I mowed lawns all summer to buy my own N64. My dad gave me the idea and had me keep the mower clean and gassed up at all times. That life lesson taught me that if I worked hard enough, I could get my own stuff. My parents didn't even want to take me to Walmart the day I bought it. So I walked across town by myself at age 14 to buy my own N64. My parents even accused me of stealing it until I showed them the receipt.😅

Exactly. My dad showed me the same life lesson. If you want something, work for it, earn it. The feeling as a young kid, buying your own stuff, you appreciate it more.

The N64 was the first system I spent my own money on. Somehow, that made it extra special. I'll never forget picking it up at Funcoland & bringing it home on the subway.

I never owned a N64 but had the PS1. Playing Gex: Enter the Gecko or Croc was my way of making up not having Mario 64. Mario 64 was the first 3D game to do it right with the camera angles and mechanics.

I actually think it's aged incredibly well considering how early in the 3D-era it came out. The fact that the developers got so much right is insane. I can and do still play this in 2023 and enjoy it more than many modern games. It's hard to say that for some 3D games that came out 10 years ago, let alone 25. I still play it about once a year.

Early in 1996 I attended a technology convention at a theme park, and my brain exploded when I saw Mario 64 live for the first time. I'd seen ads in Nintendo Power but it didn't prepare me. I was astounded by the leap forward in technology. It is THE defining moment in gaming history where suddenly everything was possible IMO. I didn't ride any waterslides or rollercoasters all day, I just stood in line over and over for 5 more minutes of running around Bob-omb Battlefield. Epic.

As someone who’s also been playing since the Atari, it’s really fun to remember games that felt like eye-opening experiences. Doom felt like that… Starfox… Final Fantasy VII….Metal Gear Solid 2…. The first Assassin’s Creed… I would even say the Wii experience felt like a watershed moment to me. WiiSports, Prime 3 and the Wii Edition of RE4 had me convinced that was the future of gaming.

I tell the younglings about this all the time. I'm about your age. Born in 86. I had a NES and SNES. When we got the n64 for Christmas it was MAGICAL. Now I love the SNES but the jump from that to the n64 was out of this world. Especially being like 10 when it came out. My friends and I played the hell out of that system. Mario was awesome. Zelda was awesome. Mario kart. Star fox. Goldeneye. So many amazing games. A lot of my happy childhood memories are tied around the n64. As I became more of an adult I played less and less. The other systems are great and it's been amazing seeing games are becoming now. Like Breath of the wild Tears of the kingdom. But nothing will ever be like when the n64 came out. Unless they start plugging them in directly to our minds

people often miss that the biggest innovation that M64 brought to the gaming industry is that it nailed the definition of a forward vector based on where the camera was... in other words, no more tank controls and a more natural "where you move it goes"

You had to be there! I remember playing SNES and Genesis. One day I went to a buddy’s house, I was maybe 7, he had N64 turned on Mario 64. And I remember my jaw dropping. My eyes were glued to the television and I was totally blown away by what I was seeing on the screen. To this day the jump from 2D to 3D was the most drastic and we have never seen such a leap in gaming since. You had to be there to truly understand how special that was and what Nintendo managed to do. Since then games got prettier, but for the most part, no console generation ever made such a drastic leap and I don’t think we will ever feel that again.

Yeah I feel same way about the jump from 2D to 3D. I was around 9 years old when I first played the N64 and my mind was blown by the leap in technology and graphics. To say it revolutionized gaming is an understatement. Everything changed when gaming transitioned to 3D. Entire franchises and genres that previously defined gaming were literally dropped and forgotten as new ones arose. It was such a creative and exciting time in the industry. Jumping into new generations of gaming used to mean something and leaps were always massive. As a consumer you always knew the new systems would wow you and be worth every penny. From NES to SNES, from SNES to N64 to Gamecube, etc. Now the graphics are so hyper-realistic and consoles are so powerful that the leaps are barely noticeable. And you need the right tv just to take full advantage of it.

I couldn't agree more! The Nintendo 64 was the first console I truly fell in love with, and Mario 64 was the game that won me over. I had a Master System prior to the N64 and was eager to get a Super Nintendo (yes, a SNES) for Christmas '96 but my father got me the N64 instead. It was the best a 10-year-old could wish for. I have so much love and respect for Super Mario 64, it is one of my favorite games of all time.

