Humility? Where did you get that, in bucket loads, Mr. Dravid? Not surprised our current Team India is universally admired...not merely for winning, but, for doing it with such humility. We all know who the "culprit" is. 🙂

@@kirankhatri5600 nope. He is being brutally honest and Rahul Dravid wasn't most talented cricketer either, he was thanking his luck and cricket sense for which he made to Indian team and became Rahul Dravid, others didn't have that. He was lucky. That's what he is saying. So I don't agree with you. I don't think that Rahul Dravid was superior than everybody.

Guess Rahul is implicitly referring to a player like Sharath ,his fellow mate ,from TN ,,and current national selector .Rahul incidentally played a lot of his league cricket from July 93 onwards in Chennai and has owed a lot of his initial success to the well oiled league circuit and the heady competition it fostered, well run by TNCA.I also recall that the career journeys of Sharath and Rahul Dravid ,fellow contemporary from their india under 19 days in the early nineties overlapped.Sharath ,despite tall scores in the domestic level ,consistent at that, never made the cut but Rahul Dravid made it big(ger) from 93-4 onwards when He got picked and persisted with at SZ teams and India A later on in 94-5, notwithstanding the fact that his run gathering spells were not too dissimilar to Sharath .Yet he was catapulted to better levels and it is to Rahul's immense credit that he adjusted and adapted to those higher levels ever so quickly.Sharath perhaps a tad bit unlucky given he suffered an accident that robbed him off an entire season in 93-4. Who ever knows how the hand of fate plays it's cards.Too abstract to enumerate given the success or the recognition of a players talent by the powers that be or the selectors is purely subjective for it depends on what they see in a player , their potential progress in the long haul & importantly whether the chosen one goes on to be like a star of the yesteryear. In a vast pool of talent in India , a seasoned ,honest to God trier ,a willing soldier that makes up a Cricket team with dogged tenacity as a chief virtue is perhaps given the short shrift and not quite backed or viewed like a palpaby ,visibly talented player even before he fulfils his inherent potential, translates it as performances worthy of that selection in the first place .He is placed way ahead of other lesser mortals in the perceived pecking order. Another issue that is given enormous value by the selectors is the kind of performances mustered versus a visiting side and in Irani trophy ,the season's lung opener. This is where a player like Sharath didn't get too many opportunities to display his wares barring a solitary outing vs SL in 97 where he floundered.Given the hectic competion and that the mid order then was almost set in stone, it may well have robbed many good batsmen in that generation from late 90's to a decade later to be not blooded at all.Quirks of the hand of fate perhaps . "Slings and arrows of outrageous fortune", is not entirely misplaced when it comes to national selection in a country hemmed in with so many players .These days the trend has changed what with the advent of IPL and with the rise of T20 cricket and it's proliferation ,players otherwise who may have been left high and dry get opportunities at IPL levels ,earn well and get recognition ,albeit not the same as an International player. For those stats minded ,Rahul eked 10000 plus runs in odis and tests,a testament to his hunger, drive ,passion ,work ethics and fitness, sharath laboured and toiled to get to play 100 fc matches and score tons of runs in indian domestic scene.Never ever wore the India cap even once Whoever persisted with Rahul when he had a poor domestic run in 93-4 ought to be applauded for not discarding him too soon for he never looked back after 1996.🎉

I don't see the point of singling out Sharath in this case. There were (are and will be) many great cricketers who didn't get to play for India. Also, Sharath was not Dravid's "fellow mate from TN". Dravid played for Karnataka.

Exactly around 97-98 under Sachin's/Azhar's Captaincy Rahul had an extended poor run in the ODI. With him not able to rotate the strike, getting stuck to his crease without hitting regular boundaries he used to be a lame duck in the middle order. Watch out for his back-to-back inning in the Champions Trophy in Bangladesh against Aus and West Indies. If someone plays a similar innings in a tournament for India now, he would skinned alive by so-called keyboard warriors, credit to Rahul for working hard and coming back in ODI's a year later. In 1999 he was a completely changed player with him being a man of the series in the World Cup followed by some outstanding underrated cameos in the early 2000s till his peak in the 2003 World Cup.
