How the Bobcats ruined the Pelicans history (and the Thunder are next)

The NBA has attributed the stats and history of the original Charlotte Hornets to the current Hornets team. But these stats should actually belong to the Pelicans franchise. And it's probably going to happen again to the Thunder in a few years.
My main issue is with the Historical stat keeping. If the Current Hornets want to honor the history of the original team and even retire a jersey then go for it. But the official stats should not be retroactively attributed to an entirely different team.

as a basketball fan from seattle. i would like to have our history back and let the thunder keep their thunder history separate. its kinda messy like you stated but i think it just makes the most sense

Yeah I completely get that, the history of the Sonics definitely belongs in Seattle, but for me when looking at it from an official record keeping perspective, it just doesn't make sense to move official records and stats from the Pelicans or hypothetically the Thunder, just because a new team has mantled the identity of their past incarnation.

Yea Its really weird. The History Between The Charlotte Hornets and The New Orleans Pelicans is really odd. The Charlotte Hornets Originally Began playing in The NBA In 1988 and Then They Relocated to New Orleans and Became The New Orleans Hornets in 2002. In 2004 The City of Charlotte Would receive a Brand New Franchises called The Charlotte Bobcats. In 2005 The Hornets would relocate to Oklahoma City and Played there for 2 Seasons from 2005-2007 Where They were Known as The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets due to Hurricane Katrina destroying New Orleans. In 2007 The Hornets would Relocate Back to New Orleans Permantly. In 2013 The New Orleans Hornets Who was The Continuation of The Original Charlotte Hornets would change their name to The New Orleans Pelicans which left The Hornets name available for any Team. That Name was picked up by The Charlotte Bobcats a year later in 2014 and Became The Charlotte Hornets. And The Pelicans agreed to Transfer all The History and records of The Original Charlotte Hornets from 1988-2002 to The Current Charlotte Hornets. The Charlotte Hornets was considered to be Inactive from 2002-2004 While The New Orleans Pelicans became an expansion team that joined the NBA In 2002. To summarize everything. The Charlotte Hornets began playing in the NBA In 1988. The team was folded in 2002. They Came Back in 2004 as The Charlotte Bobcats and Then They became The Charlotte Hornets again in 2014. The Oklahoma City Thunder still has the History of The Seattle Supersonics from 1967-2008 after relocating To Oklahoma city in 2008, The Thunder has only won 1 title which was in 1979 as The Seattle Supersonics. That 1979 title still counts as their only title.

In a few years the Thunder might lose that history though because of expansion. On one hand you can understand why, but at the same time it makes absolutely no sense to give official stats and records over to an entirely new franchise just because of a team name.

@@quintupleovertime Yea maybe Seattle is probably going to get a new franchise in the near future. Which I believe The Seattle Supersonics are probably coming back. And they would reclaim the history and record Of The Original Seattle Supersonics from 1967-2008 which is gonna turn The Oklahoma City Thunder into a 2008 expansion team. And also the NFL's Cleveland Browns had a similar problem as well Just Like The Charlotte Hornets. The Cleveland Browns would relocate to Baltimore after the 1995 NFL Season. That franchise is Now The Baltimore Ravens. But however in 1999 The Cleveland Browns would eventually come back to the NFL and Reclaim The History of The Original Cleveland Browns which turned The Baltimore Ravens into a 1996 expansion team. Sometimes sports history can get mixed up. So now The Original Charlotte Hornets history from 1988-2002 Belongs to The Current Charlotte Hornets and also the Time when they was known as The Charlotte Bobcats from 2004-2014. The New Orleans Pelicans still have The New Orleans Hornets history from 2002-2005/2007-2013 and their brief period in Oklahoma city when they were known as The New Orleans/Oklahoma city Hornets from 2005-2007 due to Hurricane Katrina. And that's pretty much it.

@@quintupleovertime And The same thing is happening to The NHL's Arizona Coyotes Right Now and They are moving To Utah next NHL Season that is about to come up. So I'm not sure if the original Winnipeg Jets history is to going to be transferred to The Current Winnipeg Jets or The New NHL Utah Franchise and The Arizona Coyotes history as well. Because Now There's a franchise in Utah called The Utah Hockey Club. So yeah The Arizona Coyotes are relocating to Utah Next season. So this means The Arizona Coyotes are dead and They are Now The Utah Hockey Club.

It does make sense. You explained what happened in this video 😂 It's a little confusing and sloppy but do you live in an NBA market? I'm from Louisville so I don't really have skin in the game but I've moved to Oakland now and Vegas keeps stealing our teams I understand why a person from Charlotte would want to claim those fun Muggsy Zo Larry Johnson teams And I think anyone from Seattle would be like F the Thunder One silver lining is that both of the moves you described were pretty well timed Charlotte wasn't doing anything memorable when they went to new Orleans and OKC got the thunder in the earliest stage of that build. Yeah KD wore a Sonics jersey for a year but OKC got a franchise, then built a memorable team. Ray Allen was gone, Seattle was just kind of existing. Hey, did you know magic Johnson was a Jazz pick they had to give away to sign Gail Goodrich? And the Jazz relocated to Utah for Magic's rookie year Also the jazz drafted Dominique Wilkins in 82, traded him for john drew, who was just aite What if Utah brought back the aba name the stars and new Orleans changed from hornets to Jazz... It's all a bit jumbled Best to not think of it too much

Yeah I understand about the memories, I'm completely fine with the hornets honoring those original Hornets players. But from an official stat keeping perspective it just doesn't make any sense. Just because a franchise changes their name doesn't mean an entirely different franchise should be able claim official records from them, just because they named themselves what the other team used to be called.
