@Author: The Vikings were never on the American continent, which is one thing by the way. They were not a race either because all of Sweden and almost all of Norway was invaded by the Goths after Rome fell into the hands of Alaric. In Italy they were called Ostrogoths and in Spain Visigoths. Therefore being a Viking was an activity, typical of young men from around the Baltic Sea and North Sea. These men needed a dowry to have women and get land, so they risked their lives plundering small defenseless towns and only men went, never women. They had no military preparation and that is why they never managed to win a battle alone against an army anywhere, not in France, not in northern Spain or against the Arabs, they always lost. They were not much taller than other northern populations. It simply happened that the Mediterranean people and others developed a gene that the Nordics do not have that limits growth in order to adapt to agriculture, they suffer less from older backs.

There are danes, norwegians and swedes and they all went Viking, but there are no race/people called vikings. Its an occupation that entales traders, raiders and so on. When most of these people got home they were farmers or craftsmen or fishers/hunters.

Me, Danish female, 5’9-ish (176 cm) strawberry blonde/red hair and green eyes. My DNA is more than 90% Danish, 5 percent Northern German and the rest broadly Scandinavian. My maternal grandmother born in 1929 was only 155 cm tall and had black hair. But she was very, very Danish as I’ve traced her lineage back to the 1300’s.

My husband was half Norweigan, 1/4 Swede, and 1/4 English. He used to tease me (100% Irish), saying I was actually Norweigan due to all the raping and pillaging by his ancestors on the Emerald Isle. I know the English crown lost its pure blood because 9f the blood of the Vikings also, so I think my husband was more right than wrong with his claim. He was 5' 8" and I was 5' tall. His father and grand father were both robust yet only 5'8" or so. I gave birth to the first female child born to his family (Holmeide, the owner of the farm, not just a farmland who took the farm's name)

@ Yeah, his 1/4 English blood might as well have been half Danish along with his Norwegian side. We were one nation for quite some time. I read somewhere, that the English all have a lot of Danish dna, not the Scots or Welsh though. (Which makes sense, since the Danish Vikings were in England…) But yes, the Vikings were very much present in Ireland too, as far as I remember Dublin was founded by them? My friend’s Grandfather sailed from Denmark to Dublin on a replica Viking ship to celebrate - perhaps is was the 1000th anniversary? It was back in the 40’s or 50’s.

And since I have an ancestor who came from Normandy I guess I have some of that too. I read an article that said that it was impossible to tell if anyone today has Viking DNA. I did read in an encyclopedia that when Christianity came the Vikings gave up their ways and became Christians. God bless.

@@johnough4893 Great you got that right but this was the same heartland and the same people. Bismarck succeeded with an agressive war that conquered the southern parts of Denmark whereof most have been German dominated since. The original was Altona which in alod Norse means All too Near. Later the fortified border to the German Roman Empire was further to the north but still encompassing the areas where Anglerne, Sakserne and Jyderne lived. Jyderne lives in modern age Denmark.

What caused the Anatolian farmers to leave the area of Turkey?
@TheHistoryHubs
@TheHistoryHubs Күн бұрын
It’s believed that the farmers started moving out thousands of years ago, mostly because of overcrowding, shifting climates, and the hunt for better land. But some researchers think there’s more to it than that. One idea is that an early civilization in Anatolia or the Near East fell apart, scattering people in all directions. Others think religion might’ve played a part, with farmers spreading their beliefs as they moved and planted crops. And then there’s the thought that maybe they weren’t just leaving by choice, conflicts or rival groups could’ve pushed them out This question reminds me of the story of Ötzi. When scientists examined Ötzi the Iceman’s stomach, they found traces of emmer wheat🌾, an ancestor of durum wheat, which is still widely grown and used in Turkey today Ötzi was a descendant of Anatolian farmers

