Let us give thanks to subbers, especially those that translate foreign languages to local languages!

You'd think that the live subtitler would have access to the same auto-cue that the news readers were reading from.

@@Krusty_T, my neighbour works at RBM and he says BBC has a habit to reshuffle news reports or even add last-minute edited clips. So you've all set up, and - ta-da - first clip isn't about some volcano eruption but PM's afternoon briefing. You either scroll down the script or simply switch on Dragon and start re-speaking.

i am not hard of hearing, but I do put subtitles on anyways incase i can't make out whats happening as our tv has quite a low volume. I always find the BBC aren't very good at subtitling, but this video has made me understand and appreciate it more. Thanks BBC!

As an interpreter (of spoken rather than sign languages), respeaking sounds a lot like my day-to-day!

In Germany, there are subtitles on TV only 12.8%! The stations in Germany on BBC Two "Sea Hear" learn. I hope to offer many other countries, subtitling more! // In Deutschland gibt es im TV nur 12,8% Untertitel! Sender in Deutschland können vom BBC Two "Sea Hear" lernen. Ich hoffe, für viele andere Länder auch mehr Untertitelung anzubieten!

Problem is, that programs for speech recognition are made in general only for most known languages. For example, for Slovenian language we don't have speech recognition programs.

very interesting indeed. I am from Italy, I watch everything I can. and I ahve to admit that subtitles help me a lot! I love documentaries, but infortunately very few have subtitles...why?...

Forse sono un po in ritardo ma è perche è molto difficile mettere dei sottotitoli per video di un ora o piu

Thanks for this very clear explanation. One question, though: his video is open-captioned, which allows you to sophisticated layout things to them that wouldn't be possible with YT's closed captioning. But how is it with the "real" See Hear broadcast? And other pre-recorded video content? (It seems obvious that live broadcasts will be close captioned)

Why are the subtitles on Channels 101 and 102 so small compared to any other Channel or Stations, thought HD was going forward not backwards!!

This is actually really interesting - I'd assumed subtitles were done by someone watching the program and typing the speech out =P I appreciate them a lot more now!

Many thanks -- very interesting. I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, but I still tend to have subtitles on. I just pity subtitlers who work live and have to work out, in 1 or 2 seconds, how to spell foreign words, especially proper nouns! I couldn't do it!

I wonder how the methods have been improved since 2011? 'Cause this was a while ago and I miss this program, and things still seem a bit iffy, but that might just be due to location.

Over a decade later and even the BBCs iPlayer subs are well off. At times so slow that by the end of the video the subs are minutes out. I wonder if it would have been better if they didnt sell this lot off back in 2005. Because its far from good enough even from a private company currently doing the subs.

A computer will NEVER be as accurate as a human stenographer providing a live real-time feed utilizing a Stenograph or steno machine. No matter how much a voice writer trains their speech model it will never be as accurate at a live human broadcast captioner. We spend years building up our speed and accuracy as well as tweaking and adding to our personal dictionaries.

Never say never. AI is only getting better and one day will surpass any human at most sensory jobs. Just on the basis of self learning with more content any human could possibly study.
