You're definitely the most knowledgeable ableton guru I've seen so far, I used to work in Reason and I got really in depth with it's design, (routing cvs and audio singals through several malstroms and stuff like that) and I lost all of it when I switched to ableton. Years later I find you and watch your videos and now I can emulate the same in depth style that I love, with ableton! It really excites me to do even more music. Thank you so much for it all man!

Tons of awesome sample manipulation tips in here. I’m fairly new to Ableton and quickly realized it’s really set up like some kind of modular sampler: the tools for sample manipulation are deep and abound. I don’t even work in what would be considered an “electronic” music genre but it’s been really rewarding creatively to start wrapping my head around it and approach every sound as it’s own instrument

Is the Ableton Project going to be available on your site?
@djkimotei4 жыл бұрын
Is it possible that I can teach the great mr.Bill something? :D I recommend to not use zero phase hpf on the master, nor on the bass alone. Kicks are no problem for the most part, because they are a constant pitch shift usually. Hpf by nature can often strongly mess with the dc offset phase of the sub bass, giving you weaker basses! Its just how eqs physically work. If you must use a hpf then use linear phase mode instead, as it does not mess with the phase, however your project will get a lot if latency with this mode, and potentially some low pre-ringing. Personally I usually cant hear it, or it never is so loud that its a problem. DC offset on the Utility plug will not help you unfortunately. You can see the effect of the hpf on pro L by just turning the hpf on and of. More often then not you will see an increase in peak and a decrease in rms by many db, which means the sub is massively out of phase, and this will force the final mastering to be much lover then it could, and the bass would not be as full and phat as it could be. Its not always the case, but it is at least 50% of the cases. Depends on the waveform of the sub bass. (You can use a waveform view plug to see the exact effect. I recommend Oszillos Mega Scope) Even low shelf can mess with it, but in a lesser degree usually. Remember that the final release master file, 16bit/44.1 has by default a steep linear hpf at 20hz, so you might not even need to think about this. In general I recommend to strive to make things sound optimal from the source, so the least amount of eq is needed in the end to “fix” it. This optimizes the clearness of the mix. In general eq messes with dc offset all over the place, so less is more, in this aspect. Yes, you could mix with linear phase instead, but the latency will make you mad! The phase issue is most noticeable in the sub region because the bass is alone down there and its a massive part of the mix in bass music. Im a mastering engineer, using analog processors for the extra mojo it gives, in combo with some software if needed. I can offer to master 1 track of yours for free if you like, because you have given us so much amazing knowledge for free over the years! Just hit me up if you are interested. :) Kim
@MrBillsTunes4 жыл бұрын
Kim Svendsen can you link a track that's been mixed with this in mind? Curious to hear how much cleaner it sounds.
@djkimotei4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Bill Sorry for late reply! The email notification went by me! To make a showcase we would need 2 identical tracks, then apply linear phase hpf on the bass to just one of them, non linear phase hpf to the other. Otherwise we would not know the difference. Just try it! Takes 2 seconds. :)
@MrBillsTunes4 жыл бұрын
@@djkimotei So, I just did that, and this is the resulting phase cancel: www.dropbox.com/s/sstxn6b6241q1cj/linear%20phase%20test.wav?dl=0 I have a hard time believing your brain can pick that out as it'd be so heavily masked by the tune itself, but if so - that's pretty damn amazing :D
