RIP Terry Venables, for those of who were able to watch Euro 96, it was one of the best times to be alive as an England fan. People forget what he did at Barcelona though (only stopped by the unbeatable Steaua in completing a remarkable 2 seasons there). They hadn't won the league for over a decade.

Totally agree.. I was 15 and it is the first tournament I have real memories of(I was 9 during Italia 90 and don’t quite remember it) It should’ve come home and Venables should’ve had longer as England manager… great times and great memories

When Euro '96 was held here, those were some of the best days of my life. The whole country had such an atmosphere about it, with England flags on most cars and every single person talking about football. It was like being on holiday, even though I have lived here all my life.

To this day, by far the most enjoyable England performances were played under Terry Venables. We went out to beat the big teams in style. He united England fans like no other manger has since. RIP Tezza.

Terry was also a fantastic manager of Australia, and very unlucky (as per Barca and Euro 96) to not lead a very talented side to our first World Cup in 20 years. Losing our 2 game play off against Iran in crazy circumstances late on after a pitch invader. As an Aussie who enjoyed Euro 96 from afar, I still recall the Teddy to Shearer pass during the Dutch decamation very fondly. RIP

Even though i cannot stand the england team, it was one time in our lifes english people were excited about english team, and a tournament Living just beside wembley back then, it was hard not to get caught up in what england was feeling back in 1996 Germany vs england was one of the best games ever in that event, and although i was glad germany won, england sure gave everything they had that night, and it really was a great game.

rip el tel ❤ I honestly think that the fa at the time should hang thier heads in shame for sacking him after euro 96 that football was the best I have ever seen in my lifetime imo re england and luck didnt go his way really the same thing happened to sir bobby robson aswell and yes that dutch match was memorable aswell😁 southgate aint even in the same conversation as robson or venables imo the guy just keeps getting tournament after tournament because the media and the fa like him unfortunately 🤔

What stands out with that team is that it didn't seem to have what you would call a traditional holding midfielder. A massive achievement to get all those creative players working as a team playing fluid football but also having discipline when needed. RIP Terry, it was a joy to watch Euro 96.

Euro 96 was my first and best tournament as i was to young at 1990. Remember we sneaked into a empty room in school and watched a game and everyone was singing three lions and Oasis was a great time

I liked Venables though feel his football management career was a bit unfulfilled. However getting to the semis in 96 was just about par - they should have won the tournament with that team at home. Also as I recall most of the England games he managed in lead up to Euro 96 were turgid with even Shearer unable to score.

England only managed to get the best results in major tournaments if they were the host and played at Wembley: 1.1966 World Cup Final: They beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time (the only time a men team won any international tournaments). 2.Euro 1996 Semifinal: They lost 5-6 on penalties to West Germany. 3.Euro 2020 Final: They lost 2-3 on penalties to Italy (but still considered as the best result for England in European Championship, surpassing the Euro 1996 semifinal). 4.Women's Euro 2022 Final: They beat Germany 2-1 after extra time (it's the first silverware for the women's team and the second only time a first team won the major silverware). Will the football went home in 2028, when England were the co-hosts along with Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Republic of Ireland? I think not.

There was no Last16 back then, so England won just one KO game in Euro96, on pens against Spain. That was the only KO game England had won in the entire history of the Euros. Until Southgate won three in 2021, all in 90 mins too. In Euro96 the Germans were singing "it's coming home", in 2021 the Italians were singing it. Never fails to motivate our opponents that song. Even Modric said it inspired Croatia to beat us in the semifinal of WC2018. But at least Frank and Dave made more money.

@@Grandmastergav86 The same situation happened for France. They had a disappointing results in the last 3 major tournaments, even failing to qualify for 1990 and 1994 World Cups. The Euro 1996 semifinal run for France was a catalyst for the same team that won the World Cup two years later at home soil, especially when you see the fact that a young Zinedine Zidane made his tournament debut in Euro 1996 after guiding Bordeaux to the historic UEFA Cup Final, which opened the doors for him to play with Juventus. But unlike England, France had a lot of success with a good talents. They even produced some players from Africa. This is where the problem started for England.

The 1990 and 1996 England teams played good attacking football thats why Back then England legitimatly had the qulity to go toe to toe with the likes of Germany, France,Holland and Spain and Italy etc etc. in those 2 Germany games England were arguably the better side on both occasions they were also Germany's hardest matches in both Tournaments. In my opinion in 1990 Germany Italy and England were the best 3 teams in 1996 Germany and England were the best teams.

Excellent analysis of Vegetable's Euro 96 approach from Carra, but to clarify, Vegetables didn't learn his tactics from being at Barca. He devised the tactics - pressing high, etc - that secured them success.

Let's have it right! If Gazza n half the team weren't drinking heavy n partying on England duty, he would have reached those extra few inches to prod home that cross he missed and England would have /should have won Euro '96 at a canter! Germany were bang average! But again, due to England unprofessionalism, we FAILED! Semi- Finals mean you finish 4th/3rd, YOU still lost n won NOTHING! 🙏