Although there is fascinating information in the video, there is also important information that is missing in the video. In the video, the Vikings sail from Norway past the Faroe Islands to Iceland and on to North America. It just lacks precision in that description. What is missing in that description is that at the time when Vikings from Norway sail to Iceland for the first time, Norwegian Vikings from Northern UK have lived on the Faroe Islands for 200 years and thus the Faroese are descendants of Vikings 200 years before any Vikings were in Iceland. There is an artificial focus on Iceland as if the people of Iceland are the last Vikings. But you have to remember that the Viking language that came with Norwegian Vikings from the UK to the Faroe Islands is 200 years older than the Icelandic language which had been influenced by other languages in Scandinavia and Northern Europe for 200 years while the old Viking language was intact in the Faroe Islands totally unaffected by the outside because the Faroe Islands were so remote and isolated. So the language in the Faroe Islands has roots in the old Viking language, while the language in Iceland, which is 200 years younger, has roots in the new Viking language, which was influenced from several sides in north Europ and Scandinavia. And the Parliament in the Faroe Islands was in the Faroe Islands long before there was any parliament in Iceland. In the Faroe Islands Altinget is formed and, with its current name, the Lagtinget, is the world's oldest legislative assembly. The parliament met in the summer on the Tinganes peninsula east of the island of Nólsoy at Thorshavn (Thors Sea Harber ) which is the capital of the Faroe Islands. The central location of the place and the island of Nolsoy, which protects against the worst storms from the east, were decisive for the location of the thing. The arrivals came either by boat, on foot or on horseback and lived in tents. The deliberations of the Alting were led by a lawmaker, a layman, who knew the laws by heart. At the meetings of the Alting, the country's affairs were taken care of, laws were passed and disputes were mediated, thereby uniting the executive, legislative and judicial powers. All free men were equal before the law.

The Yamnaya took indigenous Nordic women off that BCE and mated with them. I suppose since they were “milk drinkers” it most likely made their bones longer, thicker, denser, etc and they passed that DNA 🧬 on to Scandinavian/ Nordic people 🤷‍♀️

From a Norwegian, the Danes were the real vikings. First and foremost, we were all Norsemen, traders, farmers etc., but as far as vikings are concerned (which btw was a "profession", rather than an ethnic group), the Danes deserve a better reputation, and us Norwegians get way too much praise. According to DNA tests, I'm 100% Scandinavian (97% Norwegian), which of course I am proud of, but I think TV shows just use Norway as the geographical association for vikings, or the "capital" of vikings if you will, because of our nature. Which is a bit silly

Norjalaisten geeniperimästä n. 27% on peräisin saamelaisilla.

@@ulflyng Min broder! Norwegians feud is primarily with the Swedes, just like you Danes. We've always been your little brother, while Sweden is like a distant cousin (why am I even responding in English...). Despite what I said, I must admit the architecture in modern productions would've looked a bit dull, had it not been for the influence of our dragon style, which in fact is Norwegian. it arrived in the late 1880's, so not exactly Viking age, but it's partly inspired by architectural discoveries from the Viking age, as well as our Stave churches. No historical cultures becomes iconic without their own distinct architecture (Greece, Rome, Egypt, Japan etc.), but the architecture most people associate with the Vikings isn't exactly accurate. But hey, like Gandalf said; "All good stories deserve embellishment". The name Gandalf originated from Norse mythology btw :p

The holocene "optimum" (10K years before present) had global temperatures 3 C HIGHER than now. Thus, once the ice was gone (quite quickly) the low lying and accessible areas had a climate similar to modern-day south of France. Not surprising it was settled and farmed.

Dark complexions come from warmer and sunnier climes. All about the vitamin D / melanin synthesis and sunlight angle of incidence.

There is more to it. The original hunter gatherers of europe like similar peoples in other parts of the world had darker skins, but their diets included Vit D. Farmers like the anatolians had a lower amount of Vit D in their plant based diet of domesticated crops. So they evolved lighter skin. The modern populations of western europe now have lighter skin. But the eyes of the original inhabitants tended to be blue as they are to this very day. Blue eyes have better vision for darker environments is the claim. Later on genes that allow adults to digest the milk sugar called lactose were selected for allowing the ingestion for fresh milk.

@@loquat4440 Interesting conjecture. Vitamin D (like A, E and K) is fat soluble and is converted in our liver for use. It is found in fatty fish (especially liver oils) and some in beef liver and a bit in egg yolks. Inuit are never exposed to sunlight but they eat a lot of liver (except polar bear as that contains toxic amounts of vitamin K) and fat (blubber). Skin colour has to do with origins and eventual locations versus sunlight incidence and availability.