It absolutely changed everything, i was 12 back then and had an atari, NES and genesis (actually it was a megadrive) before my dad gave my brother and me the N64 with Mario 64 with it (we merged both birthdays and christmas into one big present for both of us) and i can still remember how mind blown and how hard our jaws hit the floor the first time we started the game and it wasn't just the visuals, it was the mechanics, the exploration, the sound, it was so good that to this day nintendo still uses the same base controls for the plumber, it was the game that taught everybody how to make a 3D game that works. Since that moment and to this day i consider it to be the best game of all times because of how ahead of it's time it was and how much it defined the future of gaming. It's a shame that nintendo doesn't work on a complete visual remake of it.

Similar actions for me getting GameCube (my first console I purchased by working for it). I was in high school so hours were not as good to save up as fast, but when I had what I needed, my grandfather took me to Walmart after midnight and bought it. My Grandparents bought me Resident Evil REmake to go with it for earning my console. It was a neat moment. Good memory.

Graphically, Gen 4 to Gen 5 definitely feels like the biggest generational leap because we essentially went from 2D graphics to 3D, but Gen 5 to Gen 6 also stands out to me as a big one because of the refinement of those 3D graphics. I'll never forget how smooth Sonic Adventure looked on the Dreamcast when I first popped it in, coupled with a sense of speed that I had never felt before in a video game. Or I'll never forget being able to see each individual piece of fur on Fox McCloud in Star Fox Adventures. Those are just a few examples of how Gen 6 turned the blocky fledgling 3D of Gen 5 into graphical masterpieces.

I still remember opening my n64 on Christmas Eve 1996. I got the PlayStation the previous Christmas. In 1993, I got an FZ-1 3DO (man was that disappointing. I stayed up all night and into Christmas morning trying to pretend Total Eclipse was impressive). In 1992, I got a Sega CD. In 1989, my brother and I both got GameBoys. I don’t really remember what I got in 1994 or 1991. 1990 we spent in Disney World, so that was sort of the big family present. Anyway, yeah. 1996 was special though. My brother went away to Boston university the next year. So, it was our last real Christmas where we all lived in the same house. By the time the Dreamcast came out, I was buying my own consoles. I ended up getting it on sale for $99 while I was on my break in the mall. I got like a stack of new games for another $100. They were literally $5, $10, and $15. I got a couple extra controllers and a few of those little controller gizmos. To this day, those original dozen or so games are my entire Dreamcast collection. I got sidetracked. Man I used to love video games. I still do, but the 90s were different. Getting VHS promo tapes in the mail for the Sega Saturn and DK Country… Fun times. So, Christmas Eve 1996 is actually one of my most vivid memories. In my family we usually opened gifts on Christmas Eve, that way, my brother and I could stay up playing and there was no stress trying to wake up at the same time. Plus, my Mom was a nurse, and she usually worked Christmas Day. She’s Jewish, so she thought she should work so someone else could be at home. That was actually the main reason. But getting to stay up all night playing video games was a bonus. I remember the dim room and the glow of the Christmas tree. My brother was asleep on the couch behind me. I was on the floor. The first time I saw the rippling water effect when Mario jumps into a painting… Holy crap! I don’t think I’ll ever be capable of being that impressed by a video game. I look at it now and it’s hard to imagine why it seemed so magical. But it just was. If I remember correctly that was the only game I had that night. Electronics boutique had a limit or something where you could only reserve one game if you reserved a system. I believe the consoles were in short supply. My second game didn’t come for a few weeks. I had really wanted Shadows of the Empire, but I still think I chose the right first game. If I had to be limited to one, Mario was the way to go. I actually have my Funtastic Grape N64 in front of me. My original console is in storage. I like anything that’s made of translucent plastic. I’ve got my Halo edition original Xbox, my 500 million edition ps4 etc. right now I’ve got the Grape controller and an Atomic Purple one plugged in. Plus, I’ve got the Limited Run translucent purple Shadows of the Empire re-release cartridge in the system. My N64 gets more use than any of my old consoles for some reason.

