Did you know you can estimate the time before sunset with your fingers? I learned this in the Army. Fingers closed, stretched your arm out put your pinky at the horizon. Each finger is 15 minutes. Each hand is an hour when you stack on on top of another until you block the Sun with a finger. This is accurate up to about 4 hours. Try it out. New video idea. Enjoy

I'm 1.76 m tall and using a measuring tape... the result is 1.76 m from one tip of the forefinger to the tip of the other forefinger 😊 I guess Leonardo da Vinci is famous for the drawing of a human in a circle - the so called "vitruvian man". That's what you bring to mind with the rule of thumb 🎉

Hello, i can confirm your rule of thumb sir. I had a science teacher that dabbled in art and one day a classmate had a picture of DaVinci s vetruvian man the teacher saw and ended up doing an hour on golden ratios, proportions of humans and animals etc. Its a very intersting subject, but the height thing can be a fun party trick. I dont think ive come across anyone more than two or two and a half cm difference. Have a nice day😊👍

At 200 yards, my thumb can measure the height of the flag at 1/8 inches. The ratio of thumb to arm at eyes level is 1/9. I am to multiply the bottom number of the ratio by the known distance, 2 yards, and get the distance to the flag in yards. I can’t quite pair your system with the golf problem.

Oh I thought I was gonna learn how to measure height with my thumb from a distance. 😢😂. But yeah this is 100% true. I’m 5’8” but my wingspan is 5’10” (70”) so 2inches off but it’s usually pretty on point give or take 3” so like +/- 7.5cm

Not sure this will work on everyone, some people have very long arms to height ratio and the opposite, the Ape Index. I know quite lot of reach ( wing span ) and heights of Combat sports athletes.

While this is GREAT, being from the west, we don't use the metric system. I usually judge distance just with my eyes by judging and knowing the distance in yardage of a football field, 100 yards, and breaking it down or increasing in yardage for judging the distance just using my eyes, again, thinking about it in terms of a foot ball field, 100 yards. 3 feet in a yard, 15 feet in 5 yards, 30 feet in 10 yards, and so on, until 100 yards, and then you can increase that judging in distance if something is further away than one football field length (100 yards), or two football fields (200 yds), 3 football fields (300 yds), and so on and so forth, up to a mile, 1,760 yards. That's just how I judge distance. The thumb and the stick is GOOD, and can be used for judging distance and for tracking, if you lost a trail of something or someone you're tracking, having a point from the last known footprint of the trail you're tracking for reference to determine direction, looking for low broken branches, sticks, weeds, grass, hey, or scuffs in the dirt or mud from the shoe or boot heel impacting the ground.

@@yyyalbert AW, THANK YOU for those very kind words, Albert. This is the first time I think that I was led to and watch a video. We're ALL learning, and EVERYONE has their ways of doing things according to how they were taught. And culture, FAITH, ideology, and philosophy have a part in that, too. What makes up each and every single individual person, what THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST does and uses to mold us and shape us during, in, and throughout our lives is TRULY AMAZING. We just need to be and remain humble and teachable, keep an open heart and open mind to learning more and more CORRECT, GOOD, AND RIGHT THINGS for GOD'S GLORY, to accomplish GOD'S DIVINE PURPOSE AND WILL for our lives and to help others, ALWAYS for GOOD. Thank you again for the compliment. That's just something I learned when I was growing up, GOD leads us to people throughout our lives to teach us GOOD things. ALL GOOD, REAL, TRUE KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING, AND WISDOM, GLORY, PRAISE, WORSHIP, HONOR, MIGHT, POWER, MAJESTY, SPLENDOR, CREATION, PRAYERS, AND THANKSGIVING belongs to and goes to GOD. According to Wikipedia, the American boxer Sonny Liston (the most feared boxer of all time, some say) was 1.85 m tall, and had a reach of 2.13 m. He was known for his exceptional reach vs height comparison. Muhammad Ali was 1.91 m tall and had a reach of 1.98 m. A famous boxer today, Tyson Fury, is 2.06 m tall, with a reach of 2.16 m. He was raised to be a boxer, and was indeed named after Mike Tyson, who is 1.78 m tall with a reach of 1.8 m.

Golfers need to know how far it is to a 2 yards high flag. It is usually 100-200 yards when this question comes up. The flag is very small at this distance. If I don’t know the sides of the triangle or the angles, how do I know the distance?
@yyyalbert Жыл бұрын
Golfers got this little Cars to ride over the Field , if you know the size of it , try to imagine how many times it would fit in you messurement . I dont know the size of it but i would guess 10-12 times, now to make it easyer you could imagine 5 of them and then just check if you are at the half if so , this are 10 yards , if not add one more or take on away . Use something that you know the size of , and you have seen from Diffrent Distances . You car , schoolbus , Trucks on the highway , electric Poles . Hope it helps

@@yyyalbert nobody rents the cart for 42.00 unless the doctor told them they must. The flag is two yards high, the arm and thumb give the radians, snd your eyes give you the height measurement. s= r x radians x height. 2 yards = r x 5’5 x 1/9 radians 2 x 5.5x 9 = r the distance 99 yards ti the flag

My Ancestors used a similar method for over 100 years back in the day They would use a stick as tall as the tree looked tilt it over and that was where the tree would fall 100% guaranteed Theres actually a formula you can use for distance but I forget it Its something like your height x 5 x 3 100//1 or something and thats the distance to the Horizon from where you stand the Romans worked it out

SERIOUS question. GREAT video. I got confused with the math. When you said two meters from the tree times ten, being 20 meters, did you then multiply how many feet per meter, about 3 feet times 20 meters being 60 feet, did you then divide that by two to get 30 steps, two feet being your personal normal stride for you, or two feet being the average, usual stride in general for most people?! Because with people being shorter or taller, strides and steps vary. Anyone, would you please answer this?! Serious question. I'm NOT sure if I missed something or if I'm not understanding something. GREAT video.
@yyyalbert Жыл бұрын
Hey ,in my case one step is 70 cm .your might be longer or shorter . So 30 steps x 0,7 meter = 21 meters
@williamw.carter8468 Жыл бұрын
@@yyyalbert Copy that. Thank you for the reply. I didn't know if that was your personal step stride or if it's the average universal. I think I heard some time ago that the majority of people's length or stretch in stride is about two feet for a normal walk. And the math adds up for distance and steps, meters, and yards. So universally, most of humanity would have about 30 steps, two foot length in stride in casual normal walking for every 60 feet / 20 meters / yards. It'd be 30 steps for every 60 feet / 20 meters / 20 yards for MOST people in the world. Am I correct in saying and thinking this?
