May 348 AD) who was the first to set down a monastic rule, and the founder of Christian cenobitic (collective) monasticism. St. Basil's rule was based on that of St. Pachomius, and it was this already established practice that St. John Cassian transmitted to western Europe.

The Bible encourages us to go and make disciples, not to gather away from the world. Of course, there are good and bad results. I like the example of Monks creating the "Mission Trail" in San Antonio, TX. They started at the Alamo and worked their way each seven miles, establishing a mission. Their goal was to witness to the native Americans.

While wishing to take nothing from your excellent celebration of St. Benedict's Rule, your statement that ot influence all medieval religious life is not entirely accurate. You neglect to mention the Rule of St. Augustine, which many canons followed. It served as the fundamental basis for the life of the Dominican friars, primarily because Holy Father Dominic has been a canon of the cathedral at Osma before founding the Order of Preachers. Follow the Dominican way: Never deny; seldom affirm; always distinguish. Do so and you will prosper in your intellectual endeavors.

Hi all, please "like" this comment so others can understand. At the top is a comment about these being Catholic Monks. This isn't really correct. Thry are just Christian monks. The monastic movement started very early centuries of Christianity and St Benedictine was 480ad onwards. Now my point is, until around 1050ad(much later) there was a division called a schism that resulted what might be called the roots of the orthodox and (Roman) catholic churches as we see them today. My POINT is they are just Christian Monks in common modern language, not SPECIFICALLY catholic (unless by catholic you mean "universal" or "Christian" which kinda splitting hairs) THX, please vote up

There is a saying ‘A man has as many masters as he does vices’. If you have the discipline to do the right thing, avoid self-destructive behaviours and take action, you are able to make positive changes in your life. If you are not disciplined, you can become stuck in negative cycles of self-sabotage.
@roca967
@roca967 4 ай бұрын
This could also tie in to different conceptions of what's meant by 'freedom'. A lot of us have probably grown up with an idea of freedom that's something like "being able to do whatever I want", maybe with the limitation "so long as I'm not hurting anyone else". But I think a more mature idea is that freedom is as a means to do good. Freedom seems to negate itself if it's used in service to vice.

(Self) Discipline involves sticking to plans and decisions that you already chose for yourself, even when it becomes difficult or painful. It is easy to say I will get up at 6:30 am tomorrow morning to finish some task when it’s the night before, but sometimes hard when the alarm clock rings at 6:30 but your bed feels comfortable. So self discipline means your mind has the freedom to execute the plans it chooses for your body. It also means that people trust you to perform a bigger range of tasks and without supervision, giving you more freedom.

A small adjustment is required. My ancestor was a Dutch Celt. The swamp where he lived came into the possession of monks. My ancestor in my father's line had to do the hard work of clearing the swamp; he was known as Slegs. This is a Frankish word comparable to the English term slayer, slaughter, slater; to make something equal. The monks were rich, my ancestors remained poor. Even my grandfather was poor.

Christian monasticism began in Egypt. It was practiced mostly by hermits living in the desert. Orthodox churches continued the monastic traditions. St. Anthony became the first well known of these monks after St. Athanasius wrote about him. St. Pachomius preceded St. Anthony. Prior to Christianity the Jews had religious groups that withdrew to the desert like the Essenes and St. John the Baptist.

I have a crucifix on my bedside table and it has a Benedict medal on it. I keep it to help the evil spirits stay away from me because the favor me.

Do say the prayer written on it Daily. Benedictine Prayer. Also never use Sacramentals as a superstitious object, as though it is a good luck charm.

This practice is still done in traditional Benedictine monasteries around the world, such as Clear Creek Abbey (OK), Fontgombault (FR), La Barroux (FR) Our Lady of Guadalupe (NM) Nursia (IT) I lived this life strictly for a month at Clear Creek, where the Latin mass is offered every day after the office of Terce.

In this vortex of new atheism it seems people have forgotten that Christianity built Western civilisation and indeed to an extent the whole world. Grace perfects nature. The enemy attacks truth so thatvwe lose sight of the past.