I just turned 32, and I think I'll never forget the feeling of absolute bliss I felt the first time I played Super Mario 64 in 2002 (Yeah, I was late.) I got my N64 in 2000, and I remember wanting that game the same year in Toys 'R' Us, but the $39.99 price tag was still a little too much, so fast forward to 2002, and I got the game from Gamestop for $12.99, and it blew me away! I saw a bunch of other "new" things, but nothing could prepare me for the graphically amazing Super Mario 64, and Christmas of that year, I got the massive generational leap of the GameCube, and Super Mario Sunshine; I couldn't have been wowed any further; I saw my first game ever Doom '93 evolve into Halo, saw Super Mario World turn to a jaw-dropping 3D adventure, and multiplied the jaw drop by ten six months later that year. We really take these amazing visuals for granted; they can be easily obtained in a portable sense more now than ever. I remember the massive leap from the black and white Tiger handhelds that I was gifted each year to the Game Boy Color. I couldn't believe it was even as good as it was two years, and a slew of Game Boy Color commercials later; I played DKC on Game Boy Color for the first time, blew me away. Got the GBA the following year, and I thought "Whoa, Mario can talk??", and my imagination went wild, even with the dim screen lit by a lamp that Christmas morning, but I wasn't complaining! I just kept thinking of how far we had come at the time, and what awaits in the future, and wow! I never thought I'd ever be able to play even half of what the PS2 was capable of on a handheld, but here we are!

I was always amazed at how life like the animations, movement, and physics were for that time and Nintendo has never been able to recreate that style of gameplay and momentum/speed movement in their other 3D Mario games which are all still great but this one nailed that movement down so well.

SM64 is by far the greatest game I have ever played. I still play it to completion at least once a year. The movement in that game is so precise, so responsive and so intuitive, you can’t blame anyone but yourself for mistakes. The fact that you can move the whole camera a quarter of the way with one press is amazing to me to this day. If you find the camera annoying it’s your fault and you’re the reason why cameras nowadays are so painfully slow. Perfect game really, even its flaws are spectacular glitches to be exploited in runs. I love this game with all my heart and I will be buried with my childhood copy when I die.

Super Mario 64 is a system-defining game. Like what Sonic the Hedgehog did for the Genesis or what Final Fantasy 7 did for the Playstation. Super Mario 64 is to 3D platformers like what Super Mario Bros is to 2D platformers.

I first Nintendo system is the N64, bought it with my own money, but I never cared for Super Mario 64. Ocarina of Time was beyond amazing for me at the time. It's the first time I felt like an actual adventure and no longer just a game anymore. Never got that feeling again...even with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I guess you can only have one first time. :*(

Yup nothing beats how amazing the gap between SNES and N64 was. I looked at those blocky graphics and thought “it can’t get better than this”

We traded in our N64 after about a year and bought a PS1. A grand total of about zero good games came out while the other had new releases every week. I still remember going to blockbuster video and saying where are the games to rent? Where are they? It was pathetic. There was literally nothing to rent.

If you played a Neo Geo in the early 90's The SNES, Genesis and Turbo felt weak. As far as 3D games, 3DO was 3 years ahead of Mario 64. Playing a Neo Geo and 3DO at launch made Nintendo 64 feel dated. Playstation and Xbox at launch made it feel like hey look at us we caught up to the real big dogs. The big leaps were from the consoles most people weren't playing or even knew about.

You are so right. Nintendo used to be on the cutting edge and I'm over what they been doing. Give us a cutting edge Nintendo again that can do all the great Nintendo games and third party games. People younger than me at work will argue that Nintendo never did this because they are young and I have to tell them it wasn't until the Wii (which I love the Wii personally even though I know it's not the most liked console). Super Nintendo, N64, Cube. When Nintendo really pushed boundaries with tech and creativity. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the Switch but in the 6 years I've owned it nothing really made me say "WoW" Sucks to say that and I'm sure many games have made people say it but not for me. I think the game I enjoyed the most is Cruisin Blast, Animal Crossing sometimes and lately F-Zero 99

I never could get into this game. When it came out, I found it clunky and still do. The gamechanger on the N64 was 007 for me.
