How stolen socks and a ladies’ handbag led to a British Diplomat's kidnap in Iran | BBC Newsnight

Former British senior diplomat Edward Chaplin was kidnapped in Iran in 1987, and relations between the UK and the Islamic Republic quickly deteriorated afterwards.
That kidnap followed claims by Iran that an Iranian consulate worker in Manchester was assaulted by British police.
Mr Chaplin sat down with Newsnight's Joe Inwood and spoke publicly for the first time since he was seized and assaulted by revolutionary guards almost fifty years ago.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is the undisputed champion of attacking embassies. They've attacked US embassies in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon (Twice), Israeli embassies in Argentina and Thailand, and the British and Saudi embassies in Iran, just to name a few...
