Happy Friday! Check out our Atlas episode explaining the conflict in Kashmir here: bit.ly/2CA3kfi

The episode is poorly researched.... Please dont spread misleading info.. You barely scratched the surface.. 1.You didnt explain the water issue(major rivers originate in kashmir and if whoever controls it controls the agriculture down stream) 2. You didnt mwntion Hindu and Buddhist Exodus due to religious violence 3. You didnt mention the Pashtun invasion in the majority Hindu & Buddhist state in british raj and many other issues.. Very dissapointed...

@@petergriff7624 imagine all of europe, with all of its myriad cultures and historical beef, is one day visited by a mysterious indian king who claims that the europeans will be lavished with futuristic gifts, education and land, as long as all of europe unites into one easily controllable government and leases all of their natural resources to india. Would you be so keen to look at this as a simple good deed if the roles were changed, i wonder, because this is exactly how india was "united", and im being very generous of the oppressor in this depiction.

my grandfather was in the Indian Army(back then the British Indian Army) during the partition period. prior to that and during that period, he was posted mostly in Lahore and parts of present day Pakistan and north India. and he had taken many many photos of pre-partition Lahore and Punjab and Delhi etc and the post-partition Punjab and Lahore and many parts of India. i wonder as an Army officer, if he was first hand witness to the horrors of the grand exodus happening between both the nations. he has taken many images of people travelling on foot and trains between the two nations during the partition. he had bequeathed that precious album of his to me. and it even had images of funeral procession and actual funeral of Mahatma Gandhi. all are posted in a sequential order. i wonder if he pasted those images with a purpose. showing the exodus and its aftermath to his family. but really no one even understood its importance until i grew up and checked out those images closely.coz by now they are old and faded black and white images. sadly my grand dad passed away when i was in 7th standard(i was only 12 yrs back then). else i would have asked him to recount what he saw during that period and what were his duties as an Army Officer and why was he following the exodus of people back to India. there is no one of that period left in my family to recount or recollect what happened and if at all my grandfather ever explained what he had seen. also my own father was an Indian Army Officer who was posted most of his service in Jammu and Kashmir(J&K). his stories definitely belong from the late 1970s onwards till current time. by the time my Dad was posted there, it had already become a norm for terrorist infiltrations and constant mini and major skermishes along the border. the experiences of an Indian Army Officer(grandfather and my father) were totally different within 2 or 3 decades.

@P C So, why is Taiwan not recognized as the real China then? Is the US or UK not fully committed in "doing more good than bad" or lets look at the case of the South China Sea
@manoah0075 жыл бұрын
@P C No, China during the early 20th Century went under a revolution. Sun Yat-Sen was very pro-democracy, the only problem was that he died too soon. Also Chairman Mao was the one who radicalized the country heavily crippled by the Japanese Imperialists opening the flood gate of modern day communist China as we know it. The island that Sun Yat Sen and his supporters were sent off to is now present-day Taiwan aka The Republic of China. You're so wrong when you say that Taiwan does not what to be China as still to this day, Taiwan says that its the real China.
@manoah0075 жыл бұрын
@P C We have a recorded civilization history of about 4000 years and Britain and Western Europe thanks to gun powder that too invented by the Chinese only started really ruling the world after the 1500s and that's relatively not too much of a chunk in history relatively. China was a huge leader of empires, the only thing is that it missed out on the industrial revolution. If we look at the ancient Greeks or the Harrapan valley civilization too, a democratic form was already used and empires were already trading way back then, coins from Mohenjodaro (present-day Pakistan) were even found in ancient Rome proving that trade did exist even way back then. Look at India, Britain's then prized possession, its Divide and Rule policy has left scars so deep that it's not even possible to simply put into a paragraph. Also, it was not long until empires realized that trade was better than going on wars. The West has changed the world with its science that is no doubt but saying that the world has become better thanks to the empire of Britain is false at best.

My grandmother used to tell me about the horrors of partition she witnessed as a child. During the Great Calcutta Killings, both Muslims and Hindus died but the number was 10 times in case of Hindus. My grandmother's father got killed barbarically and one of her elder sisters got abducted and later was found dead. My grandmother told us, her mother and another sister and two brothers were in Dhaka at that time which now is in mordern day Bangladesh. She cries often remembering how her healthy mother suffered a major stroke hearing the news and remained paralysed for the rest of her life. All the shops in Calcutta were looted. My grandma said, all their possesions were gone. She says, there were two speakers at the Muslim meeting called at around 4 PM. Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and Khawaja Nazimuddin. Both these leaders made speech that the ‘government will not interfere’. And thus instigated the muslim community can take up law into their own hands. This particular date was selected as Mohammed himself slaughtered on the said day the infidels of Arabia in the Battle of Badr. However, it was certainly better than the Noakhali riots where the entire Hindu population of 50,000 was wiped out. Hindu community was more affected because India was declared a secular country where all religions could live but East Pakistan and West Pakistan was declared an Islamic Country due to which Hindus and Sikhs had to flee from their home into India. The worst fact is, the leaders just to hold their high positions in the government, instigated people which eventually led to the massacre. Neither Jinnah nor Nehru was hurt ofcourse but common men and women and children on both sides had to bear the brunt of the mischief makers who caused the riots. Before anyone says I'm generalising, I'd say I just shared my side of the story what I've heard from my Grandmother and I believe History shouldn't be hidden. And, many muslims were very nice people, her neighbours, they actually helped my grandmother stay safe during the massacre. This only reflects how the innocent always have to suffer at the cost of the influentials. Hope we all can rise above all this and make peace..

Jyotiska Ghosh Yeah. I think a lot of people are distracted from the British intent. They were pretty scared that India would ally with the Soviet Union thus they sandwiched India between two Pakistans. This would insure if India ever allied with the USSR or became an industrial power on their own they couldn’t project their power into the Middle East and Southeast Asia, in which both the United States and Britain had colonies/puppet states, without going through Pakistan. Which considering the civil unrest and bad blood, was practically an impossibility. At least that is my understanding of the situation.

Before British Raj, around 25% global economy was India; after they left, it was 2%. A poor economy parallels regressive and backwards culture. If India hadn’t been under British rule, it would have been one of the largest economies (if not the top) during the latter 20th century. However, albeit gradually, India’s economy is strengthening in areas, but it will take at least a hundred years to be a fully fledged clean, progressive economic top leader.

The Partition of India wasn’t some altruistic move by the British. It wasn’t a move that was done with good intentions that backfired. It was a move that secured Western global influence for decades to come. Especially during the Cold War. The British never wanted a united India during colonial rule, so why do you think they’d want one during independence? The split was perfectly done to make sure India didn’t project power and interfere with the British or the West. Nor be able to better align with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. How can a nation truly live up to its potential if it’s too busy killing one another? The partition of India was one of the greatest failure of South Asia.
