Our lobgoblins are going to have to counter their 3 point shooting. Saw a tweet that said Boston is one of the worst pick-n-roll defenses in the playoffs and the Mavs of course are the best PnR team in the playoffs. On the other hand, we are middle of the pack at defending 3 point shooting teams and Boston is the best 3 pt shooting team in the playoffs. So its our PnR based offense vs. their 3 point shot based offense. We have to hope that they have a harder time defending our PnR than we have defending their 3 pt shooters.

Mavs are more cohesive defensively with DJJ in starting lineup along with Gafford and PJ. Coach Kid will put DJJ on Jason and PJ on Jaylen Brown. DJJ did a great job on Paul George, SGA, and Ant-Man. Is Jason better offensively than SGA? No Jason will have problem with Mavs physicality. He's soft. It was tough for all of the teams Dallas beat to score in paint. Interior defense have been SUPERB. The problem with running the Celtics off the line is that there won’t be any backside help. There’s no Dort or Giddey in their starting 5 that you feel comfortable cheating off of like against OKC’s 5-out. They’ll either live at the rim or get open 3s. The Celtics offense is really scary matchup-wise. I think the Mavs might try to match Gaffords minutes with Horford and live with him getting open 3s with Gafford at the basket. If Horford can’t make them pay, Gafford can win those minutes with offensive rebounding and punishing Horford on the Luka/Gafford PnR.

Here's what I think game 1 will be like (remembering Kidd doesn't really care much about losing it and will probably be more focused on assessing what he has to do than on winning): Mavericks will play the Celtics exactly like they did the Thunder, with the caveat that while OKC had an elite rim protector in Chet, the Celtics have a bunch of smaller guys and Porzingis, who's more of a gigantic 4 than a classical 5 and should be highly ineffective defending against mostly Lively and, to a degree, Gafford. The idea will be to see if Luka beating his matchup for 25-30+ and Lively getting some 20+ points -- mostly "guaranteed" buckets from alley-oops and post-up game (say 80% TS from D-Live and maybe Gafford) --, plus whatever Kyrie can bring in is enough to offset a bunch of Tatum midrange shots and the Celtics hitting around 2 of every 3 shots from 3 if all goes right for them. If the script is executed to perfection on both ends, this is some very interesting math to work out. However, because the Mavs have been less consistent in the elements involved in that scheme (Luka has had some off nights; Lively has had his share of missing easy finishes; and we've seen some timid or less than ideal appearances by Kyrie) while that's basically what the Celtics have been doing all season and postseason, I see a big chance of a blowout and then coaching staff is back to square 1 for game 2. There's some hope in NBA finals mentality from LuKai and in the extreme resilience this team has developed, but when everyone in the opposing team shoots over 35% from 3, you are always hanging by a thread.
@undiscoveredstars10025 ай бұрын
2 of every 3?? If celtics shoot 66% from 3 they will win by a million
@maferreira19845 ай бұрын
@@undiscoveredstars1002 well, you gotta assume the worst case scenario when you are willing to give up 3s as your main strategy. The Clippers kinda did that in game 4 (18/29, 62%) and won by 116-111 (not by a million), but that was an anomaly for them and Luka was playing considerably worse than now, despite the 29-10-10 triple double. (Kyrie dropped 40, but the rest of role players mainly played to their averages offensively -- especially Lively and Gafford, as Zubac is not really an empty paint.) When it comes to Boston, 60%+ is just a good day in the office -- and they shoot 40+ 3s a night --, but if you're considering allowing that, you gotta be ready to counter somehow. Question is whether or not Mavs centers' dominance could be enough.

Celtics aren’t going to stand by and let a 20 year old in Lively just alley oop for 20+ LOL. Old man Horford will school him some vet style. He is a man on a mission to get that title in his last season. Porzingis is likely coming off the bench to spell Horford and that will be good enough. But I think you guys will surprised at where Porzingu’s game is both offensively and defensively, since he was in Dallas.
@maferreira19845 ай бұрын
@@z8r0 taking away Lively alley-oops normally equates to giving up Luka or Kyrie floaters. There are alley-oops and there are Luka alley-oops. Im a Kyrie Fan but yoh i need Luka to Win only because i think he's better than Lebron.... that is why they hate on he's game... everyone will have to admit that not even Lebron was destroying folks like this... and if Luka doesnt Choke and wins then he is 1-0... Tatum 0-2.... The real story of Kyrie is not just the celtics.... Jrue Championship experience is due to a Giannis Cheap Shot... but Kyries is only attributed to Lebron being on he's team... this finals might be repeated next season like the GSW... it's giving me that vibe.... all i pray for is health for both sides.... Kyrie and Luka are gonna kill these guys... This isn't Jimmy Butler...

The current Mavs team are just too much to handle for the Celtics. If this current Mavs team were assembled at the start of the 2023 regular season, most probably they are the no. 1 seed in the whole NBA.

@@eb7027No, they’ve only played this current Mavs rooster once. It was close a game until the 4th quarter too(I think the Celtics were only up by 4 or 6 after 3) Then the Celtics went crazy from 3 and blew that game open. But the regular season doesn’t mean that much in a grand scheme of things and the two teams or playing differently since then. The Thunder, Clippers, and the Wolves gave the Mavs a couple of beat downs too and won their season series but they all loss to the Mavs.
@eb70275 ай бұрын
@@dhay03 we will see the difference is that Celtics are not those teams. Celtics are the best team in basketball 🏀. And it does not matter if the Mavs kept it close for 2 quarters. They were "blown out" by 28 points. Close is for hand granades and horse shoes.

Nick where are they going to hide Luka and Kyrie on defense? The Celtics make them look like fools on defense I guess everyone forgot how Luca was on his backside when trying to guard Jaylen Brown. It's funny how everyone in Dallas is saying they got a great defense but no one brings up the fact that two of their starters suck on defense😂
