I would love to see what percentage of footage they actually use after a week long shoot. Nearly every shot we see in the final version is simply breathtaking.
@Vox8 жыл бұрын
One of their producers, Chadden Hunter, told me that they shoot 6-8 terrabytes of footage for what ends up being a 3-4 minute sequence. High resolution and high frame rate are part of that but also, keeping the shot in focus has become much harder with these big camera sensors (shallower depth of field) and all the moving handheld shots. The camera operators for these shows are absolute beasts -joss

Documentaries are typically shoot everything and let the editor sort it out. Of course there is a general outline for what to get but most of the magic footage comes from the unplanned shots that are shot on reflex/instinct/whim. Source: I've edited a few doco's.

Sometimes I hear Attenborough’s voice in my head as I go about my day “The young adult male, hungry yet again, forages the pantry for more signs of potato crisps or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. While he should be out foraging for greener pastures or preparing a fresher meal, he seems to have decided to gain body weight & mass as a means of attracting a mate to better keep warm for cuffing season. What an interesting display of behavior. We’ll check back in with him later”

The ending note was so apt...no technology can replace masterful storytelling. Having recently used a Glidecam (Stedicam alternative) for the first time and being excited about the potential for "epic" shots, I realized soon enough that just a steady shot doth not a compelling watch make :P The composition, the lights, the motif...and with non-actors just as with animals, capturing them without spooking them...all so crucial. The challenges, the disappointments, the joys of filmmaking is like nothing else for me :) Looking forward to more such videos (a welcome break from politics).

I'm not okay with how David Attenborough's name was pronounced, I forgot American's say those sort of names funny. Att-en-bruh not Att-en-boh-row. Att-en-burr-uh also works.
@simbaonsteroids88368 жыл бұрын
Curly j20 it's because we see borough and assume it's pronounced the same way that you would if we're talking about the things that dug the Chunnel do.
@choongren58368 жыл бұрын
At-ten-bur-ruh is the correct pronunciation if I'm not wrong, from what I've watched of British television. 'Edinburgh' is pronounced similarly.

No one will be able to replace David Attenborough. I think Stephen Fry will take the role IF he sadly passes alway but will never fulfill to the exceptional role from the living legend! You can't not like him; he is amazing in every way! Love ya lots David.

Paid for by me, my friend, my whole family and everyone else I see on the street and with no adverts whatsoever. Why can't it be like this with trains in the UK?
@anandpatel10746 жыл бұрын
Because people don't realize taxes literally buy society.
@rjfaber19916 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the big problem with trains is not the franchising system, it's aging infrastructure.
