2006 was the first World Cup I ever watched. I was 16 years old watching it from the US. The tournament left a lasting impression on me and about Germany in general. I spent some time in Germany in my 20s and it’s gotten me to appreciate German society and culture. Germany will always have a place in my heart.

Notable key moments in the 2006 World Cup: 1.Zinedine Zidane's headbutt in the World Cup Final. 2.Lionel Messi's debut in the World Cup. 3.Cristiano Ronaldo clashing with Wayne Rooney after the latter's controversial red card. 4.The Battle of Nuremberg (Portugal vs the Netherlands in the Round of 16). 5.English referee Graham Poll giving 3 yellow cards to Croatia's Josip Simunic. The ironic thing is that 2014 World Cup easily overwhelms the 2006's moments, especially eventual winners Germany, who, in turn, denied the host Brazil in a lopsided way (7-1).

I doubt it will be the same this year, completely ignoring the teams success. I am from germany and leading up to 2006, the cup was advertised since around 2000 everywhere, in print media and tv, you had debates about things regarding youth programs etc, so there was a transformation going on all around the german football and you always heard something about the upcoming cup in 2006, so people were more primed to finally see it unfold. And when they started playing with this amazing attacking football and scoring beautiful goals... there was no stopping us fans anymore. This cup is not in our heads as much as the one in 2006 was before the ball even started rolling. I still hope for a great tournament and super atmosphere, but I seriously doubt it will be similar to 2006.
